View Full Version : Do you have a Spyderco shop in where you live?

i WISH THERE was a Spyderco shop in my city where I can go look at all the different models, handle them, open and close them, bond with them a bit:) and buy what I like best.

The pictures on the internet are fine but nothing beats god old fashon shops.

Do you have a shop in where you live?

Living in BFE does have its disadvantages.

The closest shop I am aware of that stocks anything Spyderco is three hours' drive from home. The last time I was there they had two or three models. Scads of Kershaw and Buck. Go figure.

I would love to see a shop close to home, but as it stands now I generally have to order my Spydies sight unseen. I have only been disappointed once, and that had to do with personal preference rather than any deficiency on the part of the knife in question.

Yes -- River's Edge in Columbus, Ohio. Excellent store -- I give them most of my business. They carry a pretty full line of Spydercos as well as other makers -- CRK, Strider, Benchmade, SOG, Kershaw, CRKT, etc. -- and even some customs.

I'm lucky. There's really no substitute for handling and inspecting a knife in person before buying. And if something does happen to go wrong after that, it's a short drive to the store rather than shipping followed by weeks of waiting.

An Endura, two Delica's and a Rescue 93mm(if it was the blue it would not be there :D ) in one shop. A Ladybug in another. One other place that thinks I stole a Snap-it from them(they lost it), they also have a Co-Pilot.
The meat and potatoes are around here but are farily expensive. Take Care!!!

I don't know where to find them in my area either, close I mean. The :spyder: dealer finder only comes up with 3 and the closest about an hour away.

No shops in my area. Rust Belt Region. :( Most stores went broke or moved away. Closest city that may have anything is 2 hours away. Grocery stores do ok in this area along with doctors and nursing home. :(

The best knife shop I know is "The Old Man" in Amsterdam. I live in Leiden and work in Amsterdam just a 45 minutes commute. "TOM" has lots of knives and almost the complete Spyderco range. They do a great job stocking my most favorite knives including many custom made's.
They are not the cheapest but you can get what you see and that is worth something also.

There are several other knife specialist stores but not as close as "TOM". When Sal is in Amsterdam he always visits them and does the pep talk!
Cheers, Jurphaas. :D

There are no Spyderco stores (or specialized knife stores) where I live. The company that imports Spyderco into the Netherlands has plenty of dealers though (hardware stores, gift shops, outdoor stores etc.). Sometimes I spot a Spyderco in one of those stores. Some days ago I visited an outdoor store and they had three Spydercos. Two Delicas (FRN plain, SS serrated) and a SS plain Police. The two Delicas are no longer there cause I bought them;). Usually the knife knowledge of the employees is close to zero. Most of them never heard of Spyderco at all. Maybe some of the Dutch forum members know of any specialized knife stores in Limburg?

I have 6 in my area. Nearest one is about 15 minutes away and the farthest is about an hour.

I guess its a nice benifit living in the Chicagoland area.

But a couple of the shops are really anal about touching/playing with the knives. Their excuse is that you could turn it on them or hurt yourself.

It's actually a bit funny, one of the shops is a gunshop, the guy behind the counter had a .45 on his belt... Do you really think I'd turn the knife on him.

I have several close by. One "paintball" tec store has a great selection and nice prices. An Army/Navy outlet has several at high prices. A couple of gun shops have them but usualy at higher prices.
Then there is this glowing box in front of me...

I'm with Jur on 'the old man'. Back when I could travel on the cheap as a student, I'd travel to Amsterdam all the time. They truly have (almost) everything, and in my day the staff was very knowledgeable.

The cool thing is that the actual knife store is past the ground floor in the back (in the front they sell 'chemistry sets' to drunk tourists ;) , hey it's Amsterdam!), up you go along a rickety stairs and presto, you enter knife heaven.

There's even a little plaque from spyderco rewarding them for excellence in knife sales, or something like that. If you ever visit Amsterdam, let me know and I'll steer you in the right direction.

Not one in the entire country

I had ordered mine from a shop in England. But recently discovered that even after paying import tax, i still save about 40% ordering from USA.

I will agree that it is advisable to handle the knife if the opportunity is there. I just like to read as many reviews and opinions as possible, when i don't have this advantage.

I use the shops around me that carry spyderco to go and touch and feel. They all sell @ MSRP so I usually buy online and save at least 40% including shipping

I go to Beck's Cutlery in Cary, NC. It is a hour's drive. Usually when I go I'll post what I have seen, because she always has something someone here is looking for(Spydiewrench, Starmate, Jot, ATR's, and etc.) If there is something you are looking for drop an email to Patsy at www.beckscutlery.com .

