Hello. I am a longtime lurker with a question that I can't seem to get answered by searching the archives.

I love the G-10 Serrated Harpy I have clipped into my right pocket, but I think that some cutting tasks would be served better by a plain edged spear/drop point blade. Are there any left hand carry G-10 plain edge knives that are or have been avialable from Spyderco? I would be interested in anything Navigator sized or bigger.

I forgot to mention that I have an irrational fear of linerlocks and would much prefer a lockback design.

HI & welcome. I'm a lefty also so I find the spyderco line to be "friendly" to my needs. As a lefty
I find that I have an advantage of not having the clip dig in my palm when the clip is right hand
oriented. So relax , the entire spyderco line is useful to us lefties. Check out the spyderco web site
for all the "goodies" that you can buy. As a personal favorite I'd recommend the Calypso Jr lwt.
with it's amazing vg-10 blade. It's a darn good place to start. (and finish :&gt<img src="wink.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>) )
Enjoy!!!!

I agree that almost any of the knives will open just as easily left handed, but I was hoping for a knife that allows the clip to be oriented for 'proper' left side carry. I would like to avoid having to awkwardly spin the knife around for a left hand only openning.

OK....that's easy. The calypso jr lwt. ,native, large FRN goddard, rescue, maybe one or two more.
Any one of these will do a good job for you. I don't mean to beat the drum ,but give the little calypso
a try. If it's self -defense you're looking for this knife cuts FAST and DEEP in flash. While still being
small enough to use for other uses. The native is also a nice knife or the goddard. All good choices.

this is intresting i frequenlly carry my harpy in my back left pocket for left hand use, expealy if i carry another spyderco in my front right pocket. i was thinking about taping the other side of the knife and moving the clip so that it could sit that way for ease of opening. you could do the same thing, to any knife you like. i don't know maybe the repair dept can make this modification for a fee if you send it to them that would be nice.

&quot;taping the other side of the knife and moving the clip so that it could sit that way for ease of opening.&quot;

On my G-10 Harpy, the metal liner is only on the side of the blade that has the clip. If you attempt to tap the other side, there would only be G-10 to hold the threads. I don't know how strong such an arrangement would be.

I'd say get a Merlin, which has a reversible clip. The blade is almost identical to the Harpy's, though the handle is FRN/Zytel (which I find perfectly fine BTW).
As a southpaw, that'd be my choice.

eeyor -- mine has stainless steel handles you have a very good point i don't think you would whant to tap G-10. but you might want to check.

If there aren't any Spyderco knives with left handed (or reversible) clips and G-10 scales around a plain edged blade, what other brands of knives can you recommend? I know Benchmade makes several Axis Lock models that fit this description, but they just don't seem as elegant as the Spydie lockbacks.

eeyor...Forgive me if I beat the drum ,but please re-read my earlier post on this topic. The knives
I mentioned are all left hand when the clip is reversed. They all can be had in plain edges and all
are very good choices. What they are not is G-10 handled. They all are FRN which costs less
which makes them more expendable should you lose one. The money is in the blade where the
work is. As a lefty I offer that with spyderco the clip is really not that important. ANY knife
that spyderco makes is friendly to BOTH hands. Good Luck!

tightwad,

I will look into those knives, but I was hoping that I could meet all of my requirements with one knife. I have an FRN handled Dragonfly (also serrated) that has certainly been beat on for the last five years or so and stood up well, but I really prefer the feel of the G-10. I am not trying to belittle the FRN handled knives, because I know they are excellent products.

Sal,

Thank you for the welcome. Can you tell me if there has ever been a G-10 lockback (actually non-linerlock) plain blade Spyderco with a left hand or reversible clip? I know I'm frustrating Tightwad, but the FRN handles just don't attract me as much as the G-10.

Let me also say that I am quite impressed that you take the time to interact with your customers on two message boards (I hang out at BladeForums also). That dedication is a big reason why I don't really want to find a different brand of knife.

Hi Matt, thanx for the kind words. I must admit that sometimes time is tight, but I believe the ELU is the most important part of the business chain.

re; your request, no. I canot think of a single G10 left hand (non linerlock) knife that we have made to date. We probably will in the future, but for now, you'll probably have to chase down another brand. good luck.

i have an idea what if you has tim wegner custom a G-10 mouse clip taped on the other side, i don't know the size vs. the navigator but it seems like tim is down for the left handers you could order a full size wegner lefty liner lock but i know you don't like the liner locks. go to blade-tech.com and see if you could ge a G-10 mouse i'm sure it will be unique.
