once upon a time, i had a blue lum chinese... a user that i carried and adored. bought it used for $60... later i sold it for CONSIDERABLY more, figuring i could always buy a green one as a user later. my fingers are color blind, you know... :D
anyway -- i never got around to replacing that little knife, and now i REALLY find myself missing it. whenever anyone asked me why on earth i collected knives, i'd show them my lum chinese... let them hold it... it NEVER once failed to impress a non-knife-person and convince them that knives were true works of art, just like paintings and sculptures. even impressed a friend of mine who is an art historian -- a female art historian, at that. before seeing the lum chinese, she told me all knives were "ugly weapons." after seeing it, she said she wanted a knife of her own. (!!!!!!).
i really wish spyderco would bring the lum chinese back... i don't know if it would be possible to retain all the elegence of the knife while making it more cost effective (and therefore more accessible and possibly more lucrative...), but it DEFINITELY seems worth the effort.

Well the sprint run Walker seem to show that nicely finished almite handled knives can be produced at a reasonable price. The upcoming R2 I am sure will bear that out as well. So, perhaps a sprint run of the Chinese Folder, with the original materials, but perhaps in dark red or dark coppery orange almite to avoid confusion with the older ones, might pique the interest of both users and collectors.

The Chinese Lum and the blue Walker are completely different knives IMO except for the obvious similarities in steel, handle and lock. The shape, the size and the feel are too different for me to be able to really compare them.

i was just wondering... how does the new blue walker compare with the lum chinese...? anyone have any thoughts? If you are talking how they compare from a quality / fit & finish standpoint, I would say very well. Both are well made and well finished. The Lum goes back to the era when Spyderco was still smoothing the inside of the thumb hole and chamfering its edge, some will consider that a plus, some a minus. That's the only real f&f difference that I could notice. Both operate smoothly if you are right handed, the Lum is about as lefty friendly as a liner lock gets, with about 90% or more of the hole exposed on the "off" side, while the Walker has only about 50% exposed. Beyond that, it's a matter of taste. I think the Chinese Folder is one of the three best looking :spyder:s ever, perhaps THE best looking, and think the Walker is downright homely. Others, of course, may see things differently.
So the Lum Chinese came in Green and Blue? Was everything else the same?
Such a beautiful knife, I hope to pick one up someday soon.

Such a beautiful knife, I hope to pick one up someday soon.Moon, the blue version was only available in PE, while the green came in both plain and serrated. Other than that, same specs and materials. The plum colored one posted by Chinook is, IIRC, one of only a handful made in that color.

Thanks Paul.
Hopefully I can come across a PE version some time soon.

If we are lucky, we might have a Chinese Folder sprint run for 2006.
Please, please, please Spyderco!!
We were discussing it on Bladeforums, Mr. Glesser said they hadn't decided yet on a knife.... Chinese Folder?? Maybe!! If there is enough interest.
:)
