Does anyone have any idea when the collectors knives will be shipped. The Gunting has been retailing for quite a few months now.
Gail posted last week (see "April classes at SFO, who's going" post) that Gunting collector's sets would be shipping this week.

Gail & I are supposed to visit Michael Yates (Zen), Spyderco's distributor in Australia. Maybe a good time?

Sal,
Could you let me know when you're coming to Australia. I would very much like the opportunity to meet you and Gail, and show you both some Aussie hospitality <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>. Not to mention the chance to play with some prototypes <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.
However, judging by the number of us on the forums, I'm not sure how many starters you'd get for an MBC seminar. The other problem is the restrictive knife carry laws in several states (here it's "no knives in a public place without a lawful excuse"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>. Also, for a number of historical and social reasons, carrying a "weapon" is not common in Australia.
Take care,
Clay

Jeff said to say that it was "his fault" that the collector pieces didn't go out when they should have.
Clay. Certainly we will get together when I'm there.
I'd like to know more about the laws there. Can you carry a small Swiss army knife without a problem?
What size restrictions, if any, exist?
What is considered a "proper excuse"?
thanx,

Sal,
Here's a link with some more details. http://www.police.nsw.gov.au/campaigns/psa.cfm.
Basically you are not permitted to carry <b>any </b> knife in a public place or a school without a lawful excuse. Note that self-defence is not included in the list of lawful excuses. In practice it is up to the police and ultimately the courts to determine whether an excuse is lawful or not. I have heard of SAKs being confiscated as well as multi-tools. However the law is being used to target street gangs and kids in known trouble spots and I have to say I pay little regard to it. I think my age and appearance make it unlikely that I will ever be questioned about the contents of my pockets and, if I was, I believe my job gives me a reasonable excuse for the knives I carry. Although the police can use metal detectors in designated trouble spots, you will not find yourself being screened entering public buildings or entertainment venues. Let me know if I can help further.
Looking forward to seeing you down here.
Take care,
Clay
