View Full Version : Another rust question.

There are two things about my knife that I hate the most; first is blade play and the second is rust. I wipe my EDC blade almost every day with a cloth moistured with Ballistol even if I didn't use the knife at all. Now I read that Deacon just hits the drops of his knife(or wipes the dirt off) and puts the knife back. I wouldn't dare to do that because of my fear of rust. Now my question is: How afraid do I have to be of corrosion? Am I just too compulsive with it?
I mainly use VG10 or S30V blades.
Many thanks in advance...

well all i can say is that sometimes there develops some sort of "spotting" on my users. This is very mild and develops only after days if not weeks. I use plain alcohol to rub it of ( and stubborn spots with Brasso ). Then i use gun oil on them, they seem to stay in perfect condition if you don't use them.
Just think about all those :spyder: knives that are stockpiled is kniveshops. Nobody is going to take all those knives out of their boxes and wipe them with balistol every week!
i bought a blue frn delica from ebay, and the white box stated 2001 .
The knife ATS 55 didn't show any rust at all. Looks like the box was forgotten in the warehouse and they dropped it on Ebay due to the date. The knife survived 4 years in the warehouse without any care apparently and was in perfect condition.
So keeping your blade in the box for years without touching them seems to have no effect on the blade whatsoever.
it is wise to check your collector knives from time to time, but unless they show spots i wouldn't clean them every time. You decrease the value more by opening, oiling and handling them then when you set them apart after a good wipe for years.

I just got back from the Wetlands from here in Northern Missouri here this last weekend. My main EDC at the present time is my C-44 P&S Big Dyad. It is made of ATS-55 blade steel. Until this last weekend I had never had any noteable problems with it at all. But on Sunday when we went to lunch I got my Dyad out to rinse it off and notice a couple of spots like the good brother mentioned. They were not rust spots either. They were very dark brown in color.
Now the non-abrasive Flitz polish I normally use to maintain my "using" Spyders worked like a charm. But corrosion is a subject that I would really like to see an extensive thread done on someday. I think that rust is only part of the problem. The Great Spyder Factory uses many different stainless alloys and you know that they all have their own different and unique properties.
Now for preventative measures I use the "Tuf-Cloth" from Sentry Solutions and have had really great luck with all of their products. I am open ears to anyone with any viable feedback about this ever haunting corrosion issue. I know the DEACON knows a great deal about this subject. OK Paul I'm waiting :D

JD, what are your thoughts RE: TufCloth vs Flitz Gun Wax for preventive maintenance against rust? Are they pretty equal in efficacy?

Well, I firmly believe my body chemistry has changed over the years. When I was younger, it seemed like I could rust a firearm just by looking at it. If I touched a gun, and did not wipe it down immediately, my fingerprints would start to blossom in rust within five minutes. Now, for whatever reason, that no longer happens. Can wait a couple hours to wipe on down with no ill effect. Been using G96 Silicone cloths on them since before Phillips Petroleum won a trademark infringment case against them, and they had to change their name from G66. Knives were never as much of a problem and none at all with any of my Spydercos. Think the air may have something to do with it too, as when I was younger I lived about a mile from the ocean and now am over 100 miles inland.

I have been using a product called CorrosionX...I can't say enough about it...as far as rust prevention it is fabulous....I clean the bores and all the moving and non-moving parts of my guns with it as well as all my knives...I use it as lubricant as well...It is great on all other things as well...I can't tell you how much money this product has saved me over the years...Got a fishing reel that's all rusted and ready for the garbage or a tool left out in the rain for weeks or months that is rusted shut and inoperable...or a pad lock that is rusted closed....just a few drops of corrosionX, a five to ten minute wait and presto!!! all rusted tools working better than new, rusted locks pop right open and no more throwing out old fishing reels....It's a great product...and I don't own or work for the company I just really love when a company's product really does what it advertizes it will do...My hats off to this anti-rust- lubercant product called CorresionX, use it for Knives, Guns and other things, you should be able to pick it up at any good gun shop....Doc :D

Perhaps the seniors' discount isn't the only plus accociated with getting old. :D . I just use a soft dry cloth not moistened with anything (unless, of course, the knife get wet, and then it's dried using compressed air and lubed with Break Free).

This is a good way to store your treasure in a safe for years. I don't know how they react on the boxes but they will keep your collector knives free from corrosion for a VERY long time.

Thanks you all. I wonder how the people who live near a sea ( Daywalker and all) keep their knives from rusting. Or those who sweat a lot(like me)
Two days ago I did a little test with my Delica VG10. First I cleaned the blade. Then I put some normal household oil on it. Then I put the closed knife under my armpit(don't laugh!), where I was very sweaty at the moment, for a while. Then, without cleaning the blade, I put the knife away. The next day I noticed some little red/brown spots on the blade which I could wipe away rather easily. I didn't wipe the sweat form the blade because when I sweat through my pocket during the day while working, the knife dries up in my pocket. I don't wipe the blade 10 times a day.
A while back I put the same Delica in my dishwasher. After that I just put away the knife without any blade protection. After a week there still wasn't any signs of rust.
Point is; I think you have to be very careful with VG10 and sweat.

Say Spydutch, would it not be an idea to carry your knife in a pouch on your belt? It might save you a lot of hassle. Maybe someone can make you some goodlooking custom pouches.

Thanks for the suggestion Piet. However, I don't like to carry a belt poach. Being overweight at the moment, I don't wear any belts at all. I find them rather awkward at the moment (I only carry loose jogging pants at the moment) That's why I like those Clipits that much.
But thanks anyway....

Aloha Spydutch!
Forgive my tardiness on this one! How do I, who lives on a volcano with the presence of sulphur and sea salt in the air always keep his blades from not rusting? I carry my Pacific Salt! :p Kidding!
I have been carrying my C83 (VG10) daily since it's return, playing also with my REKAT Escalator drone made of ATS34, or my Gunting Live.
Wanna know something? I just give them an occasional wipe with a Silicone Gun cloth and they are good to go. *Sometimes* they'll spot rust as your Delica did...nothing major though. My long term GawkBox knives I wipe with Marine Grade Tuf-Cloth after a cleaning with Mother's Polish. I also place them oxygen absorbing packets in my GawkBox, as well as with my cased firearms.
When I used to go night diving, my carry knives were usually AUS6, AUS8, and ATS55. They ALL would spot rust DURING the dive! I could simply wipe it off though...thank God!
Anything beadblasted or blued takes a heck of a beating here!!! Funny though, my Ladybug of AUS6 gets neglected the most, and has only minor rust spots here and there...
God bless ;)

The ONLY rust problem I've ever had was a TINY amount inside the SpyderHole. Since I have a plumbing background, I went to my toolbox and got out the 1/2" copper fitting brush (used for cleaning inside 1/2" copper fittings) and cleaned the inside of the SpyderHole with it. I do that now on some of my factory Spydies....the inside of the hole just shines like mad afterwards :)
Rust....what rust? :D

I really don't care about rust spots as long as the knife is sharp and cuts.
For firearms in storage I use Break-Free CLP which is what the military uses for it's small weapons. It also works okay on knives.
Maybe some unfortunate Spydie lover from New Orleans can give us an update on what his knives look like once they drain all the water from the city. That would be a meaningful perspective, IMHO.
