I have about 5-60 bux saved towards a new one, and was wondering if I should go with a delica, or endura, or save up for a mili? I am lookin for a bigger blade, as I would like for my edc to double as a self protection knife if need be. I love me salsa, but I think I am ready for an upgrade.

The Mili is great but if you want one now and one that will disappear soon get the PE grey Goddard.I just pick up one on Ebay for 39.99

is the blade significantly larger than my salsa? I like the PE one

It is larger, but not that broad. Overall, it has a slim profile.

that's kind of what I am going for, it's funny when I pull out my salsa, people are like  why's the blade so....fat? :(

Indeed, it's like a small shovel. ;) I heard the Salsa II will be slimmer. :) And with G-10 handles. And in S30V. And... somebody stop me! :P

Actually, aluminum. I don't know what blade steel is planned.

so would the goddard be a good choice for a new, slightly bigger, edc? also, should I go partially serrated, or PE or what would you guys recommend? I really want a manix or a mili, but...no monies.

Knives and edges are very much personal preference. That said I would go CE (partly serrated), as it gives you more options.

I find that I use the plain edge at the front of the blade a lot for small cutting jobs, and the serrated part for heavy cutting.

If you're into spyderco at any degree of madness, you're going to buy either a delica or a endura in a near future (possibly both!). I'd suggest the endura. Quite different from the salsa, good size, great knife in the price range you mentionned.

You knoe you need it!

so should I go with an endura, delica, goddard, or save a little longer for a mili? I think I am going to go with plain edge again, I would like a CE but it seems like it would be more difficult to maintain for a newb like myself.

Aloha Ero2!

I'd go with a CE Endura. IMHO, I'd rather have the SE and NOT need it than to NEED it and NOT have it! Delica for a more "Sheeple" friendly knife...CE is not THAT hard to maintain, so I agree with RAT54 about the "option thing". (Howzit Ian!) Also, having a small portion of SE will help you "graduate" to FULL SE sharpening! ;)

I have a CE Milli that I got from my bro in CA. I don't really carry that one as much as when I first got it for 2 reasons: One, It is a bit large for IWB carry. You know that saying,"Is that a ...in your waistband or are ya just happy to see me?" LOL! Two: I been experimenting with my Pacific from my older brother in NY...Now, I can carry an Endura comfortably IWB as it is slimmer than my Mili. The Delica is no problem at all. Also, all these :spyder: 's ya mentioned are quite adequate for SD, God forbid, should you find yourself in a situation!

For what it's worth, your Salsa is a dandy MBC player too, even though it's not rated. It opens well under (simulated) stress and the grip is very secure, Lock-up on both my aluminum en Ti models is very reliable. Edgewise, it's a perfect little Let-Go-Device, which is what you should be looking for in a defensive folder anyway IMHO.

FRN Calypso or Goddard are great blades and quite cheap...

think I have decided on the grey goddard with a CE blade, since I have a PE salsa, sound like a good choice?

Aloha Ero2!

Ahhhhh, a MOST excellent choice! You will not be disappointed with the Goddard FRN. I had the opportunity to MBC a friend's one a few years back...it performed very well, and that bit of a guard on the handle makes a BIG difference!

Good one my friend!

from the dimensions it sounds like this sucker is a lot bigger than my salsa, no? is it too big for an EDC? as I won't get to check it out before ordering it. I also think I figured out something about sharpening (or messed up my salsa royally  ) , rubbing my thumb across the blade isn't necessarily a test of sharpness, right now it doesn't feel sharp, just got done sharpening it, and it filets paper beautifully. Am I doing something wrong here?

Is it too big for EDC?
Depends on if you like big knives or not.I carried mine to work tonight and coulf not even feel it in my pocket. It is slimer than the Salsa.
I like larger EDCs myself.Military,Starmate,Endura,Goddard, the Native is about as small as I like to EDC.

Aloha Ero2,
Yep, it is bigger than the Salsa...and I agree with JSmith as it all depends on the "carrier"...this being you of course! LOL! I don't think it too big for EDC...

As for your "thumb rub" on the edge, I think it's because of a burr, OR it's angled a bit different on one side...does it feel sharp when ya rub it one way, then "dull" when ya rub it the other?
