Friend asked me to sharpen his old knife. I am using a spyderco kit. It has taken me hours to get a decent edge. Is there another sharpening stone I can use, such as diamond? Is it available and how much. Thanks

Welcome to the forum Condue. You can get diamond stones for your sharpmaker. they're about $60 a set

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.
The regular procedure is gray corners, gray flats, white corners, white flats. However, if the knife is really dull, rebevelling it takes time with the 204. A grinder is more appropriate.

wouldn't it also matter what kind of steel he is sharpening?

If the knife has a proper edge geometry, difference in steel may make a difference of 20 to 30 strokes on the gray, but not more.
I bet the edge geometry has to be reset. Either the diamond rods for the sharpmaker, or you can lean a diamond stone against the rods.
