I etched a wire clip to get it matte finished instead of chrome polished. Any way to darken it to look like the dark grey/black finish on chaparral clips?

The depths of my memory tells me : heat up clip to very hot(not cherry red) and quench in oil.
Should darken clip.Sorry: I don’t have a spare spring to do a test.
Cherry red would most likely remove spring tension in clip.

I used a map gas torch on a hourglass clip heated it to cherry red then sprayed it with ballistol it ended up nice and dark but not black.
