Thought it would be interesting and fun to read how some of you first got hooked on :spyder: knives.

For me: I stopped in a knife shop at a mall and was gazing at all the different makes and models (PE and SE). So I started to test different makes and models with my thumb. I ran my thumb lightly along the blade, and in my mind they just were not sharp. The blade on my multi-tool Buck pocket knife, that I was carrying at the time, to me seemed sharper.

Then I saw this SE knife with a hole in it--how odd I thought. When I picked it up, my thumb gravitated to the hole, and I instantly new why. Then I thought it probably lacks sharpness like the others. I lightly ran my thumb along the blade, and felt it cut the top layer of my skin. I couldn't believe how sharp it was--talk about a psychological jolt. The knife blade read "Spyderco" and the handle read "Delica". Went on to test another make and model, then going back to test the Delica again. I did this back and forth testing for other makes/model knives against the Delica. The clerk was looking at me like I was a nut with OCD. I had a bunch of score marks on my thumb from the Delica. I was finally SOLD. As they say, the rest is history.

I held a friend of mine's SE Worker and also an Executive. I thought it they felt really cool and they were also very ergonomic. A year later I bought my own. A Scorpius. That was my first one, about 6 months ago. ;)

I now have:

1 - Black Salsa CE
1 - Delica SE in G2 with integrated clip
1 - Delica PE in G2 with integrated clip
1 - Delica SS CE in AUS-6
1 - Delica SE in VG-10
1 - Delica PE in VG-10

I remember being attracted by the hole in the blade, even if at that time I didnt know what was its purpose... it was just a cool design.
my first was the police model.

I had 2 prolonged hospital stays last Thanksgiving & Christmas. While recouperating, I went to a knife show where I saw people going nuts over Spydercos. During the long recovery period I remembered that, found this site after typing in Spyderco on my browser, lurked for a long while, then jumped in. So to make a long story short, these people, our SpyderColleagues with all their entheusiasm, got me into this and I enjoy it. Since Jan or Feb I've bought 17 of them.

Fast FWD to now, I'm back in good health and this Spyderco collecting is here to stay.

And a heart felt thanks to all my SpyderFriends, you never knew it but sometimes this board and you got me through some days. Gracias Amigos.

I bought my first Spyderco back in 95 at a gun/knife show here in K.C. It was an old SE stainless handled Mariner. I was so blown away by the superb quality that I immediately went out to look for another one. After that it was a plain edged Police. After that it was a JD Smith. I still have those knives by the way. There are a lot of my Spydercos which are sacred cows so to speak in my collection. After that I got on a Spyderco "plain edged" obsession because at that particular time they were hard to come by around here. The uniqueness of the knives still puts me in a state of "AwhhH!!"

Last September ( about 60 knives ago) I joined this illustrious Forum and the addiction/fanaticism has blown out exponentially. I don't regret a bit of it. Their quality, diversity and fantastic customer service makes them Paramount. ;) :spyder:

:D Read Hannibal, got curious as to what the knives being described looked like. Did a Google search, which led me to a few places, including BladeFourms and the Spyderco website. I have nerve damage in my hands, and realized when I saw the pictures of Spyderco knives that the hole would make opening a lot easier for me. First one I bought was a Herbst. Nice knife, but not really the best choice for a lefty. The one that hooked me was the Native. Was "between hobbies" at the time, so :spyder:s just seemed to start appearing in my mailbox on a regular basis. :o

Finished off a 3 week course with cadets, had money to spend and was gonna buy a decent knife with it instead of the cheap ones(could finally afford more than $40)...

think I asked what they suggested for one hand opening and around $100, ended up with a '98 model pe/frn delica...

5yrs+ later, and too many spydies come and gone, I'm back to looking at slipjoints again. Not much of the current line interests me.

