Which one should I get next?

#1

Post by Dep »

Members: Looking for ideas for my next Spyderco. I have a small knife box with six slots and I already have the following:
- Tenacious M4
- Endura 4 (combo saber) VG-10
- Delica 4 (plain saber) VG-10
- Para 3 (digital camo scales with DLC blade) S45VN
- Paramilitary 2 (digital camo scales with satin blade) S45VN

Open to any suggests. Thanks

If you want small - chaparral
If want big - manix 2

Either will give a little more exposure to Spyderco leaf blades than Tenacious.

Stretch 2 K390 or a Manix 2. Gotta try some different steels

Since you have some Golden, Seki and China made spydercos I'd go towards a Taïchung (Taïwan) made Spyderco :open-grin

You seem to have bought mostly work horses that don't necessarily allow much fidgeting. I'd go towards a Gayle Bradley 2, Chaparral or Watu (if you can still find it) !

Otherwise, Native 5 all the way, Native Chief if you want longer. Manix is cool too since it would be a whole new lock for you to discover, and another work horse :)
:respect In the collection :respect : Lots of different steels, in lots of different (and same) Spydercos.

Dragonfly 2. For times when you just want a the smallest knife that is still work ready. Foliage green G10 handles, zome green FRN, or black FRN would look cool with your other knives I think.

Well, looking on what you have already and just going by my personal preferences I´d say you should try:
- Linerless FRN/FRCP
- A "mellow", non aggressive serrated edge in ffg (you only have a short SE part in your CE Endura, and that in sabre grind)
- the caged ball bearing lock

... Unfortunately, there is no Spydie that combines all of this in one single knife, so I have to make several suggestions:

- Manix 2 LW:
+ Linerless FRCP, but very sturdy, great ergos and the also great CBBL.
+ Perfect knife whenever the cutting edge is sufficient in length (it is a bit shorter than the PM2s)
+ The "base" model with BD1N steel is very good already imo, and you can get that one in the cool translucent blue.
No SE version though.

- Native Chief LW SE or Native 5 LW SE (depending if you want a smaller or larger knife)
+ Linerless FRN,
+ ffg serrated edge,
+ and you could try a different platform than Endura or Delica (The Pacific Salt and the Salt 2 are basically linerless versions of Endura and Delica)

- Chaparral SE (not available yet!)
+ To me the best "tiny" knife ever (smaller than a Delica)
+ amazing, supersolid built, but very slim carry,
+ best backlock I personally ever tried
Top three going by pocket-time (update March 24):
- EDC: Endura thin red line ffg combo edge (VG10); Wayne Goddard PE (4V), Endela SE (VG10)
-Mountains/outdoors: Pac.Salt 1 SE (H1), Salt 2 SE (LC200N), and also Wayne Goddard PE (4V)

Sounds like you need a bigger box.

Expensive: ABC — Always Buy Chaparrals. It’s not expensive by today’s standards. About $125.

Cheap: the Astute really surprised me. I carry it a lot.

I second the Dragonfly. It's an amazing little workhorse.

Well, here are some good choices that you won't regret:
Dragonfly 2
Chaparral
Manix 2 Light Weight
Military (1 or 2)

All of these are missing from your collection.

A bit off topic (but perhaps still saying something concerning the op´s question):

I like how well loved the Chap really is around here:
- 11 people replied so far, more than half (6) recommended getting a Chap!
(Second so far goes to some Manix 2 variant (4), third to Dfly (3), if I counted right).

Of course I am aware that the replies here are influenced by what the op already has and biased towards what he could try that is new to him.

(Can´t wait for the Chap SE myself, btw.... :smirk )

Agree ! Seems like a preference towards smaller handled knives . MG2

I would prioritize potential carry time & the model that fills a "hole" in my collection - unless of course you are trying to collect the para/military family or have a desire to customize/upgrade a specific model.

Amazing comments! Several knives mentioned that were not on my radar, so thanks. Someone asked what I like/don't like about my current knives, so here goes . . . I like them all - no issues with any of them:
- Tenacious (M4): This is my "utility knife." I find its "liner lock" easier for one handed closing than my "back locks" and "compression locks." Cuts up boxes like a laser beam.
- Endura 4 and PM2: My usual choices for EDC. I grab the Endura 4 when I walk the dog. I grad the PM2 when I'm out and about.
- Delica 4 and Para 3: These two are my EDC when I go places with blade restrictions.
