Hi Sal,

simple question: how does Wegner Sr.(C48), lock strength etc., fulfills the MBC requirements; completely? almost? 80 percent?,or ...?

If Wegner were not near the MBC standards, I would suggest to improve it in the future version (if it appears).

Best regards, Franco G.

I believe the Wegner is an excellent defensive tool. I am not sure exactly what the lock strength is, but it is plenty strong and very reliable. Every one I have seen locks up like a bank vault.

Hi Franco. Welcome to the Spyderco forum. We have been to Zagreb. Nice city.

MBC rating (?) poses additional questions.

With regards to lock strength, I have set a standard that is at least 2 - 3 times what I think would be strong enough. This is a new rating for us and not very many knives will actually be that strong. There are many knives with very strong locks on the market. Try not to confuse Spyderco's own rating as any sort of industry standard. We do this for our own model development. The Wegner does rate as heavy duty use.

We make many knives with very strong reliable locks, but they aren't MBC lock strength rated by our own standards.

Reliability is more of an issue than strength where locks are concerned.

An MBC (at this time) is one that was designed with MBC in mind. That doesn't mean that a knife designed for another use wouldn't make a good MBC tool.

The Tim Wegner design was primarily designed as a hunter's tool, but it has found a good number of owners that have found other uses. It is a rock solid tough knife that I would match up against most on the market.

Since you have asked the question, and I am not the only source;

What, besides lock strength, would be necessary to rate a knife as MBC?

Though my training in MBC is not highly extensive(just a few years at most), I've gravitated to knives that have fast deployability(low drag from the pocket), and as Sal mentioned, reliability. There are only a few models(at most) that I can quickly and dependably open and have ready more than others.
As far as blade shapes, I think there are too many blade shapes that could be considered 'good' for MBC to be able to rate them as acceptable, swept, drop, tanto, clip, and those yet to be designed, etc.IMO

Thanks Sal, thanks Ken, for answers. I understood that Wegner is 'heavy duty' and, according to some previous Sal's answer, that means at least 100 inch/lbs per inch of blade. This has to be compared with Spyderco MBC lock standard (200 inch/lbs per inch of blade), with Chinook and Gunting both exceeding that numbers.
I understand that lock strength is not enough - it is reliability of the lock that also counts. Also, IMO, the sturdiness of both lock and handle. Anyhow, why not bring Wegner to the MBC lock standard in the future? It would be slightly lighter alternative to, say, Chinook. The easiest way would be (I guess) to add the second liner and compression lock, maybe a nested one?
Ken, could you be more specific as far as Wegner is concerned? Regards,
Franco G

P. S. Thanks Sal for comment about Zagreb. Otherwise, I was born at Croatian coast (Dalmatia region). Hundreds of islands, good for sailing. Check this link

Hi Franco, sorry most of my comment was on Sal's last question about MBC standards and how one would set up a rating for that classification.
As far as the Wegner is concerned, I'd say it is more than adequate for defensive applications. The Endura and Delica have been popular defensive carry for many people for some time now, and the Wegner is at least as solid as they are. In fact T. Wegner has posted a detailed post on Bladeforums awhile back that addressed the defensive applicability of his design. It may be worth doing a search for(probably on the Spyderco forum there).
