I recently became the proud owner of a Scorpius in PE. It is billed as a tactical/utility folder. For me, it is not a useful tactical folder. THe handle is not secure enough, both in design, material and the lack of gripping serrations for the thumb. Also, the tail didn't work for me when using the closed folder as an impact tool. The tail angles away from my preferred centerline of the hand (like you would have with a straight palm stick), and my XL-sized hand leaves too little of the tail exposed from my hand.
The scorpius as a utility folder, wow, that's another story. It's comfy to operate thanks to the large hole and signature Eric Glesser design tail. The tail BTW proved to be an excellent anchor to secure the knife in the hand while shifting from one grip to the other, in utility chores. The handle is totally dehorned, no sharp edges or hotspots. Much more so than on an SS dragonfly or SS Calypso jr. It's a very comfy knife to use for hours on end. Also the blade appeared to be just an effective cutter as a Calypso jr. lightweight, with less binding experienced on the usual mediums of meat and cheese during food prep.
Just as important, the blade is beautiful! Great lines! And useful too, the deep belly and 50/50 choil helps to cut with ease on a cutting board. That way, the tip doesn't dull as fast.
For comfort's sake, I would like to see the handle relieved to allow 100% access to the opening hole, it would be better for left-handed access to the hole.
Eric and the engineering crew worked their magic in weight distribution too. Like with the Manix, this folder is heavy on paper, but not in the waistband or the hand.
In all, a very versatile and sharp utility folder. I would love to see a lefty-only variation, no extra holes, that would look ugly on this cool looking folder.
More ramblings and pics can be found on my website (http://www.geocities.com/mrblonde50/review_scorpius_pe.htm).
Cheers,
Wouter
