View Full Version : Question for Sal or someone that knows
Do you have any see through shots of the internal set up of your knives? Something where a guy could see how everything is situated without having to actually take one apart. Specifically for the Delica/Salt knives. I need to see how the part of the knife that holds the spring for the lock is situated before consenting to a 'body rebuild' to replace an FRN handle with titanium liners and new exotic handle scales. When and if I do this I'll need to rebuild the lock holder out of some same thickness ti as the lock bar and blade. But if there isn't enough space on both sides of the lock spring holder I can't possibly do this.
An 'xray' of the insides would be greatly helpful here. Otherwise I may either turn the job down or ruin a knife after seeing that what I intend is not possible. To see what I am talking about or maybe better understand why I'm asking for this see either or both of the links below. A fellow knife lover saw this and has asked me privately if I could do this same kind of 'upgrade' as I did to these Gerbers to his FRN handled Spyderco Delica.
I'm not above cutting a $10 knife open with my band saw to find out because I could eat that and not feel too bad but that isn't the case with the one he wants me to look at doing this to.
Anyway thanks in advance.

Hi DEEB, check out the link Dragn Flame posted, between it and the picture below, you should have a fair idea of how it the leaf spring and the combination backstrap/spring carrier look, since the trusswork of the R makes it pretty close to a "cutaway" drawing. Exact shape will probably differ to some degree, but would guess that once you've removed the blade and lockbar, the spring will come out easily, then you can "split" the backstrap and determine the exact shape.

This is a front-lock which has a similair construction to other Spyderco front-locks.
(The knife in the picture is a BladeTech G-10 Mouse)

I replaced the FRN handles of a Jester with SS liners (with integral bolsters and stag) :) so I think doing the same thing to a Delica should be even easier, since the knife is bigger.

Yes..... Me wants to see too :D
Thanks to all. That is what I needed. DragnFlame and Ted your pics helped a bunch. I have one of those Qs and didn't think the insides of it would be much for what I needed in the back spacer/spring holder. That was my main concern for the lock back. Thanks again.

I'd love too, but unfortunately I no longer have it. I sent it to a close friend. This happened long before I had a camera, so I didn't took any shots :(
I'll show you the next one (it takes only to find a spare :spyder: for sacrifice...) ;)
Very nice picture,Ted! It's also interesting to see how a non Spyderco locks up. I believe in a Spyderco the portion of the lockbar that engages in the notch in the tang looks a lot more "kinked" leaving a lot more "unfilled space".
At least that is the way my Manix is made and I have seen a similar picture on bladeforums.

No prob, Alex! I guess your friend was very happy!
I will keep you fingers for the next one :)
Well, actually I have decided to practice on my Salt 1. It will be upgraded with a new titanium liner body and exotic handle scales of Lignum Vitae.
Lignum is the heaviest, strongest and most dense wood in the world. (80 plus pounds per cubic foot. That is like twice the weight of oak or hickory) Needless to say it is a very durable wood that has been used extensively in marine environments. They used it for drive shafts for boats for many years as well as bushings because of it's self lubricating ability. The natural resins in the wood make it immune to acids and chemicals as well as water so it was used in flooring and for numerous other applications in sail boats. (pully wheels, wooden mallets, cutlery handles etc) and it never dries out, is resistant to cracking, splitting, chipping and rotting. Lignum is also non contaminating so it can be used in food prep easily as well.
Over all it has the same basic resistance to 'decay' as the H1 steel so I thought it was a viable candidate for the handle material of such a durable knife steel.
I have the pattern drawn for the new handle. My intention is to make some minor improvements as I see it but keep the basic shape and size.
Stay tuned. I'll post pics when done. Both here and on my web site.

You got me interested DEEB, it sounds like a nice project to me. I'm awaiting the pictures of your work in progress and off course the finished knife. This can be a real classy folder.
I'm going to be posting this project in it's own new thread for everyone to see. It is coming along nicely.
You've heard of Salt and Pepper? Well this is Salt and Rice right here. http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?p=145057#post145057
