View Full Version : A new campstove and American Pancakes
Went to the camp store today to get a new campstove. The current one (MSR Dragonfly) makes (way) too much noise, and 2 pits is more practical since we now have a family of four.
I got the Coleman 2 Burner Dual Fuel™ Stove
Of course I needed to try it out for dinner, and decided to make american pancakes.
I couldn't find a prefab mix in the store, so searched for a recipe.
And what a recipe I found. It worked so well I had to share it here. :)
(Allthough there is a slight chance you all know how to make american pancakes...) ;):D
It's from young & famous british (!) cook (Jamie Oliver). Everything went exactly as described and the pancakes were great. Very light and tasty!
Here's a recipe for about 10 pancakes (my own translation) :)
Seperate the yellow & white from 6 eggs.
Mix the white from the egs and a teaspoon of salt into a bowl to a large white foamy substance.
Then grab a new bowl, and mix the yellow from the eggs, 8 oz of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1.3 cups of milk, and when it's all mixed up, gently mix (with a spoon/spatel) the white foam from the eggs into it. You'll get a very light substance. Put a little butter in a pan, and bake away :). The average pancake was 3/8" thick! You can add slices of apple, or blackberries, or whatever you like before turning the pancake.

Nice Stove. Nice pancakes too.
I watch "The Naked Chef" over here. That's Jamie Oliver. :) Of course, he's not naked that's just what the show is called :)

Neat stove Ted! I've owned one of their single burner propane fueled ones for about thirty years, used mostly during power failures. Pancake looks very tempting, might have to make some up myself for dinner.
Must say that recipe sounds more like "French" crepes than "American" pancakes. Any that I've used call for 1 whole egg per cup of milk and cup of flour. If buttermilk is available give that a try some time, same for buckwheat flour. Buckwheat cakes are my personal favorite.

I love pancakes Ted. Could I get some bacon and maple syrup with mine. Nice stove. My stoves are small backpacking stoves, a coleman multifuel, a primus technotrail iso/butane mix and a soda can stoves that burns denatured alcohol. I'm thinking of getting one like yours for power failures and such.
Currently I am drooling like Homer Simpson. Hmmmm.... pancake...
That stuff looks really tasty. I might try that recipe too. :D
Stove? Which stove? I can only see my breakfast for tomorrow
Cheers, Rob

Hey Ted, well they look close enough, the most important thing is how did they taste, the jam looks delicious, which is a weakness of mine, I have this thing...for....jam :)
Cheers,
Rob
PS. I know what I'm having for breakfast tomorrow at the Carmel diner :D

This is a very nice stove. Bought mine 4 years ago and I still amazed how good it is. Burns hot and fast. Clean up well. wish it was 1/4 of its weight and foldable :p As for the pancakes, I will try this on my own, 'cause familly members prefer thin pancakes... :(
Congrats...

I need a new stove. Would you recommend the Coleman?
How does it work using petrol? How does it pressurise it?
Ken
Ken, if you need a two pitter, the answer is yes. I couldn't find any alternatives here in Europe that work on fuel.
You pressurize it with an integrated pump. It works different then pumps on MSR stoves. You need to turn it left twice, then pump 25 times with your thumb covering a small hole in the pump, when you're finished, you turn it right twice to close it. On an MSR stoves, you can just pump away :)
I haven't tried it on petrol. It should work on unleaded fuel however.
I prefer to use 'clean' fuels (like coleman) whenever I can. I've always used clean fuel in my 10 year old MSR Dragonfly, and it's still very clean.

.....I have just picked one up on eBay! I hope that it gets here within the next couple of days because I am going to have a camping trip soon. I have always relied on camp fires in the past for my cooking needs but these days fewer land/site owners are happy with open fires. Or is it that as I get older I prefer the easy option? ;)

You'll love the coleman 2 burner.
Run's efficiently on white gas(kerosine). The pumping gets some ppl initially, you'll find it works best to hold your thumb over the hole when you push in, take your thumb off as you pull out. The more pressure, the hotter it burns.
Adjust the flame so you have about an inch of blue flame going for best results(between speed of cooking and use of fuel).
Used a coleman everytime we went camping in scouting and again with cadets. They can't die unless you use poor quality fuel and clog it up(then just strip it and clean the pipes well).

Ted and Patrick
Thanks for the help. :D
It arrived today, I know it took ages, this was because the seller had told his wife to post it whilst he was away on business and she couldnt get the filler plug open to drain the fuel
I will give it a try this weekend.
Thank you, Ken
