View Full Version : Culling time - need opinions
The time has come for Spyderco to start making decisions as to what will remain in the line for 2002 and w2hat will be retired to make room for new models.

1. JD Smith
2. Tim Zowada
3. Native Stainless Steel
4. Merlin FRN
5. Police Tie Clip
6. Police Necklace
7. Pro Grip FRN/Kraton
8. Snapit
9. Rescue Jr.
10. Dragonfly FRN
Sal,
Here are my 10 to be culled:
1. Police Model Stainless handle
Rationale: Available in G10 which has better gripping properties.
5. Endura Stainless handle
Rationale: Stainless handles seem most appropriate for engraving, gifts, etc. and for that I would think knives smaller than the Endura are popular (i.e. Dragonfly, Delica).
11. CoPilot
Rationale: Navigator fills a similar niche (better IMHO).
27. Native stainless handle
Rationale: same as for Endura stainless. FRN Native is awesome, eliminate SS.
29. Calypso Jr. stainless handle
Rationale: Same as for eliminating Native and Endura SS.
36. Bob Terzuola Starmate
Rationale: Great knife but time to rotate it out to make room for more.
39. JD Smith
Rationale: Same as for Starmate.
46. Bill Moran FB trailing point
Rationale: Same as for Starmate & JD Smith. Keep the newer Moran drop point.
50. Police model necklace
51. Police model tie clip
Rationale: Jewelry items that are a bit too bourgeois.
Thanks for asking! -Alan

You ask a toughie ..... how do you have the nerve to cancel so many lives of so many great knives. I guess the trick is to keep the best of the best.
Well, here's my cut at it, as difficult as it is (not in any particular order);
Police G10
CoPolit
Progrip stainless
Catcherman
Rescue Jr.
Ladybug II
Dyad Micarta
Dyad FRN
Tim Zowanda
Eduar Bradichansky Shabara
Sal,
#12 Pro Girp Stainless/kraton handle
#13 Pro Grip FRN/Kraton handle
#19 Dragonfly stainless handle
#20 Dragonfly FRN handle
#31 Navigator
#37 Tim Zowada
#38 D'Holder Toad
#39 J.D. Smith
#40 Eduar Bradichansky Shabaria
#51 Police model tie clip
This is very difficult.
Sincerely,

1. Police G10 (the ss version sells better, and the G10 serves the same niche as the Military)
2. Endura 2 (roughly the same niche as the ss Police)
3. Delica 2 (will be replaced by aluminum and Ti "Salsas"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
4. Co-Pilot (Navigator is a more advanced design)
5. Dragonfly 2 (Almite Navigator fills the metal handle 2" blade niche, keep the FRN version)
6. Tim Zowda
7. Toad
8. JD Smith (i've heard that this doesn't sell well)
9. Police necklace
10. Police tie-clip
11. ss Pro-grip
12. Wegner (It isn't selling. Perhaps replace with new Wegner 2 and different marketing?)

31. Navigator
35. Peter Herbst
39. JD Smith
46. Bill Moran trailing pt.

51. Police Tie Clip
-Endura Stainless handle

-one of the dragonflys
-co pilot

-if a plainedge Zowada w/slightly larger hole won't be introduced, I say retract it completely from current production.
Thanks for asking,

This is incredibly hard for me to say, but the best thing to do for the company would be to let the market decide. I would cut the models that are not selling well or that are not meeting acceptable profits. No matter what gets cut some people won't be happy. However, the ultimate goal should be to maximize profitability while producing a great product.
If I had to pick from this list the following 10 would get cut:
SS Police (g-10 version should be replacement)
Pro Grip FRN/Kraton handle
Snap it
Remote Release
Navigator
Tim Zowada
D'Holder Toad
JD Smith
Eduard Bradichansky Shabaria
Eduard Bradichansky Spydecard
I will also agree with others who say the Mouse should be in the regular lineup and replace the toad and navigator.
I love the Wegner, but could live without it if it is replaced with the Wegner II.

