View Full Version : A Silly Idea?

I recently bought a plain edge small Utility knife, mainly to keep my wife away from my Santoku. Instead I've found it to be my second favourite kitchen knife, well nothing could replace the Santoku . Anyway I was thinking what a great little knife it would be to take camping. All my bushwalking and ski touring is low impact so I have no need for a heavy duty camp knife but I do need a knife mainly for food preparation. For as long as I've been hanging around these forums (too long, just ask my wife) I've heard people sing the praises of A.G.Russell's Deer Hunter with it's super thin blade. So my silly idea is, how about making a kydex sheath available for the small Utility knife for those of us who need a light food preparation knife for camping and picnics. Come to think of it, the Mini-Paring knife would make a wicked little neck knife. I think I better stop before this gets completely out of hand .

Clay,
I don't think that's a silly idea. That's a great idea!
My serrated small utility goes with me on all camping and rafting trips and is probably the one knife that everyone wants to borrow come time to prep dinner.
I would love to have a better system to carry it with. Currently I'm using the cardboard sleeve that it came with, with several wraps of duct tape around it.

Keep ideas like that coming.

P.S. I don't carry the knife on my belt that way. It is in the "kitchen" box.

Clay,

Great idea! I've been thinking of a gift for my hiker-dude bro-in-law, and also thought (dreamed?) of sheaths for my Spyderco kitchen knives. This would not just make them handy for hiking/camping but would make them great for travel knives and picnic situations.

Cold Steel's got a kydex sheath for the Hai Hocho and sleeves for their kitchen knives.
Lynn Thompson may have the "Yes Knife" but I think a Spyderco version would be "Ichiban" (Number One)!

Eric Noldechoen -- Normark -- and Mike Sastre -- River City Sheaths -- are very highly regarded Kydex/Concealex sheath makers. They have many common knives, so don't need yours for making the sheath. Something as "unusual" as a kitchen knife might require your sending them your knife.

I don't have either URL handy. Both post frequently on the Review forum and the General forum at Blade Forums.

Yes, I have a couple of Mike's neck sheaths and rate them very highly indeed. Trouble is, I don't think I could live without my little knife long enough to send it to him for a sheath. SFO (amongst others) are stocking a selection of Mike's neck sheaths and I was hoping that, if this idea takes off, they might also stock a few sheaths for the kitchen knives.

Hi Clay. We made injection molded sheaths for both utilities (K04 & K05) back in the mid '80's. They became a problem in cost (most people threw them away) and we had some quality issues.

We're planning on upgrading the kitchen knives in the next year. One for travelling, camping, picnics, etc. is one for consideration.

Thanks Sal, looks like it's not such a silly idea after all . I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with for travelling etc. My vote would go to a smaller Santoku style blade. Something like Cold Steel's Hai-Hocho but without the serrations. A.G. Russell is on the right track with his folding Hocho but I think it is too expensive for the occasional use it would see (at least in my hands ).
