The politics of ooooooh feeeeeeling good...Damn, I cannot remember the group who sang this one! :p

Okay, I was thinking the other night about the :spyder: Fly. I am wondering, "Is it only good for "the Dance"? Legally, I cannot carry mine around, and the beadblasted handles mixed with my body chemistry equate to rust :( , so mine will stay in my GawkBox.

However, my question..."Is it only good for doing "the Dance"? I don't think so. Now, I can carry one around my property and use it should the need arise. I mean, think about it...no way for it to close on my hand, very easy to clean, provides a lot more reach than my Caly' Jr. beater...I have read a lot about doin' "The Dance" with this one, but nothing on USE. As mentioned, use is limited in a lot of areas like mine, so that could be why. Also, why not just use a folder or FB right? Well, the Balisong has stood the test of time as a using knife. So I been wondering how well this :spyder: Fly can WORK as well as Dance? Edge geometry? Cutting ability? Ergonomics during USE? Will the handles work loose, etc...

After all, it was not built just for dancing, was it?

Thoughts?

God bless and thanks for reading

Chad, to a great exent I agree. BUT, unlike a Caly Jr, Rescue or Civilian, the motion of opening any bali is not "intuitive". I would think that, unless you practice to some degree, and do it regularly, a bali's usefulness in the field would be limited to those situations were speed of deployment is not of the essence. Or perhaps this "old dog" just has a harder time learning new tricks.

Hi Paul!
Well, remember now, I was a child of the 80's and that's when balisongs or "butterfly" knives were more or less at their peak! I can open a bali oddly enough, faster than some of my folders!

You are correct in that I am not talking ANYTHING about deployment speed...just sheer USE in the "field"!

Er...now who's this "old dog" you're talking about?

God bless ya KnifeBro

I'm a child of the 60's. They were hot then when I was in high school. The appeal has never really left. At that time, we'd go after school to a surplus guy near school to buy Balisongs and those cheap Itialian stelletto switch blades. Both very legal at the time.

I often wonder what happened to the probably hundreds that were taken away from us in school by our teachers each year.

Aloha GC!

Wow...they were popular in the 60's? I know switchblades, but not bali's. Cool! ;)

God bless you my friend

Chad, not to drone on here, but I went to private H.S. where we had all kinds of kids. One I remember, a sterotype of every Italian kid you ever heard of, named Rico (no kidding) pointed toe shoes, cuban heels, greased back hair, black suit jacket, white shirt, and black string tie. I'm not making that up. I can still hear the noise he made dancing his balisong in the back of math class. clink, clink, clack, clink, clank.

I crossed him one day and he cut my tie off with his knife. His dad was a FBI agent I remember. Don't know what career path he chose though.

Hi GC,

I went to a private High School for awhile. It was then that I got into the most fights due to other guys misinterpreting my uniform as advertising that I was some rich kid. Private school freaked me out though...remember St. Louis High School?

About that italian...recall the last name? SimonG, JimD, or myself can check our rosters...he may be in our place of employ right now! ;)

Still wondering IF I should invest in another :spyder: Fly for USE...not just to dance...

God bless

I really haven't tried submerging any of my :spyder: 's in sweat, but I've let all of them soak at least 48 hours in break free CLP and they don't seem to rust at all. I use them at the lake and they get submerged at times. I have a mili and a delica.

The Balisong is a very interesting fighting knife. Many believe the skill is to open and close the knife in rapid motions...This is all well and good if you just want to impress your friends...the real skill is how to deploy the knife in the motions of the various sets and strikes in the FMA- Arnis De Mano. The key is that your opponent should never see the blade, the fancy openings is not used to intimidate your opponent, so that he has time to pull his own weapon while watching your fancy skills. For instance in a belly jab, Sak Sak Technique the Balisong is thrusted at your opponents belly but the blade will never be seen as the opening will occur when the knife is at contact distance, in other words just enough distance of the blade lenght to the body, during the thrust. To accomplish such feats takes much practice, and a deep understanding of the methods involved in Filipino Martial Arts...Doc

Aloha skcusloa!

Yeah, I think it's just *me* and beadblast...we equate to rust! Ya shoulda seen what used to happen to the liners on my CRKT knives!

Aloha Dr. Snubnose!
I hear ya sir. I can usually draw and open my bali in a reverse grip w/o anyone knowing that I even opened it. (I'm not talking about doing that Ice pick latch drop either.) Yes, i like to do the "Dance", but right now, i am wondering on the USE of this :spyder: Fly...Mahalo for your wisdom!!!

God bless you guys!

I was probably the only kid on the primary school with a knife in pants, we had no clip in that time, so pocket carry or a belt pouch :D

Daywalker, I carried balisongs for many years...all types...many different blade designs...all worked well for everyday chores...I have a :spyder: Fly coming to me this Thursday I hope... A couple of months back a student of mine handed me one to play with for the day... I found it difficult to open cleanly and it bit me badly in the first 5 minutes of use...The design of the large (I call em ears) tops of the handle was something I wasn't use to since I've been playing with the traditional style balisongs for some 30 years now. But since it's a spyderco I decided to give it a try again and spend some time and practice with it to see what happens. I can tell you this though, it's built like a little tank and I was especially impressed with the pop open latch system that occurs when you squeeze the handle together...super nice feature...I will let you know more when I play with it...but for now I'd say it would make fine field knife and the construction of the knife is Spyderco Strong so I don't think ya have to worry bout the handle loosening up anytime soon...Doc

Aloha Dr.Snubnose,

Yes, I had the same problem initially when I got my :spyder: Fly. The "ears" as you call them, also threw off the balance that I was used to when "Dancing". Instead of "Breakdancing" with the :spyder: Fly, it felt like I was doing a Waltz! :p It has a "lopping" type of feel to it when flipping and twirling, doesn't it? BUT, like you...I practiced with it.

I agree with you on the spring latch! Instead of hitting my thigh to open, or thumb popping it like the "old days", like a trigger of a gun, or when applying juji...just squeeeeeze ;)

Again, thanks for the insight and God bless

Hi Chad,

The grinds are not as slicer friendly as on a Caly, but since it's a spydie it should work great as a user blade. To me, the 2 biggest utility advantages of the bali, are the lock and it's generally a very slim package to carry.

As soon as the mini-fly were to hit dealers, there will be one in my left-hand pocket, at least to try it out for daily use.
