hello people im about to purchase my first spyderco in about 14 years. ihave owned two all stainless medium sizes a mariner and something else i cant remember.i was wondering wich small size knife is a better choice .meerkat, salsa, cricket. this will be an edc for me to use as im tired of my benchmade bluestar.i do not use a knife for much more than mail and the cutting of food so i just need a little knife and dont want to spend 100 + like on my benchmade for which i hardly use, although it is a fine knife im thinking of trading it away as soon as i get a small new peice to carry.im drawn to those little spyderco beauties but havent had the chance to hold any of them yet.thanks for any suggestions.

Personally,I'd get an FRN Delica or SS Dragonfly. But of the 3 you list,I'd go w/the Meerkat. It's small enough not to scare sheeple, but can still do some fairly serious cutting. The wire clip rides low in the pocket so you won't lose it,the S-blade version is great for opening envelopes and packages, and the Phantom lock is good for messing w/people. It's like a knife and puzzle in one.

Cricket or Salsa out of your list. Wait for the Navigator 2 rather than get the Meercat.

I would like to proffer the Calypso Jr for your consideration. It is, as a cutter, a star amongst stars.

For what you said you want to do, FRN Plain Edge Delica ...

Get the Delica, then ... get the Meercat or the Cricket too. :-) It is very hard to beat a Delica for an all around knife. (size, weight, shape, etc)

When is the Navigator 2 coming out? Specs? Blade size? Handle material? Weight? Kind of lock?

Thank!

Welcome to the Forum little big man,

I've got the Calypso Jr. and it will slice mail open, flake garlic plus cleave meat and small bones just fine. It's nearly 3&quot; so it is long enough to be useful and short enough to slip into your pocket. The VG-10 flat ground blade is an extra in the use context you outlined. I got it for just under $40.

If you want smaller and budget, the Spyderco LadyBug retails for under $20 in some places. Blade is 2&quot;. The steel offered varies from place to place.

Just offering alternatives. Good Luck.

Hi little big man!

I'll go along with a Delica or Calypso Jr. -- plenty of blade length &amp; handle to easier facilitate food preparation.

The s-curve blades (normally a low, trailing point) may cut or poke when/where you don't want to. Also, the versions you mention are slightly smaller, and may prove more difficult to adapt to your posted requirements.

of the 3 you listed, I'd say a plain edge salsa. The hood and lock may take some getting used to, it it has lots of grip.

otherwise I'd suggest either a calypso jr or dragonfly. I've been using my stainless dragonfly since aug 20, 01 &amp; it's been 24/7 neck carry since jan 03. Calypso jr I got on oct 26th 01, used that one until I sent it as a topper on a trade about 3 weeks ago. Have a grey in my toolbox/safe. Have a serrated black coming up here now. Can you tell I like the calypso jr?

I've abused the hell out of my 'fly, including screwdriver and prybar use, not to mention using the handle as a light hammer... 2yrs+ and still rock solid. Only 63usd factory, can't go wrong with it. Cheap enough to use hard and replace when I finally manage to kill it.

From what you say I would recommend either a meerkat or, a Navigator II (when they arrive) or for an all great buy go with a Delica.

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.
The Delica makes for a great beater knife. However, if you are looking for a smaller knife (not that the Delica is big), than I'd suggest the Dragonfly or the Cricket. The Meerkat is cute and its Phantom lock™ is really funny to operate, but you may find it a bit too bulky.

Another vote for the Calypso Jr., and of the three you mention for your needs the Salsa is the best I think.
BTW welcome to the <img src="spyder.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0> Forum.
