Seems like that’s not the only gem hiding at Cutlery Shoppe. They have Super Blue Delicas and Enduras.

This seems like the perfect place to point this out. Notice the laser engraved Spyder is different color on yellow salt. I wonder if it’s because of magnacut or a different process. The other manix are s110v,rex45,bd1,and 15v. I didn’t want to make a thread if I’m just stating a dumb observation. Image

My yellow H2 blades are like that also. Edit, and my Salt N5 as well.

It seems the highly corrosion resistant steels will not take as dark of a laser etch.

I first noticed this years ago on my first N5 Salt (LC200n). It seems H1, H2 and MC act similarly.

ETA: afterthought... It's odd that s110v takes such a dark laser etch considering it's corrosion resistance. :thinking

Yikes!

The blade tang seems to protrude extra tall and the lock bar looks funky too.

I don't think it's dumb.

Nice collecting, by the way. Same knife in different steels. I like your thinking. :)

Definitely not a dumb observation! I’ve noticed the same thing with Magnacut as well and have even noticed how the bug laser engravings can have different finishes on other steels too. For example on the Damasteel Urban, the bug can almost entirely disappear depending on what angle light is hitting the blade. Or how the bug looks different on DLC vs the FDE PVD coating on the REC exclusives.

I’ve also noticed the laser engravings look different on LC200N knives made in Japan compared to the LC200n knives made in Golden. The bug on the LC200N Native 5 Salt has very similar engravings to the Magnacut Native 5 Salt. So maybe that is evidence to a different type of laser engraver being used during Golden manufacturing, which is affecting the finish appearance.

They’re all being laser engraved but maybe they’re using different types of laser engravers? Definitely interesting though and I’d love to know more about the differences myself.

This thread is so underrated and I think it’s great for this reason too. Sometimes quick questions or thoughts don’t necessarily need their own dedicated thread or sometimes threads get derailed and this is the perfect place to have or continue those “off-topic-Spyderco” conversations.

Thanks guys. Love the feed back. I noticed in pictures the magnacut letters almost disappear at certain angles as well. Kind of a cool conversation to have. Ive looked at so many different Spyderco knives I can appreciate the subtle differences that make each knife unique. One more reason I love Spyderco.

The Spyder on the Native 5 Salt is in the regular black unlike the silver/white of most other Magnacut blades. As I will be naming one of my upcoming PM2 knives Kraken, I will need to ask BladeHQ if their laser service will match the Spyder. Glad this issue came up.

I think I saw Eric comment on this in one of the recent YouTube videos, maybe Blade Show? I'm talking out of my *** a bit here, but I'm pretty sure he mentioned that they use a slightly-different process on the salts because it's less prone to causing corrosion. They've had some trouble in the past with the regular process predisposing the steel to corrosion by making little tiny pockets, or something like that.

Interesting that kriezek's Native 5 Magnacut looks "normal," though - maybe I am mistaken.
I'm happiest with Micarta and Tool Steel.

Top four in rotation: K390 + GCM PM2, ZCarta Shaman, Crucarta PM2, K390 + GCM Straight Spine Stretch.

My low tech way of measuring this is to carefully push an edge straight into a bar of soap, then take a picture of the V notch, zoom in and measure it against a protractor.

Now THAT is clever. Well done Vivi.

Ever had a chance to compare your soap goniometer to a real one?
Maybe we need another short “test run” of the Spyderco Edge Angle Guide? :cheap-sunglasses

There are still some of these floating around in collections and they pop up on the secondary market from time to time, but there isn’t enough to go around!

I guess it has to do with the level of corrosion resistance of those steels?

Just read an email from Knifecenter reminding everyone about the inevitable. :(

We all knew it was coming… and it’s going to be here very soon. Spyderco Prices will increase in 2024

i've been thinking about this. seki knives got no increase this year. i'm wondering if they get a bigger increase this year than normal. costs have been really getting out of hand the last couple of years. i've been complaining about spyderco pricing themselves out of the good value range for years, and i still think that's a valid concern on the horizon, but now they are competing with much higher costs of everything across the board (which i understand affects them as well and causes them to increase prices even more). i bought my first home this year (i know it's a terrible time to buy, but you can't control when you need a house) and it's been tough. i've had to back off my purchasing so much. hopefully spyderco hasn't been hit too hard and doesn't need to drive up prices an exorbitant amount.

Happy almost New Year! Put in the last few orders this year before the price hike. It was definitely the year of K390 for me. Bought most of the discontinued models and just put in an order at SFO for a Lil Temp and Ladybug in the magic steel. Also snagged what looks to be the last SE Wharnie Endela (VG-10) at NationalKnives for a pretty sweet deal. Can I finally stick to a New Year’s resolution for no more new knives?! I’ve yet to do it in 10 years.

Back to K390 goodness, I picked up one of those SE Police for cheap with the intent to get G10 scales from Dmytro on Etsy. He’s in Ukraine so it takes a little while to reach the south eastern US peninsula. They arrived yesterday after almost six weeks and were put to work immediately. Solid as can be, this thing’s awesome!

Good on ya. It seems that 2023 treated you well. That's a nice Police... I'm rockin' the stock version today. It wasn't my original intention, but K390 is the best represented steel in my pile o' knives.

I have been looking at that SE Wharnie Endela (VG-10) at NationalKnives since the discontinued list came out. And again just yesterday. Great price and I'm glad i can stop looking at it.
