Most magazines have about three months lead time. I would imagine that is meant to indicate it is available in June. But who knows. I don't know of it as being available now.

Sheesh, I hope my Blade comes tomorrow so I can drool over the Spyker too.

We are shipping collectors now. Should be shipping regular pieces in a couple of days.

Production is limited to 3,000 pieces. Last I heard, Kelly said about 1200 were sold.

It's a fine piece. Hopefully we've done both Kershaw and Spyderco justice on this one.

This was all the info that was in the press kit - but I haven't checked the other flyer I got during the A'Dam show - will do that when I get home

C96 SpyKer

phosphor bronze washers (!)
blade length - 3 1/2"
weight -4 oz

A pic is on my site

From handling the knife at the A'dam show, I feel the Spyker surely is in the same category of big knives like the Military. To offer my subjective take on the Spyker's size.

Kelly is involved with Spyderco sales, and I think what is meant by the 1200 pieces, is sales to distributors and shops. Not to ELU's like you and me.

Looks like the Spyker is showing up in the online catalog now from the :spyder: home page...Guess that means they must have it in stock at the Factory Outlet store now.

Certainly seems to be the case, but it hasn't shown-up on "What's New" at NGK yet :( .

Wow! Great to see it in the catalog. Pleasant surprise, yet a bit of a shock, considering the Atlantic Salt, Viele Jr, and black bladed C41 Native have not yet been added.

The Spyker looks kinda like a BM Skirmish. What the heck...

The Deacon
04-02-2005, 03:53 PM
Doesn't it though. Think that might have anything to do with the Skirmish looking a awful lot like a number of Ken Onion designs? About the kindest way of putting it would be to say Mr. Blackwood appears to have been very impressed both by the Spyderco round hole and Ken Onion's designs.

Very well put, Deacon. When ever I try to say something like that especially concerning this topic I seem to come across like a Barbarian swinging a big mace :o.

I think Spyderco and Ken Onion made a very smart move and an impressive statement at the same time. Now tell me: Why the heck do they use a liner lock on this one??? I mean, judging by the looks, this isn't exactly a Gentleman's knife, now is it?

I've got mine. It is an interesting piece. It really isn't just a Spyderco.

My only complaint is the size of the Spyker logo.

The PB bushings are very smooth. :D

HoB

Sal said that Kershaw wanted it to have a liner lock. Not sure what their reasoning was.

A liner lock?

A liner lock?

Disappointing. I had read a review that it would have a compression lock.

I was definitely interested. Lots of great features - S30V, ergos, design.

And I am done with liner locks.

Perhaps there will be another issue with a compression lock. :)

Hmm...That does make sense that Kershaw wanted a liner lock. That seems to be their standard. I can't speak for ALL of their models, but every Kershaw folder I've seen has a liner lock.

That is a little disappointing considering that there is another interesting lock choice available that Ken Onion has been using on his customs recently called the "studlock". I don't know much about it since I've only seen pictures, but it looks kind of cool:

http://www.timlara.com/temp/studlock_bump.jpg

Since Ken Onion customs are IMPOSSIBLE to obtain due to demand, I would have liked to have seen Kershaw do a "soft launch" of a new lock on the Spyker model.

Kershaw is a great company, but one of the reasons I prefer Spyderco is that Sal & Co. seem a little more "fearless" about turning loose new ideas even though they might be shunned by purists. I really respect that.

Oh well, I'm sure I'll still pick up a Spyker when I've got the funds! :D

From the pic, it looks like they might be mutually exclusive as it seems to integrate the locking device with a thumbstud opener.

Must just add that my "evil" side would have paid good money to be a fly on the wall during the negotiations between :spyder:, Mr. Onion, and Kershaw. :D

Very good point, Deacon! I hadn't even thought about the fact that there would be no room for the Spyderhole with that "studlock". I'm sure that ruled it out right away. (Although I sort of doubt it was ever even on the table.)

I, too, would've liked to have been a fly on the wall for those design meetings! Sounds like a great idea for a new reality TV show!! :D

I have to admit that the Spyker is one that I've been excited about for quite some time. Mine's not here yet, so no comments until I get it in hand, but I was a bit surprised by the size of the logo that I saw in the pictures.

Kershaw's Ken Onion's are what got me into collecting knives. Then I started with the Spyderco's. This knife was just too much to resist.
Here's another design Ken did for Craftsman. Definetly a big little knife. I'd really like to see a similar Ken / Spyderco collaboration.

Now it's not made from the latest and greatest on the materials side but, I think it's a deal for $25 and my sharpmaker put one heck of an edge on it.

I first couldn't grasp ever using the spyker...still won't adopt the "use" part at the current prices :p But, thanks to this thread, I have a newfound appreciation for the model due to its striking resemblance to other onion models.

Thanks guys, wish the one on ebay didn't shoot up SOOO high so soon---discourages us bidders who shun high prices :D

wish the one on ebay didn't shoot up SOOO high so soon---discourages us bidders who shun high prices :DI'm more surprised they did not all disappear to BIN's as fast as they were posted, considering the MSRP on the SpyKer, and the fact that, with almost anything, one pays more to be an "the first on your block".

Wow as much as I really want to I'm just not feeling the Spyker.

That along with the Dodo are two Spydies that just don't do it for me.

I know I'm in the minority here too. Maybe there's something wrong with me :)
