Question,

If you're interested in a particular style of knife that you've never handled would you buy the training version of that knife first to experament or would you just go ahead and buy the knife? Keep in mind the blade I'm considering is a $350 knife and honestly that's more than I pay in rent.

So the idea is should I get the trainer first to see if the design will work for me?

Chambers, I would at least want to handle a knife that expensive before i bought it. I'd want to make sure it felt comfortable in my hand. And if there is a training version,(and it's a whole lot less than $350), i'd get it first. That's a pretty serious investment in a knife.

Just to specify,
I only ask because I think many of you bought the gunting without or before buying the trainer. I think the only difference is the price

As far as i know the trainer is the same price as the live blade version. I would like to know how to get ahold of the version for corrections officers.

ronin203,

If you are referring to the Blue handled CRIMPT it has not been produced yet. Us Gunting fans are just having to be patient.

I got the training Gunting before I got the live version. I already knew that I was ging to get the live one though. The only reason I got the trainer first was to practice before I got the live one.

Ok, so what's the difference between the Crimpet(?) and the regular gunting?
Thanks by the way I think I will get the trainer first.

Chambers,
If the Trainer doesn't fit your needs; it's easier to sell. No ones expects a trainer to br "mint" or if the blades' been sharpen. Even Scratchs are somewhat expected.

If you are seriously buying a knife and its a knife you intend to "use" as an MBC- or Defensive tool I'd get a trainer with it..
Getting a trainer to see if you like a knife is redundant..A trainer is not the knife..noer will it give you the feel of the knife..
thats not the purpose of a trainer...
A trainer DRONE is so one can safely practice with ones self or with a partner.. to understand the usage of that particular tool and learn how to not use or use that tool..
to encourage muscle memory..

IF you are getting the knife..and its use needs for you to practice with it...ie. MBC- or Self defense then you need a trainer either before or with the knife..

If you are not sure of a knife, then you need to go fondle the knife..see the knife...hold the knife and make that decision LONG before you buy a DRONE, the knife or the set of them..

In the GUNTING case for example..IF the GUNTING is for you..it says YES..then buy a DRONE first or @ the same time..one cannot learn the GUNTING without the DRONE..Its not an MBC- or selfdefense situation...its an EDC knife..a utlitarian knife? I guess you might skip the DRONE.. but remember don't practice the Kin-Op openings without the DRONE..

The GUNTING is one of the few knives with an identical functional trainer DRONE..
The DRONE is also an Non lethal to Less than Lethal impact tool....
it takes some playing with it to understand..

Have a great 4th of July!!

MaNcEr,
The knife I'm looking at is Laci Szabo's UUK you can find it and his other blade designs on his web page at SZABOINC.com. I have been drooling over that knife for three years. By the way. does MaNcEr stand for something? It looks like it could be an acronym. Just wondering.
sal,
sorry about mentioning a non spyderco blade in these hallowed halls.
