Hello all, I recently bought a knife with a D2 blade (another brand I won't mention here ;) ) and have had an interesting time sharpening it. I have an old model sharp maker, the 203 I think, which had done everything else I own no sweat. This time though was a different story. This stuff is harder than anything else I have worked with. My final solution was to give up on the gray stones (temporarily) and pull out an old Lansky sharpener and grind at the blade at a very low angle. I took the new profile almost all the way to the edge and then stopped and went back to the sharpmaker and got what i think would be called a double bevel. This edge works quite well now and I am enjoying the edge holding power of d2 steel, now that it has a good edge on it.
Has anyone else here gone through similar ordeals to work with this stuff or have tips (please don't telling me any really obvious shortcuts :p ). I kind of like this metal now in a perverse, masochistic sort of way, and I am looking for more examples of it to add to the always growing collection.

Sounds like D2 is as hard as a good file? I had a knife that I could only sharpen with a good file. I don't know what the steel was but it was really hard. Almost impossible to get sharp.

In my experience, it's best to sharpen D2 on a diamond stone or rod. It is tough stuff and diamonds imho work best. Cheers, Rob

I use the paper wheel system for my D2 Cuda Maxx and all my knives. Still have a deluxe Lansky diamond setup but don't really need it anymore. I will get a Sharpmaker :spyder: system some day to use away from home....

Just reground my Military to a more acute angle and it is like a straight razor now. Seems the D2 sharpens quicker than the S30V using these wheels. (like in a few seconds!)