An interest in other ways of self defense then unarmed in combination with a book about folders with pictures of a Q led my to Spyderco and an Endura. Then there were discounted Crickets and Salsas. Then came the Manix for my birthday. At some point my wife suggested looking on eBay and as our money tree is strong and healthy Spydies started to come from around the globe. Around that time I joined this forum and just a few weeks/months later there was the meeting in Amsterdam. I just wish I had more things to cut.

I've carried and used knives since I was a kid. Used slip joints for most of my life. About three years ago I deceided to give this modern knife thing a try, I wanted a knife that was safe and tough to do the job. So I looked to the original, Spyderco, and with the help of people on this forum and a little trial and error have been very happy with the choice. I am still looking for the perfect EDC, my current favorite is the Dodo. Cheers and Hail Odin!! Rob

For many years I got along with only 3 knives, a Buck Stockman and 2 SAK's, an Officer and a Rucksack. That was it for hiking, hunting, fishing, canoeing and EDC. Then I was on vacation in Bar Harbor, Maine (Aug. 2002) and a gift/book shop named Jekyl & Hyde had a rather large selection of Benchmades, Spydercos and others as well as all sorts of cheap knockoffs. The sales guy was into knives and was happy to have the counter full of pieces while I decided it was time buy myself a "good knife". We narrowed it down to a Benchmade or a Spydie and I chose a SS VG-10 CE Police. When I got back from vacation I found this forum (and Bladeforums) and I read about the sale that Smokey Mountain Knife Works was having at the time. Within a couple of weeks I had a Sm. Dyad, Ayoob, Shabaria a Viele, Calypso Jr. and a Navigator. Since then I've gathered up about 70 of the little buggers. Still going.

The Only bad thing about knives is you are always looking for a new one. Even thogh 1 knife actually could do yuo fine for many years. We always look for new ones.

I dont know why.

Cos we are blokes? :D

Good evening, all.

I began collecting Spyderco knives after reading the novel "Hannibal" by Thomas Harris. Lecter went to a gun show and purchased a Harpy, Civilian, and a number of other knives.

I had to have one of each (for obvious reasons) and I got hooked. :D

I have collected hundreds of knives, from custom knifemakers like Harold Corby, Dennis Beaver, and Pat Crawford, to Custom Switchblades from Rob Dalton, to Folders, Skinners, Hunters, Military and Combat Knives, Balisongs, Bowies, in all sizes and shapes from every knife company and country out there. etc. etc. etc. I remember my mom bought my dad some knives for his birthday called spyderco one year back in the 80's. I knew nothing about the company cept that they were made in Japan and were suppose to be decent knives. I never saw the knives only heard about them. I found out after he passed away in 1990 that he never used the knives because they were in his words too pretty. You see my dad use to use and abuse his knives. He would use them as screwdrivers, to stir paint with, to cut metal strappings, to pull nails out of wood...all things that would make a collector like myself cringe. He made crap out of every knife I ever gave him to use. Well after his death I inherited most of his tools and stuff including all his fishing gear, tackle boxes etc. He was a big fisherman. I went through the fishing tackle boxes and they were filled with plastic worms with hooks, lures, flys etc. I'm not a fisherman myself so I had no use for this stuff. I came across a small box that said spyderco, read the side of the box which said lady bug and said no sense opening up this box and get hooked by another barbed fly hook. So there it sat for years. I bought myself some spyderco's a year or two later, a co-pilot, mariner, and love them. One day while giving a friend who loved to fish some of my dad's equiptment, the tackle box turned upside down and the contents spilled onto the garage floor and I noticed a box from spyderco,I said hey wait a minute what's a spyderco doing in here! Written on the side, Delica...a Beautiful Blue SE FRN was inside I looked and saw another box labeled Ladybug with a Red FRN Combo edge, brand new never used. Then I remembered about the special knives mom had bought for him that were too pretty to use. I was hooked after carrying those two knives as I already liked my Co-pilot and Mariner. I gave the blue Delica to my son to carry and I still carry the Red Ladybug everyday to remind me of my dad and the knives that were too pretty to crap up. I now own 38 spyderco's and there is more on the way. Everything else just sits in the safes at home....Doc

Back in the early/mid eighties there weren't any one hand opener knives around. Not in knife stores in my area, anyway. They had something called a Flick-it, something you could add to the blade of a Buck knife that enabled it to be opened with one hand. Or butterfly knives, but they were uncomfortable to carry in a back pocket. So when I saw the Standard at a mall for 20 some bucks, it caught my eye. Flat and fast opening both. Still have it.

