View Full Version : Ever wondered how a folder made by leatherman might look?
Hi folks!
Title says it all. I just found out about these folders (http://www.equipped.com/lm_knives.htm) so at least we do not have to speculate about the looks :D
What do you think about them? IMO they make no sense at all. I'd buy a multitool AND a knife rather than that! For me they look like they could be outperformed by most SAK's and any former LM model.
Other opinions?

I saw these mentioned somewhere recently, and I did not particularly care for them. I carry a Leatherman everyday, a Charge XTi, and it hasn't failed me yet. I guess maybe I'm stubborn and don't like change, but I just don't like the appearance of them, they just do not look user friendly.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Of course, if the market is there....
Leatherman makes great products, and I'm sure those folders will be built as well as their multitools, but I just can't bring myself to like them.
Just my opinion.

I think we're in the same boat :) I still carry the PST II that I bought with my first salary 9 years ago. Not as pretty as it was back then but it holds up and even takes abuse.
I know, LM is also a company which produces quality but just from the looks of these folders, I tend to disagree. I don't think that they would hold up as well as my old PST II. But I might be wrong on that...

Leatherman's tools are SOLID. I've used the butts of them as hammers when nothing else was available to no ill effect(I'm so abusive :D )
But like you said, those new folders don't look like they would hold up as well as one of the multitools. I especially don't like the screw bits being kept in cutouts in the handle, that can't be comfortable, and I have doubts as to how well they'll stay put.

With my crappy hands, any folding knife without a hole for an opener is not very interesting. Not to mention that I'm left handed and even the lockback ones have a RH only thumb stud. Do like the wichard style snap at the rear. Funny thing was going to suggest (or even may have done so) that Spyderco do a "cross breed" between the SnapIt and the Remote Release in H-1.

It might depend on how much they weigh as to whether I pick one up. Some non spydie days I carry a LM Charge XTi with the pocket clip, it can be quite a pocket-full, and with shorts kinda' heavy. I may see a niche for one of these LM folders as the extra knife in the extra pocket of the backpack just in case...as an EDC to replace a Spydie...probably not.
Interesting concept tho'

Personally I think that when compared to the Victorinox SwissTool or the new Victorinox Spirit the Leatherman is low grade.
I looked at a Leatherman Wave and the Charge at Walmart and I thought that the quality was very low. The fit and finish was mediocre at best. Because of this I will only buy Victorinox Multitools. Comparing a Leatherman to a Victorinox tool is like comparing a Chevy Lumina to an Audi A8
The knives look too bulky and overbuilt for me. Also the fact that they have an opening stud on one side only is lame.
:D
