I don't see a lot of Benchmade bashing here at all. Many of us also own Benchmade knives and recognize them as a well-made, high-quality knife. Keep in mind that Benchmade licensed the Spyderco hole for their knives for many years, so there certainly appears have been cooperation and mutual respect between the companies. Most of us have preferences and tastes regarding knives, but I don't think that any of us want to put down another American knife company that has original quality products. Now if you want to talk about companies that blatently copy Spyderco designs, that is another story.

Hi Phalanx7.62, welcome to the Forum.

I don't think there is much animosity towards Benchmade over here.
I do think all the people here think that Benchmade is a company that makes great knives. But we all like Spydies much more for various reasons.

IMO Benchmade and Spyderco are both in the top of production knifecompanies, but they are so different that you can't compare them at all.

One of my next purchases will probably be a (sheeple friendly) Benchmade, because I want to expand my horizone and to experience the AXIS-lock. I know I'll buy Spydies forever and Benchmades occasionaly.

Likewise, I was not aware of any BM bashing occuring on this forum. Do you have any examples of where it has? I think that people that like high quality knives appreciate that regardless of manufacturer, and so it is not surprising that people who own Spydies also have BMs. They may discuss the merits and failings of each make but i don't think this has ever descended to hostility to the brand.

Edited for clarity.

It is usually common courtesy not to make your first post on a Forum one which criticizes the whole Forum.

A critical first post from someone who doesn't even show their location is often the signature of a troll. If this was not your intent then you have my apology.

However, if you were a long time member of this Forum and were more fully aware of the content of the posts on this Forum over the years, I'm sure you would see that your statement that there is "widespread animosity towards Benchmade on this forum" is incorrect - very incorrect.

Members here are fans of Spyderco, but there is little negative comment about any other brand, particularly Benchmade. Sal Glesser himself has posted here stating his respect for Benchmade.

If you're a Spyderco Fan, welcome. Please don't try to stir up inter-brand or inter-forum controversy.

David

Hi Robb.
I've been browsing this forum for a few weeks now, but never posted. I have never seen any bashing of any other knife brand.

Personally I love spydies and other high quality knives. My collection does, for the vast majority, consist of spydies, but I have a few BMs too and some Cold Steels.

I've found the forum to be very informative and a friendly place to lurk and get some information.

I was reading a lot over at the Spyerco forums the other day. Seems they have a bone to pick with BM's. As most of you prolly post over there too, ever notice this? I thought it was really weird. People get SOO proud over what they own, they begin bashing all others. I post here, at BF, and now at Spydie. I don't get why people get all worked up about another brand...

Just a thought.

Robb

I copied this from your post on the BM site, it would appear you are trying to stir up conflict - why post this on that site when you can't come back with evidence on this site to support your allegation?

Welcome to the Forum!!!
Well this is the Spyderco Forum last I checked and generally we like them better...or else we would not post here. As per animosity towards BM, is that what you are trying to cause by this thread? If I am wrong my apologies. Take Care!!!

Phalanx7.62,

1) I'm a newbie here, just take a look at my post count.
2) I have been lurking for the past 6 months, and have not seen the "windespread animosity towards Benchmade".
3) I have enough respect for someone's "home" (ie. this Spyderco Forum) not to stir up trouble. Again, I will follow the wise sentiment of 4 s ter and CKE of an apology if this is not your intention.
4) Could you tell us more about yourself? I am curious as to what type of person you are before I can conceive the intent of your post.

You can't have everything. And if you do, you're missing something.

Sorry about coming across rather bluntly. No excuse, but sometimes it is hard to accurately convey feelings in text format. I never meant to stir up any controversy. I was merely stating what I interpreted. I understand the idea of brand loyalty, but I myself am not incredibly loyal to one brand. I love Spydies as much as BM's.

I was merely asking because of the general feeling I got from some posts I read.

Again, sorry if I ruffled any feathers.

Robb

Here's some of what I found:
Posted 1-18-04:
I have carried Almar SERE 2K, Emerson Karambit, MOD MKII, couple of Benchmades(before I knew better), George Tichbourne Wood Century, well...

It was my mistake letting a couple of posts taint my view of an entire forum. My bad.

Robb>Touche...I see that was my post. I can't even say you took it out of perspective. I must say though don't take my post as a general feeling for this forum. Seeing as it was my post I will elaborate.
I personally don't like BM. I don't like some of the stuff they have tried to pull in the last little while(read as the opening hole debate)and generally dont care for any of their new products. I have an 875 Sentinel(that is very well used), a 750 Pinnacle and a 940 Osbourne. I bought the Pinnacle because they were a frame lock and I do not like Sebenza's. I bought the 940 to try the axis lock but I like the Spydie ball lock better. My intent was not to cause animosity towards BM...I just don't like them. I think you would be hard pressed not to find a little slip here and there on either forum. I was making a joke...har, har...but I will still stand behind the fact I do not like BM and will never buy BM. That is why I am here and not there. Don't take my opinion as everyones here.
You probably did ruffle some feathers but when you get a new poster that appears to be trying to start something we(I) will defend this forum dearly. I hope I did not offend you because we need all the support we can get and new people are good. I hope you continue to post here as it is the best forum I think anyways. Take Care!!!

Thanks. I respect your opinion very much. That's what makes forums great. I will continue to post and read here, as it seems like a great place to learn from other 8-legged-knife-freaks.

I also realize the sensitivity around the hole opener debate. Tough call there. I have a Benchmade Eclipse hole opener from 97? and love the hole opener.

Peace

Cool we agree to disagree...I think? Last thing I want to do is offend anyone. Glad you are still going to post. Take Care and enjoy the forum!!!

Welcome to the Forum Dskmanch and Phalanx 7.62 (nice calliber, BTW)
Most of us here agree that BM makes some fine knives. Most of us here have other knives than Spydies and enjoy them (for instance, I have a Kershaw, a CRKT and a Delta Z). Even the Spyderco employees carry non Spyderco knives!

Aloha and welcome! Hopefully things are in the clear now. I have a BM Tsunami, Stryker,Weehawk Bali, Monarch Skinner, and Eclipse...the only one of those I use is the Eclipse and I mess w/ my Bali once in a GREAT while.
The great thing about this forum is that we can honestly express ourselves...we don't "bash" others because this is a Spyderco Forum. There is a great "Ohana" feeling here, which keeps me coming back.

God will put you over...if you let Him! Mark 11:23!
