:spyder: I own a dodo as part of my collection. Now I collect spyders as a martial artist so I rarely actualy USE them except for impressing myself by slicing up paper with them and the odd roast beef at the sub-shop. I don't even use my knives to break down boxes as it's easier and faster to do so by hand and doesn't get tape goo on my knifeblades.
I've been wondering how well my dodo would hold up to normal knife use but unless I get attacked by a maniac I don't really HAVE much of a use for a knife in my day to day life. (there, I said it :o )
One of my best friends is day-jobbing as a resident handy-man at a historical preserved old apartment building down town. He's a german-American son of a carpenter who's the son of a butcher so he obviously knows the correct and proper use of a knife! :)
I tossed him my dodo yesterday and told him to just carry it and use it for a month, whatever. I'll keep it sharp and at the end of the month I'll get it back (pry it away, I'll bet :p ) from him, get his impressions and write them up as a worker's review. He's not emotionaly invested in spydercos like we are so his impressions will be blunt and unvarnished. :spyder:
Train hard and stay safe! Mike

I can't wait to get his impressions of the knife. I often give my Dad knives for the same reason. He is retired and gets a chance to hunt and fish a lot! I give him knives as gifts and he really puts them through their paces. BTW he always give Spydercos a good review. :D

Hey there Mike; I only use my Dodo for opening cardboard boxes / letters / blister packaging/cigar cutting :) and I even accidentally dropped it on my hardwood floor (and the knife stuck perfectly in the floor with no damage to the tip! I shouldv'e taken a photo at the time but I was too excited that my toes were still intact :) ) but I'd say the s30v steel of the Dodo should have "no problems" as long as your friend doesn't "abuse" it...what's interesting was thombrogan's post...http://spyderco.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16439
where he used his Yojimbo to cut down maple saplings with no real damage to his blade! Probably a few strokes on the fine sticks of the sharpmaker should restore its factory edge!

Mike, you really should get something like a dragonfly and use it for mundane stuff. You won't really appreciate spydies untill you use them...for cutting inanimate stuff. And this comes from a fellow martial artist.

Ah ok, a swift scan of your post made me think you didn't enjoy a Spydie for everyday stuff. Good on ya, I too carried a Calypso jr. sans clip for a while. That mode of carry was suprisingly comfy for a knife in that size.

This is going to be interesting. Can't wait for your post when he gives the knife back. I think I'll question the woman I gave my Delica to last week just for yucks in a months time. Good idea, wish I thought of it!

Aloha Michael,

Whoa...initially, I thought someone loaned YOU a Dodo for a month. First thing I figured was that they were NOT going to get it back! :)

I kinda miss carrying that one...but until Dialex's Creation comes out, it'll be my Persian and ProtoHawk for "test" purposes. BTW, imagine the Persian's SS to be "black chromed", and the Micarta replaced by G10? *DroooooL*

God bless, and a cool gesture on your part my friend :)

That would be perfection. :) It's such a wonderful blade! Micarta's slickness is the Persian's only limited drawback, to me. That and it needs jimping, and the hole could me a milimetre larger. OK! Enough kibitzing on my part! :o
