What fixed blades do you use??? [Archive]

I know we have the Moran's, and should have the upcoming Lum tanto, but I was interested in what other fixed blades Spyderco users swear by. I have never held a Moran, never even had a chance to see one to tell you the truth, so I can't add any comments on this.

I have used many over the short time I have been around with less than desireable results. I have tried Buck, CRKT, Kabar, TOPS, and Cold Steel. The only one that I still own and would consider carrying is the Kabar USMC model.

I recently acquired a CRK Project 1 and am quite pleased. I can't wait to go play with it, but have to finish the semester first due to time constraints. I absolutely love these one piece knives. I have a Busse that I hate to say doesn't even compare in terms of comfort and feel.

Anyway, I'm interested in what other Spydie nuts swear by for a fixed blade and if you could add a couple user comments about the Moran I would be pleased as well<img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

I guess many of us are extremely excited at the prospect of the Lum Tanto, Darndo and the Perrin Bowie.
The Spyderco Moran Drop Point is my favourite carry in my forays into the jungles of Malaysia. Its very sharp, easy to maintain, has excellent ergonomics and a great camp companion. I've used this blade to field dress fish and game. It has excellent edge retention qualities and can be sharpened easily with the sharpmaker model 204. The humid conditions in our jungles are excellent testing grounds for corrosion resistance. The Moran drop point showed no signs of rust and staining. What I find most useful, is the concealex sheath and teklock. This feature heightens the value for money factor because we have to pay four times as much. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> I can look forward to the Perrin Bowie because its an Awesome piece <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>

I use the Camillus Talonite Talon. It is a practical size (for my uses) and the blade is made of a corrosion resistant material.

I also have a CRK Kathathu and a CS Black Bear Classic but they are just for show and have never been used.

Although I'm a big Spyderco fan, I've never had the opportunity to handle a Moran. Probably would have bought one by now if the dealer had one on his shelf.

Question for samo: What kind of fish and game do you catch/take in the jungle? Give us more details of your exploits--I'm sure there are many others here that are similarly interested about life in Malaysia.

hey, tique,
don't really use it much anymore, but the last fixed-blade I carried regularly was my Gerber mark I... on long motorcycle trips I could grab it with either gloved hand, and carried small-of-back it was easy to forget it was even there.

I use/carry a Marbles Fieldcraft and sometimes a Puma Hunter's Pal fixed blade knife when I'm hiking/backpacking, etc.

Neither are fancy but both work very well, especially the Marbles, for the tasks I need done. Or as we say in Texas, both are slicker 'n hog guts on a Ritz cracker.

I have been carrying a Gryphon M-10 most recently.Designed by Bob Terzuola.A great size for small carry fixed,but have been discontinued for awhile.The Moran is just as solid and more belly for skinning.It goes hunting everytime and is great in the kitchen,but the best aspect of the Moran is the lightweight.
If you're looking for a bigger blade a Gryphon M30A1 is very good,or possibly a Camillus CQB1,or Szabo bowie.All are high quality,but not as cost effective as the Moran.

My favourite fixed blades are my Spyderco Santoku and Paring knife. My wife loves them too, as I've been spending much more time in the kitchen since I bought them. Onions just fall into the thinnest possible slices as soon as they see the Santoku approaching <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>.

My best fixed blade that I own is my 4" Suko Skinning knife. It is basically like a Moran for shape, but the tip has more of a curve to it. Kraton handle...

I was able to handle a Moran today, and it's a beauty... nice and light, perfect size...

The fixed blade that I carry is a Wegner/Simonich Talonite Pro Hunter, the fixed blade version of the knife that became the Spyder Wegner. As good as it gets.

The A.G. Russell Deerhunter is the <$75, lightweight fixed blade I use the most. Its cutting performance is outstanding, the sheath is well-designed, etc. The Rinaldi TTKK, at ~$150, is my fave of the more expensive knives in this class, my perfect lightweight camp knife. I also use a Kellam lynx puukko, at <$30.

All the above knives are more or less in the same class as the Moran: relatively small knives designed for maximum cutting effiency, good ergonomics, carryability, etc.

Beyond that, the other fixed blades I use are Ontario 12" and 18" machetes.

I have little use for the robust military-influenced fixed blades in the ~6" size range, although I know this niche is a fave of many. I am thinking about a large -- ~9" -- camp chopper.

Like TEXinEX, I love the Puma Hunter's Pal.
I purchased it 35 years ago for whitetail deer hunting chores in New York State, but found the size quite suitable for mulies when I lived in Montana.

I have several Spydies and am thrilled with each one depending on task, but as a pure hunter, the Puma wins on that task.

One way or the other, you pay for your tools!

I have owned quite a few custom fixed a lot of names, but I have sold or traded them all, for cold steel fixed blades srk, trailmaster, master hunter, kobun.
I think commercial knives are better FOR ME than customs. these days with the high grade commercial steel availible and quality machining.
only spyderco folders and cold steel fixed are for me.

I dont own that many fixed blades and to be honest dont know which brands are quality and which are junk, the 1st blades I trusted where the Gerbers, they are extremely strong and do their job superbly, secondly the other blades would be my Spydercos which I now only buy, they just got a better sharper edge and the Gerbers I have cant offer the cut that the spyderedges do.

But yeah, I got a Gerber Mark II which is a gr8 blade, dissapointed they stopped production of it and the BMF, but we cant have everything huh?

I use a cold-steel SRK. Great combination of heft and balance. Just the right size for outdoor foraging.
