Good day, all.

I have encountered a few requests to see the hawkbills in my modest collection. So... :D

I have included reverse-S blades for the sake of completeness.

Thanks for taking the time to do that for us Doc. I really like that Merlin PE, and Spyderhawk. Interesting pieces. Do they still make that Microtech?

My Dear Ghostrider,

As I recall, the Microtech Hawkbill Auto is a limited reissue of an older Microtech model. I have seen it still available for sale on some websites, however, and there is a gentleman on bladeforums (RRG) with a few to trade; that is where I obtained mine.

To be fair, my SS Cricket PE was conspicuously absent from the photo, as my Lady is carrying it today. As usual. :p

Very nice blade. I am much impressed.

I also possess this one and forgot to photograph it. It is a very recent acquisition.

Hi Doc. You're serious about your hawks I see. Nice collection. You guys, yourself, JD, et el have gotten my mind working OT. I think I'll step up with one of those Byrd hawks to test the waters.

BTW, whats the knife in your 2nd photo? I could go for that big time!

Take care.

Dear Dr Lecter, i couldn't notice the fact that you seem to have a SE SS Harpy! Probably the author (Mr Harris) of your book made a mistake, i would advice you to write him a note so he can add an erratum!

Dr. Lecter, I'm highly jealous. My own hawkbill collection is quite meager compared to yours. Apart from my Spyderhawk, mine are nothing worth talking about. Thank you for giving me something to aspire to :D

Thomaz, the first from the left is, correct me if I'm wrong Dr. Lecter, a MOD Ladyhawk? Would love one, but its severely out of my price range. :o

Your right. It is a MOD Lady Hawk. A stout, little knife. :D

The good Doctor has truly laid out his cards. He has got either a "full house" or a "straight flush". Very nice layout indeed :spyder:  . It seems as though the Hawkbill thing has truly gotten contagious. The thread: "Now's The Time: For a New Hawkbill" is also giving birth to other threads such as this covering all aspects of these great tools/blades.

The Good Doctor blessed me with a Custom fixed Blade Hawkbill. It is a D-2 Greco and it is a "ROCK" of a knife. Well at least that's how solid it feels. Does anyone here have any experience with John Greco's Hawkbill blades?

Right now my 2 favorite Hawkbills are the G-10 Harpy and the Blue Handled PE Spyderhawk. A couple of aces in my book. See you all on the "New HAwkBILL thread  :spyder:

Good day all,

I just realized that there are several other very inexpensive hawkbills available for all you hawkbill-minded people. If you're partial to inexpensive French blades, that is... :D

By the way, the images come from www.opinel.com and are listed under 'les outils de jardin'. That's 'garden tools' for you and I.

Hope that this possibility to add to your collection without breaking the bank is appreciated.

I would recommend stripping the handles and giving them a nice stain and gunstock-oil finish. The stuff that's used by the factory is just rubbish. Blades are good though.

With best regards,

Ruud

My Dear Daywalker,

That Hawk on the far right, top row...looks like zackerty's design!

It is a Microtech Automatic, a very robust design to say the least. They are illegal for carry here so it spends most of its time in the safe.

Most of it... :D

My Dear Friend Ruud,

I appreciate the reminder very much! I have considered those blades before and almost ordered them once. I need to break down and do that soon.

You are not the first here to rave about Opinel cutlery - it has been suggested to me once or twice before, so it is definitely worth a look.

My thanks to you, my friend. :)

My Dear Friend Clovisc,

where's the karambit?!!!!!!

The Karambit went the wayside along with my Emerson version. They were both great blades, but the finger ring really got on my nerves - they enticed me to do stupid things with them that could get me hurt. :D

They are in better hands now.

As for the Crossbill, someday soon, I hope...

My Dear Grinch,

Dear Dr Lecter, i couldn't notice the fact that you seem to have a SE SS Harpy! Probably the author (Mr Harris) of your book made a mistake, i would advice you to write him a note so he can add an erratum!

As I recall, there was no reference in any of Thomas Harris' novels concerning the edge design of Dr. Lecter's Spyderco Harpy. They chose a PE for the filming of Hannibal, but I am inclined to think that the SE would be just as, of not more, effective for the kinds of defensive cutting the good Doctor would do.

Hello Doc,

Just looked up the prices for the Opinels at a German knifestore I regularly shop at (www.toolshop.de). The Opinel hawkbills are listed at 14! and 19! Euro's respectively. That comes about to 17 and 23 USD. I'd expect them to cost even more in the States?
Personally, I would leave them be for that amount of money. In my personal opinion they would not be worth it. I expected them to be in the same range as most other Opinel knives, meaning 15 USD max. Compared to an all stainless Bird at USD 20 you would probably be disappointed...

Sorry.

Ruud.

No apologies necessary, my friend. Actually, the price has been the primary factor in why I do not yet possess them. They did seem a bit steep for what they were, compared to other models.

Still, one day I will probably get them just for the fun of it!

Dear Doc, thanks for the pic. Nice collection you have there. All it misses is a big, MBC rated hawkbill - with comp lock and ONE indexing divot ;)
The Kestrel is a fine piece too, not to mention Graciella's Ladyhawk. I'd get one myself - if it would come in S30V and G-10 handles, unlinered. ;)

Beautiful collective, Doctor L.
You definitely need a Crossbill. Of all the hawks I own (2 harpies, PE Merlin, SE Merlin, SE Spyderhawk, Crossbill, Reverse-S Matriarch), I carry the Crossbill the most. Probably because it's bigger than the Harpy, and fills the hand quite nicely. I also love that you can change the clip from tip up/down and vice versa. I'm thinking about getting another, and having some G10 or Micarta scale overlays added to it to give it better purchase, along with some judicious yet strategically placed checkering/stippling along the edge of the frame.

agony, take a look at my Crossbill thread. I had that stippling done just like you are describing. It will give you an idea of how it can look.