I remember the flick-it as it was advertised in biker mags. The way to do a one hand opening these days was to carry your knife tip down in a pouch. Retrieving it by holding the blade only and make a swinging motion. The handle would come around and you could change your grip to the handle. If fact a Spyderdrop with no hole. Worked kinda good as long as your hands weren't slippery. Drinking alot of beer wouldn't make things easyer too. :D
Allright, back on topic then. I found myself wanting another knife for EDC. I knew I wanted one hand opening, a clip, a blade shape for good cutting and easy sharpening, a very good steel, a three inch blade length and it had to be affordable. So I bought a PE Delica FRN. This little thing is so good in every aspect that really counts that the next knifes I'll buy are very likely to be Spypies too.

I was looking for a new EDC and a customer had ordered a Native - I liked the look and feel of it (previously I had always had a "thing" against Spydies) so I researched it and at the same time, when I was making knives, I was interested in S30V and since I read so many good things about the knife I bought one - the first of many. That Native is on "leave" at the moment but will never be sold - it has been replaced by a Paramilitary.

In 1999 or 2000 my boss at work noticed the leathermans I had, and he showed me his PE Alu Cricket. Couple of months later I found one at an outdoor store nearby for about $30, which was a bargain. Then I started collecing crickets, till I only needed the easy to get black FRN ones, then sold them all (except my first) and from there it went on...

Was a butcher for a number of years and had come to appreciate sharp knives. My climbing partner has a couple of vintage :spyder: , an Endura and Delica, and I suffered the misfortune of him showing them to me a couple of years ago. I like collecting things that interest me such as firefighting related items and knives. Since then have been adding a knife here and there to the collection, mostly Spyderco, and soon to be one or two more :) .

I find Spyderco to have very well built knives that are a joy to use. The way that :spyder: takes care of knife users and collectors is classy and much appreciated.

I was 14 and volunteering at a hospital in the ER. This guy got kicked out for cutting the tail off his buddy's hospital bracelet. so we were talking and he showed me the knife, a ladybug on his keychain, and I was enthralled with the design. A couple weeks later I bought my dad an endura, then I bought me one. I'm hooked, he still likes his $2 knives. Sometimes I wonder if my mom and the milkman got together :D :spyder:

Back in the 80's I kept thinking "what's the big deal about those Spydercos? A hole in the blade?! I don't know about that!"

Then one day about 1990 I woke up and thought "OK, I"ll get one of those Spydercos and see what's what"

So, I got a Delica. As soon as I picked it up I thought "OK, NOW I get it!"

And the rest as they say is history :D

I first saw a Spyderco (SE SS Delica) in a SF movie (Screamers). I thought it's a knife especially designed for the movie and I congratualted in my mind the guy responsible with the props for his inspiration. A few years later I found out about Spyderco. The more I learned about them the more I found their philosophy about knives to match mine. So here I am :)

I was involved in knives since ever, since my little childhood. My father has led me towards this hobby.
I first realized some strange knife in a movie called Cliffhanger, I think it was a SE FRN Endura. I liked it on 1st sight.
2nd meeting with spyderco was the Taurus firearms catalogue, where it was a part of the gun scenery, also Endura FRN.
3rd meeting was a french book called World of Knives, where the C01 SS SE was pictured.
After 1 year since then I was a proud owner of a FRN CE Delica in AUS8.
It was in years 1996-1997.
