View Full Version : Civilian: G-10 vs. carbon fiber

After reading Hannibal (no, I didn't see the movie), I was curious about the Harpy. So, I did a quick search of the Net and found this mecca of knife connoiseurs. I fell in love with Spyderco, of course, and I'm now ready to join your weird little (or not-so-little) cult.

Anyway, I live in "the hood", and I frequently carry valuable stuff to and from the post office (I sell gold nuggets, coins, and the like.) I'm not a fan of handguns, so in addition to some kick-ass pepper spray, I've decided on the Civilian for personal protection (should it ever get serious and I can't outrun 'em.)

Finally my question: what are the pros and cons of G-10 versus the carbon fiber handle? Thanks for your help!

As far as I know, you would probably be better off with the G-10 Civilian for carry purposes. If the Carbon Fiber has the normal texture to it, the G-10 will have a lot better grip to it. G-10 is also the cheaper and easier to find model.

If you are seriously thinking about self-defense oriented carry, you might want to look into something like the Gunting, and then try to catch a class or two on it, or at the very lest, get the video's for it.

I haven't had a clove in a long time. I just have a hard time finding any for sale down here.

Thanks tique and sal. I'm gonna go with the G-10 (though that doesn't preclude my buying the carbon fiber later on for my collection. Collection? Guess I'm getting hooked...)

I personally like the grip of the CF Civilian better than the G10 version. It may not be as durable as the G10 but grip-wise I find it more comfortable. For everday carry it is dressier than the G10 and easier on the your pocket or waistband depending on where you clip it. At around $160 - $170 (street price) it is not much higher in cost than the G10. The only problem is the availability of the CF version. I think that it is a misconception that the CF Civilian is for collection purposes only. You may also want to check out the Matriarch.

Mine is CF and I have no problem getting a secure grip on it. Considering that in use, it would involve a "pulling" rather than a thrusting motion, the grip appears very well designed.

I havent had the plesure of holding a CF Civie but if it makes it ligher Id be all for it, I do like the heavier blades but Im so used to my Matriarch that the Civie seems cumbersome.
Its to bad the rest of u in the US cant get Matriarch's, they godly blades.
