Hey all,
This past weekend, I picked up a new Spyderco Standard for 30 bucks. I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on the history of this bugger. I have yet to buy the book. Like so many knives, it will have to wait till the summer. Anywho, this is one awesome knife. G10, hefty little blade. Cant be beat.
thanks,
Matt

Great knife. Too bad they have been discontinued.

Matt,
The original Standard was a low cost model introduced in 1984 to forestall knockoffs of the more expensive Clipits. It had an AUS6 blade and thinner stainless handles with a lower level of finishing and the clip was stamped directly out of the scale. Due to its popularity it later received a similar style of handle to the other Clipits but retained the AUS6 blade.
It was discontinued in the mid-1990s but reissued in 1998 with a G10 handle and ATS55 blade. I think the G10 Harpy and Rookie came out about the same time but none of them seem to have found favour with the general knife buying public, although they were very well received by the internet afficianados. All have since been discontinued.
Hope this helps.
Clay
Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow, in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Jazzman, the Standard was my first Spyderco and is still one of my favorites. Now that I think about it I could have stopped buying knives at that point--it's probably the only knife that I need. History will show, however, that many more knives were "needed" after that fatefull day. <img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle> btw, if you can find a G-10 Harpy for a good price, buy that one too.