Yes, Merlo's Cutlery in Santa Maria, CA
I met the owner many years ago to discuss obtaining my Collector Spyderco knives thru them as my dealer. The man was rude and did not want to discuss a deal as I would be purchasing knives costing hundreds of dollars/year.
Spyderco Collectors have to take 1 ea knife that is a new model so I do not need (or have the option) to see and feel each one before purchasing. My choice is SFO for my collector models (free shipping and no sales tax).
Other Knife purchases are via the internet, New Graham Knives I am very happy with their service and prices.
However, it is nice to visit knife shops and I do when traveling thru other areas. :)

Sportsman's Warehouse in Coon Rapids (North of Minneapolis) has a good selection of Spydies under $100. I always go right to Mike at NGK for everything else.

I'm lucky I get to work in one of those stores. :)

But the selection isn't that great 20ish items in my store probably 30ish company wide. A few of us keep pushing them to pick up more but the problem we find is that not everyone can put the price and the quality together, and educating customers sometimes just isn't easy.

Cho, which Vancouver knife shop would that be? Vancouver is my favorite holiday city in the world, and I tend to come there at least once a year. I know some of the small knife shops in malls, but they only have 2 or 3 spydies? I'm always hoping to pick up a nice out of production spydie or a Grohmann's flat ground survival model, but alas!

PS great thread idea, something to include in the knowledge base for when we are making holiday plans! :D

I have no knowledge of a real knife shop around where I live let alone a Spyderco shop. Maybe it is better this way because as much as I like handling them I would hate giving them back.
I do have this dream however about finding a shop where the shopkeeper is fed up with some old models he failed to sell and he really wants to get rid of. If I ever happen to find this shop I will surely tell you all when he is sold out. :D

I own a knife shop - I sell Spyderco knives. That doesn't mean I can pick and choose as wholesale costs here are higher than I can buy on the 'net. Still I do get to fondle a lot of Spydies.

House of Knives which is a chain all through out Canada, but the ones in BC are privately own and indepently operated. If you do stop by make sure you go to Metropolis as they have the largest spyderco selection. ;)

after 9-11 the stores sporting / folding tended to dwindle away but about a year ago the company fixed this mistake. We don't have any grohmann's though, they just don't sell as well :( even though they are a great Canadian knife. :)

Hey Greencobra! My very favorite shop is in your backyard. Get yourself down to Sawyer's Cutlery in Hingham. Joe is a great guy.

And Charlie. You mean you can get all your collector knives DIRECTLY from SFO? I thought they had to come from an outside dealer.

I work at the closest dealer in my area. Most Gander Mountains carry a select number of Spyderco knives, and can order any that are currently in production. My store has more than most and im working on increasing my inventory. Most of our knives go for less than msrp. Like a Military 50/50 goes for arround $150. But the majority of stores wont have knives like that. As i said they can be ordered with ease. For thoose in Michigan, check out the Gander in Novi or Flint, they have a pretty good assortment.

There are a few shops close by although none dedicated to knives. Most have the Delica, Endura, Dragonfly, and maybe a jester (all FRN).

After reading this thread I used the ‘Dealer Locator’ and found another one. They had the Delica in FRN as well as SS. They also had the Scorpius, SS Cricket, Impala CE w/gut hook, and the Rescue Jr. Orange (they no longer have the orange Rescue Jr.).

I live in Springfield, Mo and I guess I'm pretty lucky from the sound of this tread. Here are my haunts:

I buy most of my stuff from Steve's Guns. Great prices (just a little above New Graham's). Carries a good selection of Spyderco and Benchmade, but nothing is on display. The shop is small and all the knives are in boxes on a shelf behind the counter.

Bass Pro: lots of knives including William Henry & Benchmade, but no Spyderco

Ozark Gun and Knife: Great display, lots of all brands, but the prices are all MSRP. I'm all for supporting a local shop, but I won't get taken to the cleaners!

A. G Russel: An two hour drive to Springdale, AR. Great selection & the prices are so so.

Gadget Co: In tulsa, Ok at utica sq. Used to be a great place, but haven't been in a while. Last time they seemed to have reduced thier knife invintory.

I'm still looking for a good shop in St.Louis or KC to brouse when I visit. Drop me a line if anyone knows of one.

:) If any of you guys are in the Atlanta area come and see us at Chris Cutlery in Villa Rica, GA. We're in the book. We encourage people to test drive any knife we have. How else are you going to know if its for you?

We have a little bit of everything. We just got in some Spyderco Customs and carry the basic line also. You can spend $3 or $350 on a knife in our store and you'll be treated the same. We do not charge MSRP. We are just 3 guys with a bad knife habit that turned into a store. We're only opened on Saturday and don't try to make a profit, just pay the bills. We also get to play with some great knives (every once in a while we get to keep one) and enjoy talking to other knife nuts.........Ya'll come see us!!!!!

