Today I have received my new Manix but I'm a little disappointed. In some spots I think there is rust. What do you think about it?

I'm not an expert but from the pics, could it be congealed lube? I would call the factory or where you bought it from to tell them, if a noble attempt didn't remove it to my satisfaction. It is after all, a "new" perchase. Someone WILL help you though.

Whoa, just saw you're in Italy. I hope you bought it there! Sending it back to the States could be a monster delay.

First picture: perhaps. Prolly some oil/grease/...
Second pic: where ???
Third pic: very unsharp, could as well be a copper part in there.

Like greencobra said, just some lube or something. Otherwise: all metal will rust eventually. Your knife may have been stored in a moist environment. And that's not Spyderco's fault. Cleaning it up won't take you more than five minutes, so no harm done in any case.

Good day, all.

I have also seen some knife parts change color a bit when heat-treated if there is no way to polish it all out. If it does not get any worse in a couple of days that might be the problem, which really isn't one AFAIC.

I's a complicated situation.
In Italy this knife costs 260 USD (an insane price!) so i have bought it on ebay (as all my Spyderco knives). I'll try to inform the seller, but it would be hard to do a substitution.

dani, did you try to get it off? If it won't come off, at the very least shoot an e-mail to customer service. I'm with you on this. I too want my new stuff looking new when I get it, although some folks on the forums will give you a fight for nit picking.

Golden will take good care of you, not to worry my friend.

And include that 1st photo in your e-mail.

It does turn copper colour for some reason - all my S30V spyders do. Just polish the hole with 600-800 grit automotive wet sandpaper and it's good to go. As for the rest, it's just discolouration - don't worry about it and beat up your Manix.

Cheers - RLR

Hello Dani,

I think it is nothing serious, looks to me like Hannibal said, heat treament, etc.
Try to use some WD-40, maybe your "rust" will disappear then.
Otherwise I think there is no need to send the knife anywhere.
Enjoy your manix!
Regards,
J.

@ Zwaplat

In the second and third image (sorry for bad quality) steel has a strange color, verging on reddish.

@ Hannibal Lecter

What does it mean: "AFAIC"? Sorry, but my English sucks... I have neglected it for a long time.

@ greencobra

Thanks for the support. I don't think to send it to the USA, there are too much problems about the shipping (money, losses, customs...).
Because of very high prices in my country I have to buy in the USA in spite of risks.

@ all the others

Ok, I'll try to polish the spots in question. Thanks for the explanations and advices.

However the Manix is a great knife!

P.S. Please be patient with my English, I need much time to read and write... Sorry also if there are some errors. :(

Buying this on ebay, this sort of thing might not be covered under warrenty. Like Zwaplat said "it's not Spyderco's fault" if it's been improperly stored.

Good day.

Sorry - I rarely use abbreviations like that due to this problem. It stands for "As Far As I'm Concerned." My apologies for including something in my post that obscured the meaning.

Basically, I have noticed the exact same discoloration on several of my Spyderco S30V knives. At first I was worried about it, but it does not spread or affect the function or reliability of the knife. It is also normally found in unusual places (inside the Spyder-hole, etc.) so for me it isn't an issue.

I hope this information helps!

Some of my Spydies are discoloured in the opening hole. Many are users and the sweat from your thumb makes them rust easy. Might have to do with the hole not being finished as the rest of the blade. A little lube and you should be ready to go. Buying off ebay...there is always a risk. Take Care!!!

it's not rust, I got the exact same thing on every S30V/G10 spydies I own. my guess is it's only a light coating or residue of oil from the hole drilling process or the machining of pieces like the lock or backspacer.
everyting's normal on your knife Dani! :)

I have a Military and Chinook II that have/ had the same spots. It doesn't effect the knives in the least. Looking at your pictures......you need to put some lubricant in there! The lube will protect the steel, stop the rust (IF it is rust...I don't think it is) and make the action smooooth!
Enjoy your new knife and don't sweat the colorization.

Well, everything seems to be ok.

I was a little worried about it, because I've never seen these strange spots on my others Spyderco knives (Military, Delica, Navigator, Centofante III, Police).

Thank you very much! This forum is great! :)

My S30V gunting has the same copperish look to it in certain places. In the groves on both sides of the ramp and in the square notch beside the grind backhind side of the knife, or the one with Spyderco written on it.

It has been there for probably close to year now if not more and has not caused any problems. The only thing your has which mine doesn't is the globs in the first pic.

I agree, all my S30V knives have the reddish / copper color in unfinished areas like the hole, in the lock, and even in the roots of thumb grooves. I assume it is from laser cutting?? Don't worry though, so far it hasn't spread!

On the contrary my Military is "perfect"...

I'd like to jump back in for a minute if I may and ask,

In the laser cutting process, is a cutting lubricant used?

HoB

Thats not rust, thats the natural finish after the laser cutting. Is most pronounced on the S30V blades.

The Deacon

HoB is correct, the color is merely an artifact of the laser cutting process, and S30V seems to "color up" more than most at those locations. It's a trade off, and Spyderco decided that the time and materials needed to remove something that is totally harmless, and is confined to areas not normally visible, would add more to the cost without actually improving the knives.
Sal also has stated that, in the case of the thumb hole, he feels the slightly rough finish left by the laser is good thing, as it provides additional traction, making it less likely for ones finger to slip from the hole.

The dealer video does show some liquid being directed on the cut. Believe it is just use water to keep things cool, as the metal it is being "burned", not cut with a tool.

My Manix has this on the lock lever also. I am not concerned about it, the knife is not effected by it. If you are, just take it apart, and polish it up. That is the beauty of a take apart knife. When done, put some Militec-1 on the bearing parts, hit them with a hair dryer. You will have a smooth piece.

Yeah, my Manix has the color too, in the hole and the top of the choil. I thought it might be rust, but WD40 did nothing so I just figured it had to be just the color of the metal in places. Glad to find out I was right! :)
