View Full Version : Broke my yojimbo - pics (ugly)!
:(
I broke my beloved Yojimbo today - BUT, it was my fault. I was working with it on a ladder and, you guessed it, it fell. Landed tip first into vinyl tile covering concrete. So, considering it fell 5 or so feet, full on, tip in, not too bad. The edge would still be useful if need be. However, I won't be regrinding this one - I'll have to get me a new Yo. Are there any major improvements in the works that I should wait for? Just checking.
What makes this even more saddening is all the tinkering that went into this one:
1) improved detente - it stayed closed tightly
2) pivot screw holding end instead of that tube thing - stronger
3) matte clip - I like it better
Pics (as promised):

that sucks!!! :(
That is probably not something covered under warranty but it could be brought back to a point. I've fixed worse lets put it that way.
If you want some help with the how to on that feel free to contact me.

some blades like the MIlitary they can fix, i dont think you can reprofile this.
I could regrind, either from the apex or after, but I would just rather get a new one - the blade is shortish to start, no need to make it super stubby.

RLR:
better send her my way... I'll have to do some lifesaving efforts on it, or give it a proper burial... PM me for shipping details.
Not a problem. To do so without taking out any of the lettering the angle will need to be slightly altered. If the lettering means little to you the same angle can be kept but personally I think it will look better doing it as follows.
Just follow the line I've drawn here using either a grinding wheel or a a belt sander. (later preferred because it is less heat that way.) Keep a cup of cold water handy and do this with your bare hands so you can feel the blade where you are grinding frequently. Never let it get more than luke warm to the touch. Dip it frequently and take your dear sweet time making the changes. Just remember. "Baby steps".
Physically draw this line on the blade and follow it until done. Finish the edge with a fine belt of something like 1000 grit. 400 well worn will most likely work also. A cratex wheel is what I use but if you don't have any you will have to make due with sand paper. The rough edge that develops can be taken off with one of your super fine diamond sharpeners but support the blade and tape off what you don't want to scrape first then swipe the pad over the edges.
Doing it like this you lose nothing other than what is already lost. The edge will remain as will the sharpness you already had and the edge profile.

Thanks - That's how I would do it, if I were to. I instead blunted the tip - screwdriver - and put it in the toolbox. I now have a great carpet cutter and staple puller. Believe it or not, it'll come in quite handy. Now I just have an excuse to buy a new one and tinker even more better
Looks a bit thin to rely on it as a screwdriver and with S30Vs rep for not taking lateral pressures too great I'd probably be wary of using it for that. Overall it only looks like you lost an eighth of an inch max. Certainly fixable.
What about putting a tanto point on it, looks like now would be a good time, just a thought and it would be a one of a kind yojimbo

I'll take it!! Heck I'll even send you a screwdriver, carpet cutter and staple puller. :D Sorry for the loss, good thing the only thing that fell off of the ladder was the knife. Cheers.

Good ideas all - and ideas I've used at one time or another in the past. But, I LOVE the Yo and I'll get another. This one's still good and still gonna be used.
As for "screwdriver" let me correct and say that's its only to pull out those darn staples in flooring, etc. I know the S30V won't torque.
Sorry to hear. The Yojimbo has been my constant companion since Christmas. Glad to hear you can still use it for some things. Hope you find a new one soon in your pocket:) Take Care!!!
Hi RLR,
We can probably put another blade in it.
sal
That is a generous offer Sal, and you've always taken care of me. But, in this case, I've tweaked and retweaked the guts - liners, stop pin, blade detente. I don't think reblading would work, and I've got my line on a new Yo anyway. It's a great toolbox tool now, and I'm more than happy to keep contributing to Spyderco's success.
Hey, I dropped the knife, nothing more nothing less. This one's all on me.
Again, thanks and cheers - RLR

Wow, RLR that stinks.
You still gonna keep it? Seems that you could still make a real good knife out of it by doing something to the tip.
You could still buy another one and have 2 then :D
Cheers,
David
