View Full Version : Karambit Wave Modification

Good day to all present.

I recall seeing within the past couple of months a modification done to a Spyderco Karambit to approximate the Emerson "Wave" feature. Not the zip-tie version, thank you; the version whereby the Spydie-hole was actually violated and converted permanently. Does anyone recall where I might have seen this? I basically need a picture to consider doing something very similar to mine.

Many thanks,

I can remember recently seeing something like that with a more "straight up" Spyderco (...maybe an Endura, or something?) but not the Karambit.

Please post pix if you decide to go through with it.

take care...

Good day to all present.

I recall a thread somewhere concerning use of a zip-tie through the Spydie hole as a means to affect a similar opening on the Spyderco Karambit.

I can verify that it is a most satisfactory substitute. :D

This does not negate the possibility of permanent modification to the blade, but makes it more of a delayed eventuality than a immediate necessity.

This WAS an ebay auction for I beleive a modified Endura...unfortuneately the auction listing is no longer available for viewing, but I recall clearly that the Spyderhole had been cut open to form a "wave"...

...which is not to be confused with the genuine article:

Good day to all present.

If in fact Spyderco and Emerson are collaborating on such a design, I can think of no better candidate for the Emerson Wave feature that Spyderco's own Karambit. I am curious as to the possibility of this feature being so added; it would turn my Spyderco Karambit into an EDC in a hurry.

Bet somebody with Photoshop and a pic of the Spydie kerambit could come up with some waving options.

Spyderco has licenced the use of the "Wave" from Emerson to use on an Endura. An image of the prototype is below.

Unfortunately, SelfDefenseForums imploded this past week due to a major disagreement between the owner of the website and the moderators. This may have taken many of those interested in the waved Endura away from the owner, who operates Self Defense Gear - the Company who the exclusive model was to be made for. I hope its manufacture still goes through but this certainly adds a complication.

Hannibal, i would really warn you for that particular modification. I did the same thing with a zip tie on my Karambit. It opened like a dream, but because of the curving of the blade and the fact that it flicked open so fast, the knife already opened inside my pocket! After a few tries with my jeans on i was amazed by the speed it constantly opened. The next day i wore pants with vertical pockets. I decided to speed draw the Karambit, and the blade nicely opened in my pocket and slid thru my pants pocket without even giving any friction. I didn't even noticed it untill my wife said "You cut your new pants !. When you use a "wave" on a knife see that the wave only disengages when the point of the blade is well ABOVE your pocket, because the blade will revolve downwards and will cut everything in it's way. The cuts where dangerously close to my "family jewels", and femoral artery. If i had drawn the knife at that speed on a slightly different angle inwards it would have opened inside the pocket and could easely cut me! I immediate took off the zip tie and send a little thank you upwards because this was only a nearby accident! Please do this Zip Tie modification yourself and try to understand that it is very dangerous on this particular knife, before you do any permanent modification.

:)

I figured that one out already, the hard way, even prior to the modification. Spyder bites are hardly my idea of fun. This alteration requires a bit more care to be sure the knife is completely closed prior to pocket insertion, and also requires an occasional cursory check while in-pocket.

Not the safest mod in the world, I will admit, but I willing to take the chance for the convenience and speed. I would really like to see a stronger closing detent on that particular model, for reasons obvious to anyone who has been bitten by it. :D

I very much appreciate the warning and your concerns; they will not go unheeded.

Off course the zip tie is more pronounced and sticks out on the right side of the blade opening the blade almost automaticaly. It might be that the "waving" of the Karambit has less purchase on the pocket and you have to deliberate turn the blade so it will engage the pocket edge.

I don't like the zip tie anymore. I want to be able to withdraw my :spyder: blade closed and hand it over to someone closed, and open it with two hands. This is just to enhance the sheepleness of the knife. People don't like knives who make sudden unexpected clicking noices, or "magic" blades that appear from nowhere. With the zipped karambit the damn thing always came "battleready" out of my pants even if i DIDN'T want it too! :D

I like to decide myself when the sharpende portion of my knife leaves his nest, and also when it returns there.

A cop walks up to you and asks "hey Mr is that i knife you are carrying"? He puts his hand on his pistol butt and asks " can you please remove it SLOWLY from your pocket with your left hand and put it on the floor?" OK ,NO problem officer here it is , CLICK ! "BANG,BANG"' :(

But i am interrested wether the "waving" of the karambit will make it more controlable to choose to draw it closed or opened.

With the utmost respect. ;)

I have noticed that tendency. Withdrawing it from your pocket without opening it is a trick. :p

Again, true. Thankfully I am in an environment where that trick is appreciated as long as you don't bleed yourself in the process... :p

Obvious control freak. ;)

You apparently don't know the police force around here. It's more of a:
"BANG!" - "STOP OR I'LL SHOOT!" situation. :D

But i am interested wether the "waving" of the karambit will make it more controllable to choose to draw it closed or opened.

I am inclined to agree, which is one of the reasons I would press to see this feature added to the Spyderco Karambit.

With the utmost respect. ;)

You make some excellent points my friend. While I choose that carrying a Karambit with zip tie in place is right for me, it is by no means right for everyone and could in fact be downright dangerous. I respect and appreciate your candor, and hope this exchange might save some other unwary Karambit owner much pain and suffering.

Thank you for your thoughts.
