I've seen this mentioned before, but what about a hollow grind straight razor from spyderco?
There are few manufacturers around and it would be a unique addition to the lineup.
I don't know how well it would sell, so I guess that would be the trick.

Would anyone here buy one?

I own three straight razors and I wouldn't get any one of them within a foot of my face. So, no.

Maybe if it included a video with Sal demonstrating how to hone, strop and use it??

I have an old Boker Tree Brand and never thought to put it to my face. I have grown attached to it over the years:) My face that is:)
Would love to have that "old world" knowledge to put steel to my face something very gentlemen-ly about it. Someday I will go to a real barber and get a shave....someday.
I would buy a Spydie razor if it was like Ray Rogers Razor...a very cool folder but I can't remember the issue or mag it was featured in. It is also on Mr. Janich's website. Very Cool
Take Care!!!!!

I shave every morning or so with one of the cheaper Dovo straight razor I bought a few years ago. There's nothing like it in the world but the learning curve is rather painful....
I'd buy a Spyderco razor in a heartbeat!

I don't know about using one for shaving but I'd love to see a razor pattern folder from Spyderco.

Oh Yes!! Why didn't I think of that before. If anyone could make an icon of "days gone by" a new and popular men's grooming tool it would be the Great :spyder: Factory. I also like the idea of a video of Mr. Glesser showing us how to use it and how to sharpen it. I even have a tentative name for it: The Spyder-Glide. And also a really nice case with Spydie's logo on it. OK let's get to the drawing board!!! NO SERRATED MODEL PLEASE!!!! :D

I would buy it unless it comes in SpyderEdge ;) ...

Hi Klattman. I could do that. I shaved with a straight razor for many years. Even shaved my face with some knives. ;)

I love shaving with my straight razor, started using it about 4 years ago...
It's not hard to learn, at least it wasn't to me. (and I have no scars to prove it)
Anyway, I'd buy a straight razor from :spyder: , of course!
AND the video, of course!
Naturally the Spydershave/Spyderazor would have to have a clip and hole, please! (how about these names? they even sound flashy :D )
But no serrations!

Mr. Glesser you just have to do this. This will be bigger than you think. Just think you could do a TV commerial with you on it. Right after a very smooth shave you could have a couple of really "Knock Out" looking women with their arms around you rubbing your face and telling you what a great smooth shave the "Spyder Glide" does. On top of that it would make one fantastic "SUPERBOWL" commercial. Do it!!! It has tremendous possibilities!! :D :spyder: :D

Well I'm betting that all the :spyder: freaks here would buy one just for the sake of collecting.

Then the die hards would have to buy three -> two to use and one for the collection!

Don't forget to SpydieStrop your Spydieshave before use!

You forgot the Spydie compound to put on your Spydie strop. Also it should be made with a higher chrome stainless so there will be no rust worries. :) :spyder:

Any stainless steel is stainless enough for a razor (they still sell straight carbon-steel razors). You have to keep it clean and dry regardless -> better to concentrate on the edge performance I think.

I'm not sure what hardness would be best for a straight razor, and I do not know what Dovo or TI etc. actually use, but Sal and the :spyder: crew can figure that part out.

I just want something that doesn't exist yet. :o

I have PM'ed Sal, and if he does not bite my bait, I will offer a design for your perusal, one I did a few years back, Spyder hole and all! Obviously with Sal's permission, of course!!

Don't pick on those of us with OCD. Even if I were not a die hard, I would still have to buy at least one extra to keep the OCD from running rampant. In case I lost one, damaged it, etc. Maybe just one extra would be enough. Of course, two extras would be better. Maybe three; one to give as a gift, two to put aside..aaarrrggghhhhh!!!!

I agree with "Zrexxer" on this one, what he said is funny and true!

I have my grandfathers straight razor but would never shave with it.
I guess some thngs never change though.

SO NO!

Why would I want one just to put in a drawer and never use? Altough I like the idea of the hole in it and the commerial thing, that's funny!

I'm really for this project since I was considering using a strait razor to shaves myself for a big time. The only thing that keeps me from throwing away my crapy Mach3 is that such razor is truly hard to find in Canada and that I didn’t trust the brands offered here...

