Selling 9 year Spyderco Collection

My question for all is: What would you consider to be the best place to sell a large Spyderco collection?



I am the owner of about 9 years worth of numbered #003 Spyderco knives and some very unusual and rare additional pieces and groupings. With only a few exceptions, most of my collection is new in the box and most knives are in MINT condition. I spent 7 years with the company and have moved on to other endeavors - so it's time to part company with a very unusual collection and create an opportunity for someone else to carry on with what I've started. The buyer of my collection, will also have the opportunity to continue to add to it by assuming my position as the #003 collector with Spyderco. Obviously, they would need to approve that transition at Spyderco.



I'm considering various auction sites or a sealed bid auction. If I can't sell the collection together for an acceptable price, I will probably list if for sale piece by piece. Please post your thoughts and email me if you - or someone you know, is interested in my collection when it goes up for sale in the next couple of weeks.

Last year, there was a large collection up for sale on Ebay. 91 knives (including some rare ones), all #12 if I remember correctly, and the buyer would assume that postion in the collectors club upon purchase. The bidding started at $15,500. I checked on it every now and then out of curiosity, but didn't see any bids. Did anyone follow that auction and see if it sold?

Ebay probably isn't the best place for such an auction, but it might not be too bad. Personally, I would advertise it on all the major internet knife forums beforehand to make sure the word got out. You could always put a high reserve on it on Ebay and if it doesn't sell, just try someplace else.

Wow, I'd give almost anything to have that type of collection. Unfortunately, that does NOT include my first born, which is what I would probably have to sell to get the money for it... so good luck, Steve... I agree with cerulean. Ebay is probably not your best bet, since most of those people are just impulse buyers (like myself, unfortunately... ;-) )

They actually PAY me for this??

Wow, I was extatic when I got my #679 Chinook, couldnt even imagine myself with a collection like that, would lurv to purchase it but, yeah dont reckon my bank manager would agree,lol

Steve was with Spyderco for a long time and had a great numbered collection. Krazie, if you are thinking about buying something from him your okay...he's honorable, trustworthy and just an all around nice guy.

On a serious note, I would consider taking out a classified in Blade, or some other well circulated publication. Maybe even Gunlist?

Blade would be a good starting point, as would Tactical Knives. I would stay far, far away from ebay, though. If you put a true price on your wares, no one bids, as they expect wildly underpriced merchandise.

Regarding Balls and eBay: As it turns out, I bought into a company about 6 months ago who's sole revenue comes from buying all kinds of things and listing them on eBay for sale - so... Yes, I've been selling my knives one by one or two by two in some cases under eBay seller names: atticrelics@aol.com and bajahn@concentric.net Some knives have gone well, and others take more time. So far, I've been satisfied with the results and I think that the buyers are also getting good deals - everyone makes out ok that way. Sal and Joyce - Thanks for the Hello and the nice comments - Hello Back from our Family too. I hope everyone there is doing well. Please say hello to Gail, Christina/Dan &amp; Family, to Eric, Peter and the Crew. Every once in a while I find myself checking out the latest at Spyderco either here on the Forum or in the catalogs - and of course, I enjoy receiving the collector knives (still keeping a few favorites like the Micarta Calypso, Carbon Fiber Civs Etc).