Here's my thoughts and why.
#50 Police model necklace.
Make way for a new miniature Spyderco model each year or different inlays.
#51 police tie clip.Same reasons as above.
#1 Police model stainless steel.
I prefer G10 for grip.
#17 Snap it.
The remote release is a much better hook type retainer.Maybe with a sheepsfoot blade.
#16 Rescue junior.
The rescue fills the bill here.
#25 Dyad micarta
#26 Dyad jnr FRN
#38 Toad.
Make the mouse a regular line.Hopefully reduce the price also.
#40 Shabaria.
Time for new models
#39 JD smith.
Same as above.

Ricki

The two things I would surely get rid of are the jewelry pieces:
#50 - Police Model Necklace
#51 - Police Model Tie Clip
Spydie Knives are great tools - it's what you do best.
I hate voting against any Spdie's, but I'll give you a couple:
#1 - Police Stainless (G-10 is better)
#29 - Calypso Jr Stainless
Four knives that should remain in the Spydie line are as follows:
#24 - Military - My personal favorite
#36 - Starmate - Such a good looking knife
#48 - Gunting - Way too interesting
#49 - Gunting trainer - Needed for training with the Gunting.
I'm glad the final isn't mine!
One way or the other, you pay for your tools!
Sorry, but I came up with 12. #s 1,3,8,10,13,16,25,27,31,38,39,40

I'd have to go along with dumping the large stainless steel models. Ditto the jewelry. Also the Starmate. I'm glad I have mine, but you have more ergonomic models in that size.
I'd give the Shabaria a little more time, but what do I know? <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> I'd keep the trainers, and work up a 'PC' marketing campaign aimed at self-defense for women. Sell a package of Delica knife, trainer, and video tape. Wouldn't that be something if it took off?
I'd guess that the Bob Lum Tanto isn't a perennial best seller.
The Catcherman has never appealed to me, but neither has fishing. Ditto the Toad, and, um, toading. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
I'd keep the Merlin FRN, especially plain edge, since I use one very often for letters and packages.
I think the Vesuvious could sell well, but I'm not sure what the production version is.
I'd keep one of the Moran fixed-blade models, at least for a year.
WRT the Gunting series, Bram indicates that there are a lot of LEA interested in it. That could translate to a lot of units sold....

I suppose I better add my AUS$0.0384986. The problem with this sort of question is that knives which appeal to internet knife aficianados are not necessarily those that do well in the market place. For that reason I think it is important to keep all the stainless versions as I have a feeling that they are popular with the general ELU. Anyway here's my list:
Police G10-I don't think it has proved as popular as the stainless model
Copilot-see Navigator
Remote Release-the Snap-It fills the niche
Dyad-too expensive to be generally accepted
Navigator-I love it but the Meerkat and slip-joint will fill the niche

It is probably time to retire
the Shabaria but I have difficulty taking money from a widow. For this reason I don't think the Shabaria and the Spydercard should be retired in the same year.
It is also probably time to retire the Starmate. I love mine and it is the only knife I carried for most of a year. Unfortunately I moved on to other Spyderco's and I think most people have too.
I think the Ayoob should be given another year. It hasn't had a lot of press and it might take off in time.
I think it is way too early to talk about retiring the Gunting and its trainer. The Gunting movement has just started. I think a lot of law enforcement agencies are going to end up adopting the Gunting.
The Delica and Endura trainers should be given more time too. I have become real attached to my Gunting trainer and would like to see more trainers not less.

