I’m new here and have been enjoying reading some of the posts. Can’t really saw I’m a :spyder: owner (yet) since the one I purchased on ebay tonight isn’t here yet. I bought one of the BRK natives a few years ago but sold it to someone who doesn’t have a problem with blade play. I called the factory and was relieved to find out that the problem was due to them being made by Camillus. Problem is I noticed a very slight amount on other :spyder: 's I looked at (after reading some of the educational posts I am beginning to think I am just to picky) I was turned off. I bought a browning ice storm for the VG-10 blade and ‘low-pocket’ carry position. Now I must send that back for repair/replacement but don’t want to be without VG-10 and thought it a perfect excu I mean reason to buy a Native while I am waiting. The decision to get VG-10 instead of CPM S30V was because of finances but I am still thinking of saving up for the S30V. can someone please tell me the advantages of one over the other?

Both are excellent steels, take a great edge and hold it extremely well. Mostly a case of it making more sense to use the best "local" product rather than shipping S30V from the US to Japan for the Seki built knives or VG10 from Japan to the US for the Golden built ones. Far as the knives go, both the C41 Native and the C78 Native III are very good. Major difference is the thicker, sculptured handle on the C78. Fits the hand very well and makes the knife more comfortable for extended use. The tradeoff for that is a somewhat bulkier feel in your pocket. Some prefer the wire clip of the C78, others prefer the solid one on the C41.

Seems like the S30V is the trendy steel this year. But VG-10 is no junk either. I'd fully trust a VG-10 blade, especially when it belongs to a Spyderco ;)

The VG10 Native 3 has a much tighter action(with no blade play)than the S30V Native.I like the Native 3 except for the wire clip.

I concur, Dialex. Far and away the vast majority of my blades are VG-10, and all are sharper than I have any right to be carrying around. :D I have played with the S30V a bit, but VG-10 is still my favorite, at least for the moment.

My thanks to everyone who responded. Sounds like I made the right choice with the C78.
