Hey, spyderco fanatics. First off,I would like to say I love the knives. I currently own a SS police, a Carbon Fiber Civilian, a spydercard, and the Gunting.

I'm looking now for a knife that I could use for fishing. I ofen go offshore and fight large sharks and tuna. So I need a knife to cut the line just in case the doodoo hits the fan.

I think I might want the SS Harpy, SS Delica, or the Pro-Grip. What would you suggest? I'm open to any idea, but would perfer a hefty knife that is medium sized with a clip to clip on my belt. Any price is OK with me.

Also, what kind of knife sharpener would be best for any knife, plainedge or serrated? Thanks for the time!

I forgot to say that I am also considering the Native SS version. Sorry about that. Thanks in advance for the help

Why don't you consider the Spyderco Catcherman, it was made for fishing. I think that the Harpy would be your next best bet considering you might need to cut a line or netting really fast. Plus it was made for that kind of environment.

What kind of sharpener? Well what else that a Spyderco Sharpmaker 204. I not just saying that because I love Spidies. It is truly a great system, and is extremely versatile. You can even do your fish hooks!

Ehh, supposed to be Thorin... : )

Fishing can often become a slick, slimy business. I love my Native in FRN, with the 440V steel. I know you could hang onto it much better than you could a SS handle, especially if things had gotten a bit slimy. Mine is an older model, with a decent grip pattern. I believe the newer FRN has the same pattern as the Calypso Jr Ltwt. If so, that is the single grippiest handle I've yet come across.

Whatever knife you get, I'd surely recommend using a lanyard, so you don't have to worry about watching it slowly slide into the depths.

Happy fishing!

Stainless harpy.i picked one up a few days ago.Perfect for the reachout and cut method.Pulling back toward you to cut is its design,G-10 is an option, but stainless is so much nicer, and surprisingly not a lot of weight clipped in the pocket. And the 204 sharpmaker is a must for the sharpener.

Hi Everybody,

It hasn't been widely publicized but Spyderco recently changed the blade steel on the Catcherman to MBS-26. This is the same blade steel currently used on our ProCulinaire kitchen knives (good, flexible stuff).

Here's the doodoo on the Catcherman for anyone that's interested....

~MBS-26 Blade steel
~7/16" (11mm) hole diamater
~75/25 edge config. (75% planedge 25% serrated)
~2.8 oz. (80g) weight
~4 /34" (121mm) blade length
~Plastic pocket clip
~5 12/16" (151mm) Length closed
~10 7/16" (265mm) Overall length open
~MSRP $60.00 plus

I think you need the stainless Harpy, as it is custom designed for cutting rope effectively, is hefty and should drop open like lightning given it's significant handle weight. If you use a lanyard, you don't have to worry about losing it.

The Sharpmaker 204 is a wonderful system.
