Hi samo. I, too, often wonder how many were made and how many are in collector hands. I posted a question a long while ago asking if owners actually carry and use this knife. I also wonder about the extra maintenance required due to the many cut outs in the blade and the handle. Since it has less metal than conventional knives, is the "R" invisible to metal detectors?

Aside from the "R"'s unique design, I like its thin grip, lightweight, and almite (?) handle. The "Q" is similar in concept but I prefer the "R" for its larger size.

Edit: Anyone know why it was named the "R"?

My guess is that "R" comes after "Q". I have #103 but its not used or carried.

I've had much less metal set off the stupid airport metal detectors.

Interesting question toothed! My guess -- Since "Q" is the name of that gadget guy in those Bond movies, I guess "R" might be his successor... I guess nothing escapes the metal detector or X-ray scan because knives do register! I have three spydies which is under the custody of the Singapore Government! Since initial production sprint for any spydies would chart 1,200 or less, that'll be my best guess as to the quantity of those "R" lurking out there... I once held this knife in a shop, nice feel but rather pricey! It never made it as an SKU item on the Spyderco product catalog....
