I just purchased a delica lightweight plain edge and was hoping for some suggestions on caring for and sharpening of it. I think the term "sheeple" that you have developed is hilarious and true. I'm 17 and did over 5 years of karate and had to put up with plenty of them, you should have seen the looks I got about my kamas and chinese broad sword. Thanks
I also have been reading through the forum and am very impressed by the people who post here and that sal is so interested and involved with those who carry spyderco.

hi maurauder, welcome to the forum. the spyderco truangle sharpener works great, one of my friends has one. i prefer the lansky system. i collect tactical folders, and it does a great job on all of them. also, welcome to the wonderful world of spyderco. they are great knives, and you will meet some great people on the forum. i have learned a lot, and met poeple from all over the world. they are the best, and you will really enjoy talking to them. you'll probably even hear from sal, he answers us all the time. i'm still wondering when he sleeps.

Hi Marauder2002, welcome to the forum. My first knife purchase was a Delica and a Standard (I couldn't decide between the two and bought both) and I have been collecting knives ever since. Let this be a warning to you--it gets addictive.
I like the Sharpmaker from Spyderco for its ease of use and effectiveness but also have 3 DMT sharpeners (blue, red, & green) for emergency sharpening on plain edged knives out in the field.
You'll find that most Spyderco knives are relatively "carefree." I haven't lubricated the pivots on my Delica since it's purchase over two years ago and it still opens and closes smoothly. I lubricate the pivot only when absolutely necessary (e.g., squeaky noises or very rough cycling). I use RemOil on the pivot. I also find that if I use a knife often its stainless steel blade resists corrosion quite well. It's usually the knives that sit at home in collector cases that need occasional maintenance to keep them rust free. Depending on the knife I use Sentry Solutions Tuff Cloth (e.g., bead blasted or coated blades) or Flitz (all others).
Have fun with your new hobby (I know the Delica won't be your last purchase). I'll look forward to seeing your posts here in the future as you acquire additional Spyderco knives and/or contribute to the discussions.

My first Spydie was also a Delica, as is the case with most ppl here.
I didn't even sharpen it until last winter, even though it's nearly 2yrs old. I recently purchased the Spydie sharpener "Double Stuff", as I'm used to freehand sharpening. I've owned knives for 12 yrs, and this is the best of the best.
I find the occassional touchup, about every month, is good with the Delica. It keeps this baby Shaving Sharp.
Have fun with your purchase, it will be the first of many. In 2 yrs of spydies...
Delica, August '99
Ladybug, Feb '01, work knife
Cricket, March '01, b'day purchase
Ladybug, June '01, loose change knife
Dragonfly, this summer
Chinook, winter '01(hopefully)
We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...

Welcome Marauder2002. It is always nice to have a new "face" begin participating on the forum.
I think you've made a wise choice for your 1st knife, and could not have picked a better company. Your perspective of Sal and Spyderco is right on.
I think it is good you started with a knife that wasn't at the top end of the size spectrum. There is always time for that. Learning how to properly use knives, sharpen and care for them is probably best done w/a medium sized knife.
When your itch to buy comes around again, I'd sure recommend you consider the Native and the Calypso Jr. Ltwt. I think both are terrific knives. I haven't checked out the Dragonfly, or the Navigator, or some of the other smaller knives yet, but am sure I will someday soon.
Again, nice to see you.

Welcome to the forum Marauder2002!!
Excellent choice for a first Spyderco. Since you bought a plain edge I'd also recommend the Spyderco Double Stuff sharpener. Great little set of stones. Next on your list should be the 204 Sharpener. Only way to go. <img src="smile.gif" width=15 height=15 align=middle>
