I am curious about the proper way to open and close my delica one handed. It is tip up carry. So far for opening I just use the tip of my thumb and push forward. How do people cut themselves? I haven't had any problems. I was also wondering if anyone had any suggestions for my next purchase. I was also wondering what your opinions were for getting a knife for a girl. I was thinking a shepsfoot ladybug maybe. Thanks

i genrally open my tip up knives, tim wegner, bob lum chinese folder (set that way)and a copiolet (when not on my key chain) by griping the handle firmly with my thumb and having my fingers on the out side of the pocket i pull out the knife and open the blade with my thumb as i do this i roll my fingers around and have a good solid grip. buy the time the blade is out and locked. i have never cut my self with any tip up knife in or around my pocket or while puling it out. some people say that tip up knives can open in the pocket but that hasn't happen to me yet. however, i have cut the very slight top layer of skin, no blood, off my thumb once when i opend my harpy (tip down) with my thumb nail vs. the center of the thumb, on accedent and my thumb slipped in front barely nicked the very sharp blade. closing the lock back i would us my thumb on the lever and then after the blade is released i use my index finger in the hole and guide it little closed them my thumb lets go of the release lever and pushes the blade it all the way into the handle.
2. you could release the lock with the thumb and use your index finger to push down on the back of the blade all the way into the hanlde while you rotate your fingers out of the way
3. OR a flasher way: you could release the lever with thumb and then grab the hole with thumb and index finger and flip the handle back on to the blade but that might take more practice and if you have the FRN handle it might not have enoph weight. you could even get a trainer knife to pactice with. other "forumites" will have plenty of other good suggestions for alernate techiques. find the one that is most comforatble for you.

for your next purchace what type of knife do you need or want? more dressy, for hunting or camping, big utility, uniquite design a or for pure collecting. price range is a factor.

i think the shepsfoot ladybug is fine but a pointy tip is very handy and the drop point lady bug you can pick a color that she would appreciate. however the copiolet is engravable and i think it looks great. although it costs quite abit more it might be worth it. i think the criket has a very "cute" look both and i think the tipp would be great for fine detail work both of these you could clip or put on a key chain or hace them loose in a pocket or purse. if you share in outdoor activites get a delica to match yours, if you think she migh tlike a color other than black, at one time www.bladeart.com had them in colors, i belive they carried them in blue and pink, i don't know if they still do.
good luck with your knife hunting.

I have 2 ways to open my delica, depending on carry location.

1> small of back, right of spine(approx 2-3" over)(clip setup for LH carry)
-reach back,thumb pointing out
-use index finger to palm delica, getting a good grip on it
-grip clip with fingers, open with thumb pad

2> Front, Right pocket
-reach down, find hole with thumb pad
-use hole to bring it out of pocket(takes practice)
-as it clears the pocket, palm the whole thing
-grip clip with fingers, use thumb pad to open.

I only cut myself once with this, on my first one handed close. But now...
-use thumb to close lever, allow kick to contact index figer
-rotate knife around, to opening position(spine against hand)
-use thumb to close

re: a knife for girls
hmmmm... age is a factor here, as you don't want 7-8yr olds running around with razor edged knives(at least any that I know). If age is not, then look at:
a> clip-point ladybug, assorted colors, small size(I still use mine daily)
b> cricket, pink or black are the only ones out there, but both are classy.
c> c35 "Q" It looks cool, yet still holds up well. Only have to find one. I know where you can.

Good luck.

We all start with 10 fingers. Those with Spydies have 9 to spare, Still need a thumb. Good thing I still have 8 to spare...
