This may be a stupid question to those of you in the know.

I want a spydaco spydawrench. I became interested in them just as they were discontinued. I know I can buy them on EBAY for too much money. What I really want to know is: 1. Will they ever be manufactured again? 2. Why were they discontinued to start with?

What a great design.

thx in advance,
wayster

First of all you had better resign yourself to the fact that you are not going to get a new Spyderench for bargain basement prices unless you are extremely lucky. Actually Ebay is where I would personally tell you where to go to find one. You might try to get on Bladeforums.com to see if someone has one for trade. I have 2 of them and would not part with either one. In about another 2 years or so they will be in a super collectible mode. You might also try the GOOGLE search engine. Some people have told me about some of the most wonderful things that they have found there. GOOD LUCK :)

when a model gets discontinued, it's usually because the sales were not what Spyderco had hoped. For the SpydeRench I was particularly bumed because a lot of though went into the design and it was a good tool, just needed a bit more time to catch more press. They decided to concentrate on other new models if their line-up. I'd buy one too but as a personnal rule, I wouldn't use too hard a dicod model, so I'm not sure it would be a good investment...other than for collection purpose.

If it's any comfort to you, I asked a question about it last year and Sal replied they hoped to bring the design idea in the future. If it does come out, we don't know when or what it would be like but that's something to look forward to.

Like JD said, it's not a good time to buy one cause the price are going up but chances are it's as good as it will ever be so you'll have to bite the bullet. Ebay is a good place to start looking.

take care

From what I've seen, it doesn't appear user friendly. The new version, if there is going to be one, is going to have to offer something special to compete with the existing products already on the market.

I use mine a lot, it's pretty handy and well thought out. I love the little knife on it. You might try bidding on the auctions that end on the weekday, the weekend ones draw a lot of attention (and bids). It's definitely worth picking up.

Sal's comments on the SpydeRench would indicate he has not given up on it totally. He has repeated said it really was not "retired", just withdrawn from production to deal with some unspecified issues and will return. On the other hand, with all the new stuff in the pipeline and on the drawing board, I doubt if getting the 'Rench back into the lineup is top priority.

Thus, unless you're prepared for a really long wait, I will join JD, Dean, and Dave in advising you to try for the best deal you can get on eBay, BladeForums, and KnifeForums.
