View Full Version : Taking it apart?

Two of them, actually. First, there is a slight annoyance with my G10 Lum Tanto. Hey Sal, how about rounding off the back end? I can't get my mind straight, what's it called? The very back of the blade inside the handle. Anyways, on the Military it's nice and round. Perhaps you should start doing that to the Lum Tanto. It's not a major problem, but when my hand is up close to the front, it kinda bites. If I were to take it apart to do it myself with a Dremel, would I ever be able to get the thing back together? I'm not worried about the handle, but more about the blade and how it fits in.

Second, can the Jot Singh come apart? It looks kinda tricky. I want to cut off the top part of the hump and drill a new hole down lower, and then possible round out the front end of the handle a bit - not quite sure how to do it without ruining the entire thing. Is it possible(or will the Micarta crack or shatter or otherwise self-destruct)? Do those pins in the handle come out, or is it pretty much stuck as-is? I suppose the blade mods might be possible while still in the handle, but if I can I'd rather take it out.

Yes, I really am crazy. Yes, I really might do these things! Back to the mad scientist lab(aka the basement)...

I think you will find modifying a heat treated blade challenging at best. Annealing it and redoing the heat treat would be tricky also. Taking knives apart and modifying the handles is possible, it just depends on your skill level. The Lum Tanto project sounds like it might be the most do-able, but I'm not sure I understand what you want to do precisely.

Hi Jrollins. On the olum, I'll considedr your suggestion for future models. As mentioned, grinding hard steel can be a chore.

On the Khalsa, the model is not designed to take apart. Every pin is a press fit. Unless you are a knife maker, you might reconsider.