Because I HAVE to pick:
13. Progrip FRN - better alternatives in current lineup
18. Remote Release - Snap-It for that limited market
35. Herbst - never liked it
50. Necklace - no jewelry for me
51. Tie Clip - the tie will be dead soon, and the tip clip should have been long ago
7. & 10. Delica/Endura Trainers - possibly too "specialized" for the Delica/Endura market (I could be wrong there...)
23. Ladybug Sheepsfoot - never saw the use of the teeth without usable point in such a small size
25. Lg Dyad Micarta - too expensive and uncomfortable (but bring back the micarta Dyad JR!!!)
37. Zowada - never liked it either

Since I have no access to sales numbers on these models, which definitely must be a factor, I will only relate my preferences and models I have bought and ones I would buy again or will be buying for myself or as gifts.
18. Remote Release--- I have one or rather my wife has it. I think the effective length of the grip appeals to her. She will not use a knife where her hand contacts any part of the blade. I prefer this arrangement of snap over the Snapit, doesn't interfere with the blade at all.
3. Harpy Stainless handle--- I have the G10 model which I use pretty hard. I think the grip of the G10 is more secure.
19. Dragonfly stainless handle----
20. Dragonfly FRN handle----
I have the carbon fiber Dragonfly which is nice to look at, butt slippery. A lot of knife for the size butt the Calypso Jr is more competent and fits my hand better.
21. Cricket black FRN handle--- I got a bubblegum pink one for my daughter. Really didn't seem like a Spyderco quality item butt she likes its cute factor.
24. Military G10 handle--- Don't think this one should be on the list. I have a serrated user and the Forum 2000 model. I would definitely buy another if I lost my user.
26. Dyad jr FRN handle --- I bought the micarta Dyad Jr and again my wife appropiated it. Likes its versatilty. I don't need it myself as I usually am carrying two knives, serrated and plain
27. Native stainless handle---
28. Native black FRN handle---
I have two blue Natives. I like them for their heft and design butt don't use them. I find the Calypso Jr fills this size for me best. I think the only reason to choose the stainless handle would be for engraving it as a gift.
29. Calypso Jr. stainless handle---
30. Calypso Jr. black FRN handle---
I have two micarta models and recently misplaced/lost my fishscale one. I will definitely replace the LW and if the price is right I'll probably pick up another micarta plainedge. Again the only reason for the SS would be for engraving.
32. Viele--- My favorite Spydie, for looks and feel, I have two original and a new VG10 and will probably pick up another new model.
34. Tim Wegner--- A "strong-like-bull" knife. I have one and its smaller version. I would buy an updated version.
36. Bob Terzuola Starmate--- I own one butt for some reason I don't use it much. Grabbing the Military instead in most instances.
43. Bob Lum Chinese Folder--- Interesting knife and I might buy one if it was a bit larger.
46. Bill Moran FB trailing point---
47. Bill Moran FB drop point---
I have two of the original mirror polished, one is my wife's campknife. And I bought a droppoint. All useful handy knives at a nice price point. I would buy more of the droppoint if I lost the others.
50. Police model necklace--- I bought two of these. Neither my wife or I wear them. Probably would not buy more.
No real opinions on the others except the Toad offends my senses and I don't carry knives as primary self defense weapons so the MBC line is not my cup of tea. I feel the one I have in my pocket can do the job if I keep it sharp and can deploy it cleanly.
I just recently started aquiring Spyderco knives but these are the ones that I am the least interested in buying.

Rather than listing specific spyderco models to keep or cull my .02 cents is more for types of knives.
Since a lot of "eye" appeal sells knives rather than function keep those knives that offer the most "eye
candy" for that market. For the knife buyer who wants fuction keep all the knives that are flat ground
lockback with "grippable" handles. I'm gona' get flammed for this next statement ,but, scrap ALL
linerlock knives in the line. Consider this....all of the "new" locking systems today are a type of
lockback. I personally don't trust linerlocks nor do I use them. I really wanted a spyderco chinese
but didn't buy one due to the linerlock. Lastly keep all knives with sales volumes that warrant inclusion
in the product line.