I would also be interested in the video event if I already know how to use such a razor.

BTW if you are real Spyderco lovers, you should know that almost any plain edge can be use to shave yourself...

I would buy one. I would also be interested to see, which steel Spyderco would choose. I have been using a lower upper class Dovo with "swedish" (meaning old fashion high carbon) steel. Didn't find it all that hard to learn. It takes more time and care than the standard Gillette/Schick so I use it one once per week on the weekend, when I have the time (electrical for the weekdays). But the result is much better (even though it has only one blade) and my skin has improved significantly.

Sorry, I meant that three was a minimum. :o
You need two to use if you shave every day, the perfect edge needs time to 'rest', and also because it allows you to go longer before honing. How many you get for your collection is up to you!

I would really like to see this happen. Not sure where the spydie hole would go. I would hope that it would be extremely FUNCTIONAL as a real razor, because I would use it!

I too am VERY interested in the type of steel that would be chosen and why, just for educational purposes if nothing else. Sal?

I would use whatever Dovo is using. In my experience shaving with a straight razor, Dovo's performed the best. They use a softer steel that "burrs" well under the strop. It's the burr that does the cutting.

I spent a great deal of time with my razor unded a microscope. that's how I learned to sharpen them.

I've shaved with D-2 and MBS-26. The harder "knife" steels do not burr well and don't work as well.

I'd go for a set, especially if it came with an instructional video.
Steel type? I remember reading that one chose one's razor according to skin and beard type. I guess the expert on the historical side is Mr Lorenzi of the Lorenzi knife shop in Milan, he wrote a book (amongst other cutlery books) on the history of the razor and has the razor museum which can be visited by appointment above his shop.

The only way I could come near to making it happen would be in some kind of collaboration with Brian at Country knives. I could design the set, (two models would be needed, one regular and one smaller blade for "close-in shaping"). Brian could drive the project and do an an exclusive carry. Brian could also connect you with all of the other gear (books, strops, soap, etc.)

We could put a "sticky" thread on the forum where users could share their "adventure" with learned "tricks".

Learning to shave with a straight razor is a great adventure for a knife aficianado. Something that is good to learn.

My first attempt was at the 1983 "hammer-in" with Don Hastings, Bill Moran and Bill Bagwell.

It was a real "learning experience". One of the Canadian knifemakers (Mick) said I looked like "I'd been trying to shove hot butter up a wild-cat's a$$ with a hot ice pick".

I guess it's a thought.

I have been playing with straight rzaor sharpening for little over a year. And I agree with Sal, very educational! I is not as dangerous as often sugested. Just make shure your razor is sharp enough to cut a hear a centemeter above your fingers, start with easy surfaces like your cheeks, and consentrate on what you are doing.

I have used 12 C 27 single hollow grind, for razors' blades, as Sandvik made that steel for that type of use, as in G3 etc type razors.
Fanie Le Grange, an EXCELLENT South African knifemaker, ONLY uses 12 C 27 for his knives!
Very good stain resistance, smooth structure at the edge, easy to sharpen... What more could you want?

I'm afraid that this would be one Spydie that had no attraction for me whatsoever. A character on another forum I frequent (Telemarktips.com) referred to himself as a facial hair fundementalist and I also fit that description pretty much (although I'm not a radical :)). I've had a full beard for the last 40 years and can't see myself shaving even with a :spyder: straight razor.

Would it still be a :spyder: and have a :spyder: emblem even if you only design it?

Please give it a shot. Looks like we have a bunch of buyers here, and I still think that many would buy it simply as an addition to their :spyder: collection, since it would be so unique.

Ok now that the Spyder-Glide Razor is in the works we now need to market an After Shave lotion with Spydie's emblem on the bottle of course. All Right!! Calvin Klien get out of the way now!!!! :D

If we continue like that spyderco is soon going to steal Wal Mart's market with all those product made with the :spyder: on it...

Seriously I think that we're lucky if we can someday put our hand on this razor... As Sal said; "The only way I could come near to making it happen would be in some kind of collaboration with Brian at Country knives."...

In anyway I like that project!