I also express my dismay that there aren't :spyder:s at Bass Pro...I think I can remember a time when I saw a few enduras and delicas there--about 3 years ago.

I live in the Fayetteville/Springdale area and find that it is somewhat oblivious to the quality of spydercos. The nearest authorized dealer has a selection mostly of kiwis and enduras, but all are at substantial prices...its employees were surprisingly dull concerning knowledge of the models. There are a couple of nice outdoor enthusiasts' shops in the area that keep a few models, too--these are usually priced more reasonably. I actually found a little dyad jr for $42 at one ;).

My main source of spydies is from gun & knife shows that we have here in Fayetteville and in Tulsa and in Little Rock...I hope to rent a table at the next opportune time to see if I can get some trades or sales :p I would also like to attend a SHOT show if there are any nearby, but I can get by on ebay I guess...I sure would love to meet other knife knuts who would sympathize with my obsession, though! Most people around here think I'm just waisting my time and money  investing in spydies.

Calgary has a couple of the House of Knives Stores(almost no Spydies) , Cutting Edge which has just about everything Spydie, except the newest. Target Knives (haven't been there on a "Spydie Mission" yet), but they have a lot in a realtively small space, and the Knifery. The Knifery - Spydie pricing is really whacked (high  I think their inventory is from the old exchange rate and they haven't sold or adjusted ). Cutting Edge is a discount place comparatively, but still pretty close to list - some of their other stuff is also quite high. I've only purchased a few things at Target Knives and they were also close to list. Target Knives is the only one that I'm aware of that is not in a shopping mall. There is a Russell Sporting goods here that handles some knives, but they have a very limited selection (can't recall seeing Spydies there, though) - more targeted to hunting, but I did purchase a Kershaw Whirlwind, Grohman mini skinner and a Lansky sharpener there for about 20% less than the other retailers when they had a sale.

I have two sources locally, but I find that buying knives online is a lot cheaper. The distributor is www.ramrod.co.za , and I buy from www.gadgetman.co.za. You will notice that Ramrod appear to hold stock of some of the older models, including both Dyads. I have recently bought the WTC and the Li'l Temp direct from Spyderco, as the locals were unable (or unwilling)to obtain these for me.

p.s. Could someone please tell me how to insert a web link instead of what I have done above? Thanks.

The closest shop that sells Spyderco is about 40 minutes away, and their prices aren't too cheap. The good thing is that they have lots of old discontinued knives that have been on display for a couple years or more. I just wish I had the money to go buy all the discontinued models they have. So far I'll I've picked up is a PE Navigator and a SE SS Rookie. The guy there that sells the knives also gives me around $30 dollars off most of the prices for the older knives. I just have to keep saving up so I can buy all their Spyderco knives. :D

In fact just ordered a Sharpmaker yesterday from Sawyer's.

The latest word from Gadget Co. is no :spyder:s in stock...kershaws and benchmades, though. Sorry, b-elliott...I was gonna check them out today--good thing I called first, the toll road would have sucked more than ever if I had made a dry run.

Another update on Fayetteville's selection: Lewis & Clark Outfitters has a fair selection...but the prices are above msrp I think, though. Some of the main possibilities in town are Uncle Sam's Safari Outfitters, Outdoor America, Ozark Sportsman, and various pawn shops that usually have nil quality. I have not checked 'The Pack Rat' yet, but I bet they might have one or two.

Living near a college town definately has its adavantages :D

jsholli,

Sorry about that. I glad you called first! Pack rat does have a few, but if memory serves prices and selection are about the same as Lewis and Clark. I always hit those stores when I go down to check out camping gear and AG Russel's for knives. I did get a Benchmite from Ozark Sportsman at a good price.

A few years ago I was walking around Utica Sq after visiting the Gaget Co and saw a :spyder: sticker in the window of a furnature (at least I think it was furnature??? Don't remember for sure) shop on the other side of the Square. It was a store that was geared towards women so I was a little embarassed to go in and ask about knives. Well when I did ask, a young lady opened a cubard full of spyderco's (More than the Gaget co had at the time). It was when the C65 - Lum Chinese came out because she had one. Apparently she liked knives and a friend owned the shop and let sell descretely from there. If anyone is near the square they might look around and see if the place is still there, but I suspect she either moved to a different spot or closed up shop because only a trained eye would pick out the logo and then go in and ask ;)

Anyway, happy hunting all!

Very few shops in my area handle Spyderco knives. I don't really worry that much about it, instead researching the knives on the internet.

Here's my take on the "feel" issue...I'll adjust my taste to the knife's "feel" and get used to it. It works for me.