Sal, it's nice of you to ask online Spyderco fans for their opinions on which models should be "retired." I was tempted to respond immediately upon reading the post but decided to wait awhile to let my emotions calm down before saying anything. (Engage brain before putting mouth into gear). It hurt to see my personal sentimental favorites on someone else's hit list but I'm okay now.
My recommendation is to let the market decide--in terms of model profitability--which models will continue and which models will retire. IMO, the evolution of Spyderco knife designs is one of the chief reasons for the company's success.(Stagnation is a bad word). Spyderco should be applauded for bringing creative, innovative, and radical knife designs to the market--even if a particular design did not have apparent mass appeal. Because production resources are finite, less popular models identified through slow sales should give way to newer designs (possibly the next "big thing"<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>. To be sure, the market will identify--through continued sales--which knives are classics and should be kept in production.
Spyderco should monitor the small, medium, and large knife categories and ensure that all categories contain an adequate number of designs (EDC, tactical, hunting, etc.) that are each evaluated annually for updating or replacement by any one of the many other knives in the design pipeline.
As much as I would hate to see the SS Police, JD Smith, and Shabaria be taken out of production, if the model profitability analysis say they should "go" then so be it. Let's look forward to the bigger and better things to come from Sypderco.

Here’s my list. Mostly based on what I like in a Spyderco. And on what my non-knifeknut friends seem to like on a knife.
- G10 Police: I feel that it is a ‘Militarized’ Police, ergo, a compromise. And the Military seems like a better vehicle for G10 and a full flat grind on a 4 inch blade. The SS police is a classic, and I suspect that sales for this model should still be acceptable, so keep it.
- Catherman (FRN): I don’t fish and it appears to specialized for anything else but fishing.
- Toad: I don’t ‘toad’ either <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> . Seriously though, it looks ugly to me. For pure functionality and performance, the Mouse looks better to me.
- Endura SS: like was said before this thread, SS handles to me, work better for medium to small knives that look ‘pretty’. For that reason, I definitely would like to see the SS Dragonfly be kept in production.
- SS Harpy: for this model and the cutting action that it demands, I’d think that the SS may be too slippery. The FRN or G10 version seem to offer better and more reliable performance
- Pro-grip: SS & kraton, in a hunting knife seem, like a relatively poor compromise when compared to the Wegner.
- Co-pilot, I think that there are many other small knives in the line-up that can perform better and look better too. For example: SS Dragonfly, FRN Dragonfly, and Navigator.
- Ladybug 2: love the full serrations but hate the sheepsfoot point on this model. A fully serrated ladybug with a point is actually a pretty good idea, so is a full plain edge on these little wonders!
- Starmate: for pure function I would prefer the Military, but the Starmate is very pretty. How about taking that one step further? Starmate jr. with a G10 handle and a titanium bolster?
- Shabaria: a bit too extreme for me. I don’t see the functionality in this model, and I don’t think it’s nice to look at.
- Native 2: Neither pretty or more functional than the FRN Native.
- Tim Zowada: I think I’d prefer a Native with G10 handles to this one. The swedge seems a bit too extreme, taking away from the edge geometry of the primary grind.
I hope that we on the forum get a message when the final decisions on the culling are made? That way, we can quickly ‘stock up’ on our favorites before the dealers don’t have them anymore.
Thanks,
Wouter

Sal,
I would like to request that once you have made your decision, you let us know right away about the results. That way, I can quickly decide which of the discontinued models I simply "must" have and buy them before they're gone.
Thanks, Jeff/1911.

Hi Sal!
Just curious if you might have some information as to how our lists have shaped Spyderco's decisions for the year's lineup.
Thanks! (See, I want to make sure that if you're going to drop one of the knives I want, that I get it first). <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
Hi Michael. We have the totals for the question, which was asked on 2 forums and sent to 100 distrutors and dealers.
I'll post the totals of the question as soon as my world slows down a bit (over the next few days).
However, I won't be posting the actual decisions until OCT when the new catalog is scheduled. Sorry. There are other factors that influence decisions besides the survey.

