I'm doing spring break in London.
A good friend of mine is doing the year abroad there with college. He is big into evolutionary bio and is writing a book on it.
I'm really looking forward to the trip but it is going to be wierd not having a spydie on me. I guess I'll have nothing but a Inova X5.
Any travel tips or places to visit? I've been to europe before and have been to all the major places except the british isles. I am packing super light, might only travel with 2 carryon's to make things simple.
We plan on walking most of the city, for the last several months he has been walking planned historic routes he made up. I'm really looking into the historcal aspect of the city. My understanding that the only real downfall of London is how expensive everything is.

I think you can still have "a spydie on yah"... unless my brain is shot, a slipjoint is still legal there... which means you just gotta find a UK Pen Knife now :p
ditto on the UK Pen Knife, how more appropriate can it get? :)
make sure to put it in your cargo-suitcase though and not in your hand-luggage...heheh ;)

aero student,
London is great for a short stay. Anything longer than three days, the gloss wears off and the seedy underbelly becomes more prevelant! :(
History, it's got it in bag fulls! Walking is a good way to do it. A lot of the museams are free entry, but when you have to pay, boy do you pay! You may be a little early for some things as Buckingham Palace, but try to get to the House of Commons in the Strangers Gallery and see the Mother of Democracy at work. This is a lot tighter since 9/11 and a couple of pro-hunt supporters made the floor of the House in a protest. But I believe that entry is still possible on a first come first served basis. Theatre, if it's your bag, is also a good night out. It seems that London theatre has always attracted big Hollywood names and I believe that Christian Slater and Kevin Spacey are playing at the moment. Even Puff Diddy, or whatever his name is today, is looking to buy a couple of London theatres!
Avoid taxis, the tube will get you to anywhere you want to go outside of walking distance. Don't carry alot of cash. Travellers cheques and cards are always best. It is expensive, but then so is the whole UK. But variety in resturants and clubs is huge. A big problem in London in recent times, is as the UK is esentially a small geographically sized country, the capital is a magnet for petty criminals from all over Europe and in particular Eastern Europe on the asylum ticket.
Short train rides, about an hour, outside of the capital, bring all sorts of other opportunities for the history buff in you. Windsor, with the Queen's residence is a nice place and Canterbury, with it's 1000 year old cathedral is particularly nice.
Head North and Yorkshire has some of the finest walking country and Nothumberland a history going back before the Roman invasion of 53BC! Alnwick, (pronounced Annic), has a castle which was Hogworts in the Harry Potter movies and was Camelot in Disney's King Arthur and the Spaceman!
I hope you have a great time. The UK is not a patch, morally or socially from what it used to be, but it still has a lot to offer. Enjoy.
God Bless,
Simon.

There is a great pub off Kensington High st. called the elephant and castle, another pub right on Kensington church st. I believe called Churchills, great Thai food and good beer. I brought my Dodo with me as checked baggage last june. I was there to see friends in Derbyshire and Cheshire. Try to go to a east end pie shop while your there and try not to do too many touristy things, the people are so warm and funny. England is my favorite place in the world!
