View Full Version : Blade flow onto handle...

Hey all,

Just something I've noticed after a short while in the knife world. I tend not to like knives with blades that don't flow nicely onto the handle when closed.

An example would be the Scorpius. When this knife is closed it looks like it's missing something. The blade tang is just all flat and sticking up into the blue.

Now on a Calypso Jr when the knife is closed the blade tang flows smoothly onto the handle. I like this a lot. The Dodo flows nicely also, but the Delica has a flat tang in plain view and I don't like that.

This is not a complaint, just something that I noticed recently that I prefer.

Anyone else have an opinion on this too? How come more handles can't be made to cover the tang when the knife is closed?

:) Thanks,
David

I feel the same way,it just doesn't seem right for a piece of the tang to be sticking out.I do know that the design on some knives will not allow covering it up.

I agree for the visual aspect but it doesn't change the performances of the delica (for example) ;)

just received my Black blade Delica PE and damn, I'll have to order another one for my collection :D

It's the best knife for EDC that I ever saw O_O

I also tend to agree. It just looks nicer :) To design a folding knife, especially a lockback, with this feature is a rather difficult task when you start designing with no templates and just an empty sheet of paper - I experianced this myself  Knowing that, I really appreciate every lockback that comes out having this feature.

Cheers, Rob

I've been wanting to post a thread on this topic for a while but never got to...
I too don't really like a knife that looks "unfinished" when closed... And I also noticed that mostly knives that has a nice curvy finish without any protuberance, also has the famous 50/50 choil... wich I like very much...

But hey, it's function before all... :)

Before the Paramilitary, I too thought it just looks nice. Carrying a Paramillie in the front pocket, made me appreciate how functional it is to hide the tang between those 'shoulders' in the handle, when closed. The exposed tang in a folder, chafes the hand reaching for keys and it can snag in the pocket.

Good point! - I've been EDC'ing my Bob T Jr now for some months and the shape of the handle and flow of the blade when closed is a strong point.
Everything is rounded off, so nothing that catches on keys or clothing. It is very comfortable when clipped, or when just riding loose in the pocket.
And, they've managed to squeezed a lot of edge in a small handle. The pivot is really close to the back, and the tip is just a milimeter in the handle. It's a real beauty in every aspect!

Nice pics as usual Ted. Nice to see you really like that model.

The Bob T doesn't look very ergonomical to me, but I guess I could expect that from a Sebenzanista like yourself! You folks don't seem to care much for handle ergos right (friendly jab)? ;) :D

Wow Ted, I love that knife. Never seen one before.

This blade to handle flow thing is now the exact reason I need to get rid of my 2 Scorpius's. It does indeed snag the crap out of my wrist when trying to get other stuff out of my pocket. I don't feel like dealing with that right now :)

Great replies :)

David

Ted,
I've never had the chance to handle one of those but it does look similar to what I think of as a style which includes hadles like the following:
CQC6/7
Brend (Boker)
Cuda jr.
Crkt Prowler

For me, at a glance these handles look similar (don't know beyond looks). The two of them I have handled were very ergonomic. This leads me to wonder if the Bob T/Jr. are also ergonomic. Am I correct?

ghostrider, I haven't handled any of those, but think the Bob T Jr is much pretty OK. It's not like a Dodo, Manix or Lil Temp, but then again it's a much smaller package. The edges of the aluminum can bite a bit in the hand, probably because I took out the plastic backspacer and replaced it with brass pins. Also, the liner is not really flush with the handle on my particular model but you only feel that when you're gripping it hard and applying a lot of pressure, which is not something I do often. ( I'll grab my Sebenza for that ;) ). More rounded off G-10 or Micarta and a smooth liner would make it near perfect.

Is the C19 still sold anywhere new?

That's a dang nice looking knife. How long is the blade on that thing?

Cheers,
David

edge is 2 5/8", blade is 2 6/8"

very very rare - the most recent PE in mint condition on Ebay sold for $220 - CE is less ($100-$150) but also rare.

sorry... :(

Aloha FoM!

Hmmmmm...what Mr. Blonde said in his first reply! :D That being said, I do not really mind all *that* much about the kick being exposed...

What if ya tip down it? ;)

E me a letter, and God bless

I really don't mind the kicker because Spyder usually raps the end of the handle up higher than the blade to create a finger guard on the cutting side of the blade. My 2 Cents.

This is probably part of the reason the Kiwi, Stretch, "R", Calypso Jr, Native, Schempp Persian, and Manix are among my favorite Spyderco designs.

Ah, the "integration concept" (as described in "The Spyderco Story"). I think Spyderco introduced it at some XP models (which later became the Calypso or the Navigator). Now many knifemakers tend to allign to this trend.
While it is fairly easy to integrate a linerlock or a compression lock, when it comes to lockbacks things are a bit more difficult, due to the constructive nature of the knife. A solution is to put a finger choil but this is a feature that may not appeal to some people. However, a good designer can do even without it (see the Wayne Goddard or the J.D. Smith - now that's what I call knifemaking). :)
