View Full Version : Serrated Or Not?
It's been a bit since we've kicked this issue around, so I figured I'd post it and let it run....
Which do ya like, CE (Combo-Edge), SE (Serrated Edge), or PE (Plain Edge)?
In the past, I was a die-hard CE fan, and scarcely owned a Spydie without this type of edge. I like the wicked cutting ability that the serrations offer. There just doesn't seem to be anything they won't cut. In addition, the serrations seem to hold their edge (or cutting ability) for a longer time.
Of late, though, I've been giving the Plain Edge more thought. I guess it's probably mainly because the PE is easier to sharpen. Plus, there are some mediums that the serrations seem to bind up on, whereas the Plan Edge won't.
Thoughts?

Aloha Jim!
We appear to be on the same page as of late buddy! LOL! I been toting around SEVERAL PE's lately...This VG10 is great "stuff"...
On the street however, I either go CE or SE. Like, I carry a Native SE or my BM 555 CE...I have a SE Endura in my fanny bag for "just in case" situations. My CE Ladybug is ALWAYS there...
In the end though, I prefer CE for versatility...
God bless ya! ;)

I suppose I'm at the other end of the spectrum from you guys!
I've been a plain-edge all the way type of guy all my life, but with the job I currently have, I have to cut open a whole lot of shipping boxes every week and a SE Mili or Delica become more and more tempting.
Except from kitchen knives, I can't even remember buying a SE knife in my life. I suppose it's because I didn't have anything to sharpen them but I've been using the 204 with skill for a while now.....that just means never say never

And I should add that for some reason, a combo-edge just doesn't do it for me. I'd rather carry one of each instead of only one that does half the job. Just my opinion...

Aloha Jimmy Dean!
Hey...that's a GREAT reason to buy TWO :spyder:'s!!!
What was I thinking all this time!? LOL!
God bless!
My preference is for PE.
However I do own an older integral clip Endura that is a CE and I can't complain about that knife. I'll get one of the newer ones in CE too.

My line of work I love the SE. I can shred seatbelts and rope with it

The best of both worlds is right out in plain view. Yes the old big DYAD has all the bases covered. There are times when you do indeed need one of each type of blade and there is your answer. I have been buying them on Ebay and at knife shows whenever I can get ahold of them. I really wish they would bring back the DYAD in S30V. That settles it. :) :spyder: :D

PE is less scarier for unarmed civilians... :D

I've tried to like just plain edge but I always find my self buying and using SE,
The exception is on my LUM TANTO, It looks so classic in plain.

Hey all,
SE for me hands down for utility knife use, which is what I use my Spydercos exclusively for. A SE cuts more efficiantly and cuts longer between touch ups than any PE IMHO. Scientific evidence supports this. I've had people say to me, well I use a PE for whittling, I say use a slipjoint whittler for whittling. Use a SE for heavy cutting jobs!!!
How bout them Red Sox!

Plain edge looks better? Okay, this is a matter of taste. But I think the type of serrations Spyderco uses is also esthetically pleasing! All my Spyderco's (so far) have a fully serrated edge (Military, Para-Military, Dodo, Meerkat).

I think it depends on the knife. My very EDC is a SE Delica, but I can think of some knives where serrations won't appeal much, at least to me (for instance, the Chinese folder). I had very good results with CE too.
For my EDC it has to be PE. Why? I always felt that PE blades really cut stuff and SE blades just rip it apart. You get much cleaner cuts with PE, it's easier to sharpen (although you have to sharpen it more often than SE).
And finally it's for the looks. I just can't find SE (CE is even worse) blades appealing to my eye
On the other hand - If there is a knife that I really want for my collection, that is not in production anymore and probably hard to get, I would also (and have done so) buy it with a SE or CE blade. I wouldn't use it anyway...
Cheers, Robert
Hey, Chad, question: Do you carry a firearm for self-defense when off-duty, or just knives?
And for everyone else...
I know some of you just don"t like the look of serrated edges, or think they rip instead of cut. But you really owe it to yourselves to try a serrated edge Spydie if you haven't up until now, at least one. Go ahead...cross over, you might like it!
Seriously, Spyderco makes the best serrations that I've used so far on any knives. They're very efficient.
Sometimes, it's a matter of we get tired of the same old thing, at least with me. So when (if?) I ever get a shot at a Paramilitary, I believe I'll go for the plain edge.
Now, understand, I'm not straying away from serrated Spydies...far from it! But I might delve into the "other side" for a bit. :)

PE for me. Guess I'm just old and set in my ways, but they're easy for me to sharpen and work better for me for the tasks I use knives for the most. Think I'd perforate my thumb if I tried peeling an apple or slicing garlic with a serrated blade.

