i was told i got a serial numbered one? was there a numbered batch of knives? how many? anyone? :pApproximately the first 200 of every new model, and new variant of an existing model, get numbered with collectors numbers. When a new model is first introduced, one particular style is designated as the "standard" for that model. The knives of that style carry just a number, without a letter suffix. Any and all other styles of the same model carry the number with a V suffix to desingate a "variant". If more that one handle material is offered, each is a style. Within each handle material, if more than one color is offered, each is a style. Same goes if more than one blade shape is offered (as with the Meerkat), and finally each edge configuration is considered a style.
Some collectors only sign up for the "standard" knife of each new model, some for all the variants. But, since some of the collectors have dropped out of the program for one reason or another, some of these knives wind up being sold to the gereral public. So with the Salt, one of the original black ones, either PE or SE, would have been designated as "standard", so somewhere out in the world there is a black FRN Salt with 043. If, for the sake of arugment, it was PE, then, in addition to your yellow SE there are a black SE and a yellow PE out there somewhere numbered 043V.
thanks!
so basically i have a good catch right? :)
