View Full Version : dyad's in general?
is it just certain people who are coocoo for cocoa puffs over dyads in general or are there certain models that are more desirable than others? how long were they made and were there many made?
i just ordered a low 100's #'d small micarta just because i don't have one but haven't got it yet.
but seriously what is the appeal? (not to be disrespectful)
is it worth snagging a black frn one?

for me i love small multi blade folders, but dont typically cary them for the lack of one handed opening. So the dyad solves my problem. It offers me the choice of PE/SE and is compact, lighweight, and quite a looker. I dont have any history on theese knives, and sadly dont own one yet. One of theese days, ill get me an FRN Dyad Jr, strangely enough, i covet it more then any other dyad i know of. I want one i can lightly use, and IMO FRN makes for a great user as a handle material. Sadly untill that day comes i have to stick to my Schrade Avatar "dyad clone" and my Buck Cadet and Buck Trio. I have looked at several Queen multi blades and have decided that untill the FRN Jr is obtained that they may just become my new multi blade pocket buddies.

JD is gonna be all over this whenever he gets here. ;)
Personally, I think the Dyad is a great design, and I had the oppurtunity to handle one once. Great knife, but not good for a lefty, the blades are backwards for me.
For collectible purposes, snag it. They command pretty decent prices.
My Dyad Jr Micarta epitomizes Spyderco - sharp, tough and utilitarian. It's one of my best pocket knives (clip removed). But, I wouldn't get a plastic one and the full size version wasn't comfortable for me.

The title says it all for me. The C-44P&S Dyad will be a very coveted and very hard knife to obtain in a year or 2. Just yesterday on a job we encountered some vines. Very, Very tough stringy vines needless to say. One of the guys said "Go get a chain saw!!" . I said "Chainsaw for those little things"!!!! I got out my C-44 big Dyad and severed those vines with my fully serrated blade from my Dyad and made "Child's Play" out of that annoying job as the 2 other guys looked on with amazement.
The little Micarta Dyad C-39 is a little treasure just waiting to come into it's own. I would make a modest bet that within a year or so not only will the big Dyad bring about bid wars on Ebay but to get the little Micarta C-39 Dyad there will be a lot of cash put out for them ;) The little FRN colored Dyads now are a treasure waiting to be.
thanks guys. i actually got that black frn dyad snatched out from under me this afternoon. guess i should have been buying instead of chatting.
son of a @#%$!!!!!!!!!  :p
at least i still have my #'d micarta jr. coming yet.(things could be worse, i guess) :)

Spyderco has produced quite a number of knives which attract a cadre of devotees. Each model also has those who, at least occasionally, shake their heads, wondering why anybody in their right mind would spend good money on "one of those". Chalk it all up to different strokes for different folks. As for me - as a lefty, I find them "backwards" and difficult to use. As a collector, I own them because they are collectable and will only become even moreso as time goes on.

I think it is cool to have a small knife with both SE and PE locking blades. It just seems practical to me. I've never had one though. They are too collectable for me to run out and grab one just to abuse it. IIRC Sal was thinking about bringing back the Dyad (not sure which size).

Just spotted a small C-39 micarta dyad new in a box. Can anyone give me an approximate fair market value? Hope this is ok to ask on the forum, thanks, Spydercojoe

Those Dyads are cool, I've admired them for a while but have yet to grap one. Wasn't there talk of a limited run rerelease a while back?
i hope it's not going to be in regular production.
i would like to keep it in high demand -- with a limited production of course! :D
i'll take two, thank you very much!

JD would know if I'm on the right track here, I think it was mentioned a few months back in a thread where Joyce or maybe Kristi posted a pic of Sals jigged bone Dyad. Anyone remember?

Hope this is ok to ask on the forum, thanks, SpydercojoeJoe, all I can say is I paid about $70 for mine late last year. Prices on most older Spydercos seem to have gone nuts in the past six months, so that may be a bargain by current standards.

thanks Deacon for the info. you have a super web-site by the way.
I recently traded for the large micarta dyad, new in box for about 80 bucks and thought that was pretty good, I saw later where one sold for much higher then that on e-bay. I have the british racing green small dyad and this micarta small dyad looked like a nice addition. So thanks for your help.

I remember there was a thread on the other forum which had those pictures. Run a seach for Dyad, and it will likely be the longest thread that comes up. It was one of JD Spydo's threads that won't die if my memory is accurate. ;)
If I can find it, I'll provide a link.

And I was mistaken, it wasn't that long, but I could have sworn it was seven pages long at one point, not four. Oh well, the picture is there.

I personally believe that all of the Dyads including the FRN models will be very highly sought after within a year or 18 months let's say. But I think the one that will ultimately grab the big bucks will be the The C-39 Micarta Dyad JR. They just didn't make that many of them. There have been an inordinate amount of the Micarta Dyad Juniors around for the past 4 months and I managed to snag 2 of them. But mark my words the C-39 Micarta version will be up there with the Jess Horns in the foreseeable future.
The Big C-44 I believe will be in the Top 10 of all of Spyderco's classics for many years to come. I do hope that they re-release the knife into production but I do hope that they change it greatly so as to protect my investment in all the Dyads I have hoarded here in the last year or so. I carry a C-44 Big Dyad and it is an awesome EDC and I don't know what I would switch to if I lost it. Thumbs up for the Dyads all the way ;) :spyder:

In spite of the fact that the C-39 Micarta Dyad is getting more rare each passing day you can still get them for under $100 if you play your cards right. However I have seen a couple of them break the $100 mark this last summer. I personally think that the C-39 Micarta Dyad will end up being the biggest prize of the whole Dyad fleet before it is all said and done.
There is one more Dyad that is as rare as an honest bureaucrat. That is the colored FRN C-39 Dyads. I found 2 of them about a year ago. I think that Spyderknut found one or 2 of them recently but that is about it as far as anyone I know having found any of them recently. Those babies will demand some cash in the Not So Distant future. And that's the way it is ;) :spyder:

Far as I know, other than black, those are the only two colors (or at least the only two that were "officially" produced). Am guessing the teal is what Joe referred to as BRG, but were there any other colors?

Deacon if you look on BLADEFORUMS on the Dyad Variations thread that I started there some time back ( and it's still going by the way) there was a response that the General ( Sal Glesser) gave me which indicated that there were 2 more colors of FRN Dyads. I think there was an orange one and a red one if my memory serves me well. I am going to go back and see if I can find it. I wish the GENERAL would chime in on this one :) O BTW I have the Burgundy & Green ( Teal) models that you have. I got them on Ebay about a year ago. I paid $52 each for them. I will never get my money back
