Hi everyone. I'm leaving Friday morning for a white water rafting trip. It will be my first time.

I'd like to carry one of my beloved Spydies with me while on the water (IWB, probably tied as well). I'm told we will get thrown off the small raft.

I'd carry my Harpy but don't know how well it would fare when I'm falling through some rapids in just a bathing suit. Is a beater a better idea? I have a PE Native 3 for that, or I could carry a SE Calypso JR (lightweight, cheap but still serrated). I'm not even sure a SE would be needed though.

It's between these 3 knives, just not so sure I want to abuse the Harpy (which I use for "regular" boating). Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

I'd take the Calypso simply because it's cheaper to replace .... just in case. Not sure where you're going ..., but "stuff" can happen on the river that is beyond your oontrol.

The way I used to carry knives on white water trips was to run a small piece of rope snugly around my waist using a true square knot with the knife suspended by the lanyard hole.

Of course, another option would be to go out and buy a Spyderco SPOT neck knife ... with the break-away chain.

Take a Spyderco Rescue or Assist. They are what you need in a river. A blunt tip so you don't hurt yourself or others, and not pop the raft. It will cut rope and PFD straps, and cheese at lunch.
Nothing is still in a river, everything is hard to control.

I agree with both opinions but would say that ideally I'd have a sheepsfoot. Shoot. I'll probably end up with the Calypso though. Thanks guys.

The SE Calypso jr. is a great choice. Not only it's cheaper, but it's reliable <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>
OTOH, you could consider getting yourself a Snap-It or a Remote Release (if you can find them), or maybe a Rescue or even better, an Assist.
Speaking for my part, I'd rather take a Millie. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle border=0>

What I have done in the past is run a short piece of cord though that lanyard hole in my rescue and tied it (using a double fisherman’s knot) to form a short loop. Then clipped a mini karabiner into this. The karabiner clips to my PDF, pack, or climbing harness depending on what I'm doing at the time. The karabiner will unclip easy if the knife is needed, but stops me losing the knife - well it has thus far :-)

Take car on the water, and have fun.

Well I just got back and had a blast. I tied the Calypso to my shorts drawstring. Worked very well. However, I now have some very minor surface rust appearing in the groove of each serration. I never expected this to happen, but will make it new again.
