View Full Version : My First Spyderco
Hi Guys,
First post here. I just picked up a Native C41PBK last night. Wow, this puppy is sharp. I finally have a real knife. I really went back and forth between this one and a Benchmade 707. Both are great knives, but it seemed to me that the Native was just a better value. It is light, very comfortable and did I mention sharp. It is the sharpest knife I have ever bought and that is factory. I will probably be asking questions about sharpening it a little later. I do have one of these for now (http://www.klawhorn.com/rediedgetactical.htm ). Anyway for now, I will just say hi and I REALLY like the knife!!
Ron
Welcome, ront, hope you enjoy your stay!
With regards to the sharpener: These carbide sharpeners don't have the best reputation. It is said, that by pulling your blade through them, you are "rippling" the edge to the point of micro fractures. Don't worry, they won't cause permanent damage and if it works for you keep using them. However, I would like to direct your attention to Sharpmaker:

Agreed it is an investment, but there is no sharpener on the market that will keep the edge on your Spyderco in better condition and doesn't need a well practiced skill. And yes, as good as the factory edge is, with enough patients you can beat it with the Sharpmaker.

welcome you made a great choice! the native is an excellent knife.
Hi HoB,
Thanks for the welcome.I have noticed the Sharpmaker being talked about here. I have already checked it out. You are correct, it is a bit spendy, but does look very nice. I am not real skilled in sharpening, but it appears that with the Sharpmaker, you just hold the blade vertical to the block and move it down the rods?
Thanks, Ron

Ron,
You are pretty much correct. The angle is already build into the base. The rods can sit at a 30 or 40 degree angle.
I would recommend you pick one up, they are worth every penny and then some.
Welcome to the forums, great first :spyder:
Thanks again for the welcome guys. I do feel like I made a good choice also. As if you have not seen a billion of these but here is a pic of the knife.

Welcome to the forum Ron, enjoy your Earth-made Native.
Thanks for the pic. No matter how many, more are always welcome.
I do like the way it says "USA Earth" on the blade.

ront pictures are always welcome.
What do you all use for a lube on the blade? I also have another question. My other knive of this type is a Gerber Paraframe II. It took just a bit, but I can flip it open pretty easy. It has the stud instead of the hole. I am having a dickens of a time getting this one to open reliably trying to flip it open. Is there any kind of a special method or just practice?
Thanks, Ron

Ront, I use Militec on my blades. That and constant opening and closing of the blade for a while should loosen it up some. My Natives were pretty stiff when I got them. This should help.

I do like the way it says "USA Earth" on the blade.
Ron
maybe in the future it will be "USA Earth 2" or even better "USA Orbital Station"
:D
Can you tell me where you can buy the Militec? I have seen it mentioned here quite a bit.
Thanks, Ron

Or, Ebay... You can find anything there..

Wlcome... The NativeIII was the knife that triggered mine addiction too. I use White Lightning for lubricant at the moment. For blade protection I use Turtle Car Wax because Militec attracts too much dust and debris to the blade.

Welcome, enjoy your knife and I have never heard of anybody regretting the purchase of the Sharpmaker. There comes a time you will wonder if you buy another knife or finaly, that Sharpmaker everyone is talking about, you choose the later and you never go back... God, I never knew I could sharpen scissors and all those weird objects we use everyday... :)
Simon
I still can't believe how sharp this knife is. I am 46 years old and have never had anything close. WOW. I sometimes use the arm on my arm to test for sharpness. My left arm is kinda hairless at the moment :). And if I understand you guys correctly, it can be made even sharper with the Sharpmaker  . I really like this knife!!
