View Full Version : How is this possible?
I just received two new Spydies including the Calypso Jr. which I had not seen in real life before and looking at it, you just got to wonder: How is it possible, that Spyderco can make such a beautiful knife and sell it this cheap (got it for $40)?....not that I really would want to know as long as they keep on doing it . Quite frankly, I think it is a much more beautiful knife than the Delica and also has better ergos. Didn't realize that the blade was also a little bit thicker (full 3 mm).
As I have scruples owning more than a handful of knives at the same time, just can't bare the thought having them collect dust in drawer (kitchen knives excluded of course...you can never have enough kitchen knives ), this one is going to my father. I am really happy for him, what a beautiful piece.
I also see now why it is such a good slicer, the edge grid is tiny, meaning that the bevel of the full flat grid is almost to zero edge.
Edited as usual for spelling.

I just scored a SS SE Calypso Jr. on e-Bay for 25 bucks. Don't know what I'm gonna do with it, but I have one NIB so this one will likely get customized some how.

Congrats on the haul dude! The Calypso is an all-time winner!

Ah, the little Calypso... one of my very favorites. Not sure if it's better than my "Dialica", but close, anyway.
Congratulations and enjoy your new knife. Did you know there is a G-10 version too? Unfortunatley, it's just a slipjoint

Hob, I agree that the Calypso Jr. is one of the real bargains of the Spyderco world. The grey FRN, fish scale texturing, and bead blasted clip combine, IMHO, to create a look that is head and shoulders above all the other FRN models. And, as you already noticed, the flat grind and thin edge make it an excellent slicer and peeler. At the risk of cheating your dad out of a nice gift, they work great in the kitchen.

Aloha!
Yup, had the Micarta version, which my father now owns. Used the SS version, but now it's in my collection. Got the black FRN version from a fellow 'Mite here. I need to get the Grey one...
Anyway, it has always been one of my faves, but like Dialex, I'm enamoured by my Delica which is why I don't rotate any Calypso Jr.'s in my EDC bunch. Besides, my PE Dragonfly can pretty much do what my Calypso's do anyway by nature of blade shape!
Great choice, I know your father will be happy, mine sure is!
God will put you over...if you let Him! John 14: 13,14...try it, it WORKS!
Actually, the other Spydie in that order was a Dragonfly which goes to my girlfriend. But the Dragonfly I was already familiar with, so I knew what to expect. Mmh, 'fly, Calypso, Lil'T....I see a trend of leaf shaped blades and full flat grinds .
I tried to be careful to say "more beautiful" since beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder. "Better" would imply a quality difference and I don't think that there is one between the Delica and the Calypso. I am curious about the "Dialica" though .
Oh, ya ... I was very much tempted to keep it, but hey, the joy of a loved one is your own as well, right?
