idea for a deeper concealment clip

#1

Post by Slayer »

I noticed several people in the contest thread indicated an interest in knives with the minimum amount sticking above the pants pocket. I was one of them. A replacement clip might be a viable option. Here is one idea I thought of:

What about a clip that extends from the lanyard hole up to the end of the knife then folds over and continues back down the knife handle like a normal clip? Such a clip would allow the entire knife body to be inside the pocket but still clipped in place like normal. It would look something like this (excuse the ascii art):

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

:::: knife body ::::::::::::::::::::::::

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

That kind of clip design is the reason I have considered to buy EDI genesis. Ultra low ride clip, slim lock back with micarta handles and spydie hole - I wouldn't consider I'd buy.

I like the idea, but keep in mind...how are you going to tighten the screws? There will have to be holes cut into the clip to access them, which doesn't leave much material left. The clip in this area will need to be larger to allow for this.

I think the best way to attach the clip would be a single screw coming into the lanyard hole from the non-clip side. The clip itself would have a threaded collar that goes into the lanyard hole. That way no hole is required for the clip and it is still reversable for left/right carry.

Ok, I was thinking of the 3 screw type of clips. You were thinking of the 98 version of clips....Now I follow your idea

I made a picture which I cant post here, go to BFC SPyderco forum & see there.

BTW, I cant include my signature here either...??? Keep getting error's

I didn't realise that EDI already uses such a clip on their knives. I thought I had an original idea. Maybe next time. I might attempt to make one for myself, but don't want anyone to get into legal or ethical trouble over the idea. If there truly are no issues with the idea, I'd love to have one.

(edited: per the bladeforums.com discussion of this concept, EDI has no patent on the clip design. There is a good sketch of the idea there.)