#2.-Police model G10 handle-Stainless model serves the same purpose but better
#10.-Delica trainer (red FRN)-Endura trainer works fine, not too much size difference
#18.-Remote Release-obviously not practical for EDC, don't think it's that popular either, though I may be wrong
#50.-Police model necklace-looks more like a toy or a piece of jewelry, also too small
#26.-Dyad Jr. FRN- big Dyad works fine
#29.-Calypso Jr. SS-stainless steel handle is fine, but the blade steel dooesn't compare to the VG10 of the FRN model
#13.-Pro-Grip FRN/Kraton-SS model works fine, looks cool too
#16.-Rescue Jr.-big model will suffice
Can't stand to see any more go!*sob* Anyway, here's 8 for retirement.

I'll post my list and then some reasons:
1. Police Stainless
2. Police G10
3. Endura Stainless
8. Delica Stainless
14. Catcherman
17. Snap-it
18. Remote Release
19. Dragonfly stainless
20. Dragonfly FRN
41. Massad Ayoob
The police models are great, but they are 4&1/8". That puts them 1/8" past a pocket knife in some areas. The Military, at 4" even, would be the knife for those areas.
Endura and Delica stainless are heavier than necessary. The pocket clip does not reverse.
Catcherman. I rarely have to fillet a fish in such a hurry I need a one-handed opening.
Snap-its and remote release are right handed only. The niche could be filled by an aftermarket shackle that replaces the clothing clip on the Rescues, Enduras, and Delicas. I find a small loop of string in the lanyard hole and an Uncle Mike's keyring snap on the belt works great on those occations I need to carry the knife outside my pocket.
Dragonflys are too difficult to open. I have big hands, but find the Ladybugs easier.
Massad Ayoob just looks wierd. Looks like its about to fold shut onto my fingers.
Speaking of fishing, I have noticed that those orange foam keyfloaters you can buy at the hardware store have enough boyancy to float a Delica, but not an Endura (lightweights). I would guess they could float a Rescue Jr, but maybe not a Rescue. Just something the other Spyder folks might find interesting.

Sal;
I can see that alot of people are putting the snap-it and remote release on the cull list. The only thing I would like to say is that non-standard attachment mechanisms are a good thing for people that carry knives in different situations and getting rid of both of these would be a bad thing I think.
Just my thoughts.
Do you have the compliled data ready yet or will that be a couple more weeks?
Thanks
Paul
Hi Paul. We have the data. I just haven't had the time to sit down and list the "opinions" on the forums. Keep nagging me.

So what knives are going to be culled from the herd? If any knives I want are on the list, I might go to a knife dealer and ask for a discount since they will be discontinued.
Keepin' it real...real sharp, that is.

I remember how disappointed I was to see that the Wayne Goddard LTWT was being discontinued. (I wish I had bought more than two of the plain edged ones when I had the chance.) Hope this doesn't happen to any more of my favorites. Here are ones I can see go to make way for new and exciting future models.
#3 Harpy SS- too heavy IMO
#12 Pro Grip SS- like FRN better
#14 Catcherman-unless you put a reversible clip on it!!!
#16 Rescue Jr.-bigger is better
#17 Snap It-don't like sheepsfoot version, isn't pointed one already discontinued?
#19 Dragonfly SS- too heavy, FRN better IMO
#25 Dyad Micarta- looks slippery, never held one though
#27 Native SS-FRN version is perfect!
#40 Shabaria- Never really appealed to me
#29 Calypso Jr. SS-too heavy, slippery
I'm sure some will disagree but as you can tell by my choices I prefer FRN or G-10 to any steel or aluminum handles. They've got a better grip to me and I've never had an FRN fail.
Eagle1
Man, I'm not that familiar with the spyderco knives to chop the crop, but I'm sensing that there's a little dislike for the SS handles. What gives? I kind of like the heft of the ss, but maybe I just have strong arms. just kidding. To each his own.