I'm with you Paul, maybe it is an age thing :). All my knives are PE with the exception of my G10 Harpy which was bought expressly for on the water rescue work. I find a PE with a bit of "tooth" cuts fibrous material well enough and is much better for the other tasks my knife sees.

Plain edge for me - all my knives cut through 1/2" rope with ease and that's good enough. If I ever found a need for a serrated edge I would get an SE and carry it in addition to a plain edge.
used to be PE, i've carried my PE delica for quite a while, then i got a SE cricket & fell inlove with it, my new native is also SE... i'd switch to SE completely if it wasn't for ease of sharpening issues.
Chad, which firearm do you carry? on duty i carry a Colt Commando, but i'll be discharged soon (120 days & counting :p ) & i've been wanting to get a pistol, recommendations?

I prefer standard edge myself. Don't do enough rope cutting for serrations.
Just bought a combo edge Endura tho. Love it!

I prefer both. Most of my recent purchases have been plain-edge, but my primary EDC has recently been an SE S-curved Meerkat and it has been hard to beat.
i've been wanting to get a pistol, recommendations?
Currently, I own a Sig Sauer P228 in 9mm, and I'm very well-pleased with it. I've owned a few Sigs over the years, and they're top-shelf.
I also own a Smith & Wesson Tactical in .40 caliber. Very smooth and accurate pistol.
Glocks are also excellent, very reliable.
Heckler & Koch also offers outstanding pistols.
I've owned one or more of all of the above at one time or another, and will give all my highest recommendations.
i want a 9mm... leaning towards a glock, i'm hearing only praises about them

Got to go PLAIN. Hey, my favorite ice cream is vanilla.
i.v.
Unsolicited advice:
Try to find a range where you can rent and shoot several different guns.
At the very least, go to a dealer and handle a bunch.
Finally, if you can, enroll in a course that teaches gun safety, laws, and combat techniques.

i have handled quite a few pistols, gone through a course in the army, but i only got to shoot with one pistol which the course provided. i checked out ranges where i can fure multiple weapons but they cost something like 50$ per weapon (ammo not included - & i have to fire at least 100 rounds for a tessting)... can afford that especially considering i'd have to buy the pistol later which isn't cheap... so i'm left with two options.. ask around for opinions wherever i can, or just get another new spydie :D

One thing you may consider about serrated/plain edge is that spyderco's SEs are assymetrically profiled.

Hey Jim!
Sorry for the late reply! Uh...I do not foresee Hawaii EVER having CCW permitted, so at the very least I have my "natural weapons" and I always carry a knife in pocket...
The only thing my Roto-Holster is rigged to is my box spring! LOL!
Stay safe brother...and God bless!

Yeah! Codeman I could go along with other Dyad Jr. also coming back in S30V. It definitely has it's place. Have you ever done any hard work with a big DYAD? If any :spyder: is a comeback candidate it is without a doubt the DYAD ( big or little). I hope the folks at the Great :spyder: factory are hearing this one. Thank you sir

PE and SE both have their place. I have a smattering of CE, SE and PE in my collection. My EDC SE Police is great for everything except slicing my kid's pizza :p . Coarse whittling is ok with a light touch. I eat the whole apple, core and all, so I don't need to peel much. CE is a practical compromise.
Bring back the Dyad!!! I agree S30V. Micarta scales for me! Carbon would be nice too. Mr. Glesser, are you listening?

No, I don't have a Dyad, just a micarta Dyad Jr. That's why I want one or both with an upgraded steel!
